Linux is winning the mobile war at the moment, then moving upwards to tablets and other
fast-growing markets.

Linux had already won other market segments like servers, DCs, routers, etc.

Haters gonna hate. Microsoft also has a history of hiring paid shills
to discredit the competition.

Reason why I ask is we have one Mactroll who is mostly ignored in
comp.sys.mac.advocacy, who has become the worst Wintroll here and behaves
just like them. Also, the nymshifting, lies and ad hominem attacks have
increased significantly.

Usually this type behaviour preceded a new Microsoft release in the past
(Windows 7, Office 2007, Windows XP, etc.)

This time I see see no definite new software on the horizon, why I asked
thinking I may have missed some bit of news.

These Wintroll and one Mactroll acts fit:

[quote]
7.1 Disinformation

If COLA were a physical location like a building where those who would
advocate the growth of the Linux operating systems and the Linux
community gather, the anti-Linux propagandists would be raiding that
building. They would be vandalizing the building, painting graffiti on
the walls, defecating and urinating on the floors and furniture,
breaking down the doors, setting fire to the building and physically
assaulting the resident Linux advocates and the visitors who happen to
be in the building at the time of the raid.

COLA is not a physical location, so they have had to adapt their
methods so that they can do an on-line version of what was described
in the prior paragraph. A key method used by anti-Linux propagandist
to attack Linux, its users, sysadmins, developers, advocates and those
who have come to COLA to lean about Linux. is a form of propaganda
known as disinformation. One of their favorite version of
disinformation is known as FUD.

Increased? The trolling's been high for years, apart from brief lulls while
the trolls take care of real-world functions. They're a real concatentation
of screwballs.

I don't think there *is* increased trolling here. There's always been
plenty!

What we *have* seen is the demise of a number of well-known nyms. for
example,
flatfish
DFS
amicus_curious
ezekiel
that linux-sux clown
... and the introduction of a whole batch of new and constantly changing
ones.

The "significant event" is actually a trend - a trend away from Microsoft,
and away from the "traditional desktop" as far as web access is concerned.

Perhaps you will recall that in January, I was saying that I expected that
the "traditional sources of statistics" (we access stats) would be showing
Microsoft to be:
Under 90% by April
Under 85% by the end of this year
Possibly around 75% by end 2012

That's well on track, and largely because the whole consumer market is
changing. I still reckon that over 80% of consumers (which is what these
stats are about) don't actually need a "traditional desktop" for what they
do,

Just note the change. Since Android "took off", we've seen very little
mention (from the Detractors) of Microsoft, and an increasing tendency for
them to refer to Apple. Also, note that they have finally followed my
suggestion that if they mean "desktop" they should say "desktop" when
quoting statistics - even though none of them can tell me what they mean by
"desktop". The best I've had so far is from raylopez99, who says that it's
something that runs MS Office natively, and thereby does Serious Work!

They used to do it when something significant happened with linux in
the past, too. But I think they slowed down there because every day was
starting to bring significant linux news.

Maybe they're just celebrating the birth of linux with us and they'll
calm down real soon.

A lot of the nymshifting started right after a couple of nymshifters
claimed flatso was room temperature. Flatfish can't post as flatfish to
tell that lie. Although, if s/h/it kept using the same nym long enough
s/h/it would out s/h/itself eventually.

I'm just waiting for the usual announcement that flatty is back to call
off its death hoax, which of most here wished it were true.

Regarding Linux, I guess then the Wintrolls are a dying breed and just
like a cockroach, shake a lot before they expire.

But yes, Linux is succeeding in leaps and bounds.

Except its not. Google have made a mess of Android and its currently a
malware infested pos. The fact its "free" and many handset mfrs can use
it is of course a boon to its adoption figures nonetheless. Desktop
Linux has gone pretty much nowhere unfortunately : and this despite the
failure in part of Vista. And part to blame is the likes of Schestowitz
telling lies and making Linux users look like a bunch of kooks.

With cloud based computing, whether corporate / company level or on-line
obviates the need for a traditional desktop. An appliance such as a blade
with keyboard and screen and browser is all that is needed.

