Am a young man living in Cameroon (AFRICA) I wish to introduce Linux to my community unfortunately i don't really know how to do that because many people here who have idea about computing are mostly doing it with Pirated Copy of W...now that holidays are coming i think it will be great to organize little computer classes with the general public mostly youths.
Please this really a call for help if any one can guide me i will really appreciate.

Hard to know where to begin without knowing details. Do you have a set of
computers? If so I would suggest installing a common version of Linux on
them - Ubuntu is a good choice. You will need to download a disk image and
copy it to a flash drive or burn it to a DVD. Worst case scenario is you
need to buy one CD or DVD... but if that is the case it is only one and you
can copy it and use it as often as you want on as many computers as you
want.

Then show users how to surf the web, work with images, music... whatever. Do
you have an idea of how people are using computers and what their needs are?

Big idea for such a short time.

I'd plan it for later and prepare better first.

Some ideas:

1. Create a list of equivalents. List what people mostly use, and the
alternatives for each. You can't cover all possibilities, but you can
sure cover most cases. Most people do a limited amount of things.
That's easy to cover.

2. Burn some live CDs/DVDs. It's better for people to have something to
work with while you show them around. Be sure to let people know the
live versions won't do anything to harm whatever they already have
installed.

3. Invite people to bring their own machines. Preferably laptops when
possible to overcome a space shortage and a huge need for power.

4. Have a presentation. If at all possible, use a projector on a laptop
to show what it is you're doing while those who are equipped can go
along with you. In this presentation you can go into more capabilities.
Just don't overdo it. You can mention things without going into too
much detail. Just enough for people to know a lot of what they can do
for free.

5. Be sure to mention security. Don't get into the gory details about
permissions and such, but mention that the permissions system is what
sets linux apart from the major vendors where security is concerned.
Don't give them false promises, though. Linux can still be insecure if
people use it insecurely. But you can inform them that linux requires
the user to take actions to be insecure from the moment it is run,
whereas Windows is insecure out of the box. And that linux requires the
user to do something wrong to be insecure, while Windows can't be
properly secured even if the user does everything right.

6. Have handouts with enough instructions to get people started. Such
material might include links to places they can get more help, minimal
instructions for installation (preferably some links here instead, so
they don't blame you if they try to install and screw things up badly;
but offer to help them get started as an alternative to following
instructions that might be foreign to them), how to use a few of the
tools (such as getting more software), maybe ways to set up persistence
(this will partly depend on what live distro you use, but there are
some ways to make quite a few others persistent) so they can continue
to use Winders, but have the live version as a safer alternative and
still keep some settings and bookmarks.

7. If they decide they aren't interested after you've shown them what
you can, don't pester them. They have to make the choice to be safer
and legal. It's not your place to push them on it. But if they are
interested, be prepared to help them a little, enough to get them
going. It won't be long before they won't need you much because they'll
already know what they need themselves.

Depending on your own circumstances, you might not be able to do all of
those things due to space, money, materials, time or whatever. But
doing as much as you can will make things easier and possibly more
successful.

I did a lot in an out-of-the-way forum for about 4 years. Nobody there
needs my help now except once in a great while. Some have moved out of
there, but they had already started working nearly 100% on their own
before they moved on. I consider that work an accomplishment on my
part, whether I'm needed there any longer or not. Some of the people I
helped are out there helping others. That's even better.

I used to burn a lot of live media and place copies in a couple of
libraries, on a free rack inside of a grocery store, give them away to
people who asked or to people who expressed curiosity, and other
things. I don't do those things any more, but I got a lot of people
started, I know for certain.

I probably should have sent that privately. But what's written is
written.

Agreed... the most important thing to do is find what people want to use a
tool for. Then find if the tool you are suggesting will serve them well. Now
it does not have to serve them as well in all ways - LibreOffice might not
serve them as well as MS Office, but desktop Linux as a whole might very
well serve them better than Windows, *esp*. if cost is a factor (and if they
are pirating Windows it sounds like that very much is).

would suggest sticking to one and then *maybe* having another if there are

If you need help here I create screencasts. In the middle of a big project
now, but I will volunteer to make some quick videos of how to do basic
things if you have something you want to show. I will post it to YouTube.
You can then not only walk people through the task but show them that they
can see it being done on YouTube whenever they want... and re-wind it and
re-play it as often as they want. Very powerful way to teach.

Tied to this show them the repository and how easy it is to install software
*if* it is there. And it often is. If they have needs that go outside of
what is found in the repository best to take such discussions "off line" -
outside of the group setting, at least when you go into details.

Right: respect people's choices. If they want Windows, great. If they want
OS X great. If they want Ubuntu, great. If they want PCLOS or Kubuntu or
whatever... all fine. Discourage piracy though... it is more of a headache

I live in a neighborhood with a lot of retired people. I am the neighborhood
tech guy. Lots of people with Linux here (as well as Windows and OS X... a
mixed environment as it should be - choice is good). I am having to help
people less and less... once they learn the basics it is amazing what they
can do.

A lesson: the biggest thing they need is fixing Windows. The Mac and Linux
people need that far less. When the Mac people need it they often can handle
it on their own (or with a free call to Apple). When Linux users run into
problems they re-install. :)

a linux environment. I should have been more vigorous in my support for
linux with my family, but I wasn't willing to give up my time to the
task. I should put more effort to it because I'm the one they all ask to
set up their new computers and I'm the one who has to help them when
they get into trouble.

I do not think you have an obligation to do so. I am an instructor / teacher
and have a passion for teaching (and for learning - using evidence and data
and logic and reason). I also have a passion for working with people, and
for working with technology. Given that I naturally gravitate toward
teaching people how to use technology, including Linux an open source tools
(though not limited to that by any means).

I find it interesting that so many of the COLA "advocates" see me as an
enemy when I almost surely have educated people about Linux and open source
products more than just about any of them.

I can't speak to everything you've done or haven't done. The same goes
for anyone else and my ability to describe their contributions.
Certainly many have done far more than I ever dreamed of doing. I've
had some productive time, but far more wasted time than anything else.

I feel as though I haven't done enough. But the difference between you
and I is really only a simple a matter of degree. And probably much
smaller degree than either of us can imagine.

You claim I am sending you forged emails claiming to be from Carroll. You
also claim to have talked to Carroll on a "burner phone" which, even though
you had the Caller ID info from, you could not call back (nobody said you

So how did I disguise my voice when I used this "burner phone"? Do you and

on the phone? Why not just call the number from your Caller ID and *ask*
Carroll about the emails? I am certain you will not get *me*... and it is
not hard to find my number so you can check to see if the Caller ID was from
me. Heck, check the area code from the Caller ID and see what state it came
from. Not mine (Carroll is in Colorado and I am in Arizona).

Bilk, you are unraveling... first talking about conversations you had with
Carroll on untraceable burner phones you could not call, even though you say
you had the Caller ID, to - now - somehow the call was not even with Carroll
but a synthesized voice and you do not even know if it was or was not a
burner phone like you said it was before. And you go back and forth - the