I think your next point is on spot. They don't consider Fedora, Ubuntu,

No, we wholeheartedly concur with these 155 poster quotes on the Snit
Circus of Pathological Lies. Now in its sixth printing, alphabetised and
with substantial links, here are what these 155 posters have to say about
Snit:

1- Adam Kesher: "Steve, IIRC Sandman's website has a member area and a
login. If you forget your password, you can ask it to e-mail it to you,
and a bot will send an e-mail. *That* is the e-mail Snit got from
Sandman's website, and yes he's that fucked in the head and starved for
attention that he'd claim it to be an e-mail from Sandman himself. So,
don't get sucked into his little circus. The e-mail, in this particular
instance, did probably originate from Sandman.net." 27 Feb 2007

Something big did happen.

First flatcake went off line and then flat cake was pronounced
dead and then flat cake got resurrected in different nyms.

The attacks have all remained constant barring a short break
but all the attackers have shifted from pro-micoshaft anti-Linux to pro-
appil anti-Android Linux. It is still proprietary v. Linux with a completely
different tone, and all still emanating from US based technology companies.

Looks kike COLA must pay the price for the whims of some marketing
troll operation in one or more of these US companies.

I believe it is critical to understand what might have happened
within marketing departments at micoshaft, mokia, appil, oracle and facebook
etc to understand if any of them had inexplicably caused a drift
of the trolling direction by some policy change. It could be a marketing
department change of leadership, or some report had come out which
meant that Linux and Android is a big threat to all the screaming
ladies being employed to troll here.

"7", good observation, I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment, it is
spot on. Perhaps this is why Microsoft purchased Apple stock a decade ago
and bailed it out of hulk. It knew that had potential to pay dividends in
the future.

When COLA President "7" speaks, the COLA community listens! :-)

And once again you made yourself the laughing stock of usenet!

"By the end of 2011, nearly 635 million new PCs worldwide are expected to be
shipped with Windows 7. Many enterprises have been planning their deployment
of Windows 7 for the last 12 to 18 months, and are now moving rapidly to
Windows 7," Ms. Jump said.

Shipments of Apple iMacs and Mac OS share on new PCs have seen increases in
the last 12 months. Mac OS was shipped on 4 percent of new PCs worldwide in
2010 versus 3.3 percent in 2008. Mac OS is forecast to be on 4.5 percent of
PCs in 2011, and grow to 5.2 percent of new PCs in 2015. Shipments will grow
stronger in mature markets where consumers are buying into the Apple product
ecosystem.

"The adoption of Mac PCs and Mac OS is a result of Apple's ability to grow
well above the market average in the last 12 to 24 months, thanks to its
ease of use from the user interface (UI) point of view and ease of
integration with other Apple devices, such as the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
and the existing Apple ecosystem of applications and programs," Ms. Jump
said.

The Mac OS share still varies greatly by region, as Apple has much stronger
presence in North America and Western Europe. The fastest growth is expected
to happen in selected emerging countries, where Apple and Mac OS are growing
from a small base.

*Linux OS is expected to remain niche* over the next five years with its
share *below 2 percent* because of the remaining high costs of application
migration from Windows to Linux. In the consumer market, Linux will be run
on less than 1 percent of PCs, as Linux's success with mini-notebooks was
short-lived and few mini-notebooks are preloaded with it today.

The meteoric rise of mobile computing, and thus the death of the desktop
(taking Windows and Microsoft with it).

Even IBM, the inventor of the PC, has declared it dead. And HP, formerly

I would love to see some real discussions - remember, I am the one who keeps
asking for the name calling and bogus accusations to end. I want a higher

Interesting and reasonable perspective, Homer. I have to agree with you
on the monopolistic corporate totalitarianism. Microsoft doesn't know how
to compete except by monopoly maintenance.

For example, Glenn Cox, founder of the Cox series of model aeroplane
engines and ready to fly aircraft, put the competition out of business
with his ability to produce consistent high quality small displacement
engines cheaper than the competition. He developed a way with screw
machines, to turn out crank cases and other parts quickly and cheaply.

He dominated the scene for two decades, until retirement and the decline
of small internal combustion engines with the advent of powerful but
light weight electric motors and battery systems now prevalent today.

Microsoft OTOH, capitalised on monopoly maintenance and astroturfing,
marketing to get people to accept poor quality as a standard acceptable
for desktop PC's. Hence it was acceptable for crashes, security risks and
ad nauseum.

Having worked with minicomputers, engineering workstations and pre MS-DOS
operating systems, crashes and hangs, unexpected disfunctionality were
not common until MS-DOS and later Windows came on the scene.

Now had they concentrated on producing a high quality product cheaply
that was very optimised, stable, etc., there would be no question that
they could have continued to be popular and well liked.

It is odd how that I find among friends, acquaintances and co-workers,
that they basically tolerate Windows. When Vista came out they were very
disappointed, and the overall reaction to Windows 7 is "ho hum." Ditto
with the later Office versions, with their bloat and mediocre performance.

Yet the Wintrolls herein would like one to believe that everyone is
thrilled and enamoured with Microsoft products. That only goes to show
their agendas.

While it wouldn't surprise me if MS did that, I don't think I've ever
seen anyone provide clear & definitive proof.

However, this is COLA on USENET - - has there ever been any definitive
proof of Microsoft paying shills to work on USENET ... or better yet,
on COLA?

To keep it relevant, let's limit the terms to be the events of just
the last decade.

A better question to ask is "What precisely is it 'winning'?".

> The fact its "free" and many handset mfrs can use

In the cellular business, the smartphone segment is a huge growth
opportunity, and via Android, Google has given the cellular providers
an opportunity to crank out their old paradigm of "cheap junk"
handsets to entice consumers - - and with the higher monthly fees from
data plans, the providers are naturally in bed with this as a
promising business plan...and at the same time, the handset
manufacturers get to adopt Android and abolish much of their in-house
firmware development. However, this just follows the paradigm of
cheap, which doesn't necessarily translate into the best product value
from the consumer's perspective.

Unfortunately the case, which is why COLA now tries to talk up about
Android segment so much. The unfortunate part of this is that there's
an opportunity for making a pitch to home consumers by going against
the grain of Microsoft's current advertising campaign - - the one
where they turn some woman's living room into a PC store - - because
MS is trying to plant the suggestion that a 4 year old piece of
hardware should be considered obsolete and thus replaced with a new
one (including a new MS license).

Windows still have darn sturdy supporters. For example I am about to get
new toy an Atmel AVR based board. And the AVR Studio from Atmel is only
available on Windows - doh... I already installed it on Windows but will
try to run it with Wine. Day by day I think that this Wine project is
more important than it is advertised.

There are also some native AVR tools for Linux. Will start scouring for
them now. If someone has done any AVR programming with Linux using a
programmer like mine AVR JTAG MKII then please comment or email me
directly. My email in the headers is valid.

Speaking of kooks:

Not all these things are Android's fault per se : a

Linux is winning and Microsoft is losing. Microsoft still controls 98% of the PC market, but Linux and UNIX controls most of the Cell phone, Tablet, and media market, as well as an increasing share of the server market.

Worse, Microsoft's PC market has been causing PC makers such as Dell, HP, and Gateway to experience huge losses. With HP's choice to get out of the Desktop and Laptop market, Acer's purchase of Gateway to rescue the brand from bankruptcy, and Lenovo's purchase of IBM's PC division, the only major US owned PC company remaining is Dell, who has had to subsidize their PC losses with profits from servers, HDTV patents, and Android tablets.

UNIX is at the heart of Apple's iPhone and iPad, as well as the BlackBerry playbook. Linux is at the heart of Android, Kindle, Nook, and Sony E-books, as well as HP's WebOS.

Most people only need one laptop, but might also have an Android phone, a Kindle, and an iPad or Android tablet. Android tablets come in both 7 and 10 inch models, giving users the option of a lower priced tablet.

Linux is also showing up in more and more HDTV systems, allowing users to browses the web and download movies from the web as well the standard cable media options. Most cable boxes are also running Linux. I recently took my car in for repairs and they had to replace two computers running embedded versions of Linux. The mechanic then told me that there were actually 5 in the car.

Nearly all GPS devices and most media payers are also powered by embedded versions of Linux or UNIX.

Meanwhile, NetBooks are on fire-sales for under $200 each, because the Windows 7 Starter is nearly useless on the low-resolution, small memory, single CPU NetBook. Ironically, Linux runs very nicely on these devices, and makes better use of the more limited resources.

Linux and UNIX have come a very long way since the days of the 8 Mips SUN Workstations and the HP-9000 workstations. Those workstations had price tags of up to $40,000 and even then were often shared with a number of X11 terminals or PCs running X11. They were primarily used for CAD/CAM, Media Production, and industrial grade investors and analysts.

So why all the trolling?

Many of the trolls in COLA have a vested interest in the continued success of Miccrosoft. They write applications based on VB, IIS, and SQL Server. They have MCSE, MSP, A+, and similar Microsoft certifications, for which they have paid for both the exam and the "cram courses" to prepare for the exams.

Ironically, most of these Linux devices use much of the same technology and programming tools as Linux servers, and the user interfaces are more like lightweight clients and web browsers.

As a result, Linux scales from the $70 "digital picture frames" and similar "appliances" up through cell phones and tablets, on up through PCs, Blade, servers, and mainframes.

Microsoft now faces competition from Linux because Linux is supported by Oracle, IBM, SAP, Java, and about 95 of the 100 largest software companies by revenue.

The only software publishers still making money from Windows are the anti-virus makers, and even they end up getting "bumped off" by Retailers hoping to make at least a little profit by selling a customer a different anti-virus package than the one that came pre-installed with the machine, such as Kasparsky.

Ironically, the only profit available from PCs these days comes from the same place where Linux FIRST started making it's profits, the support contracts. These days, you can pay $400 for a PC, and $300 for an extended warranty and replacement program, and another $100 for the anti-virus package.

But of course, the WinTrolls try to claim that their beloved Windows PC completely dominates the market because it controls 98% of the DHCP assigned public internet addresses. Most cell phones, tablets, and cable companies provide access through NAT firewalls that are shared with Windows devices.

It's hard to argue with the numbers.

Most of the US PC makers have been losing their shirts in the PC market. E-Machines and Gateway were on the verge of bankruptcy before they were purchased in corporate take-overs. IBM sold off it's PC division to Lenovo, and the result was a dramatic improvement in IBM's profitability. HP is considering a similar move.

Since the release of Vista, PC makers have planned and built their machine for a target price of about $1,000 which would give them a modest margin of around 20%. However, corporate and retail customers have rejected both Vista and Windows 7, extending their refresh rates from 2 years to as much as 5 years, to reduce the number of Windows 7 licenses they have to pay for and maintain. Many companies have agreed to keep/maintain their Windows licenses on the condition that they can use their existing licenses for Windows 7 professional corporate installs on PCs shipped with Windows 7 (Home or Professional).

Microsoft claims the entire inventory of Windows licenses as Windows 7 but examination of the actual deployment metrics indicates that most coporations are holding on to Windows XP and hoping for an alternative to Microsoft - such as a Linux flavor for PCs that's similar to what Android is for Tablets (Chromium?).

Many companies are also making it as easy as possible to install ANY Linux distribution from a DVD or USB memory stick. Most corporations to Linux testing before they purchase machines, and machines that don't run Linux effortlessly don't even make the first cut.

Retail customers interested in running Linux can test the PCs by rebooting them with the Linux on Memory stick. If a machine fails to run the basic distribution - it doesn't even make the cut.

As a result, PCs that are "Linux Ready" are selling for $600-$800 and high resolution displays and extra memory push the price into $1200 to $1500. On the other hand, "Linux Hostile" machines are often sold in bulk at stores like Best Buy for $399 to $450 each.

Ironically, customers who want a "High End Linux" system often order directly from the manufacturer via their web site. This way they can get the Full-HD (1900x1200) display, the i7 processor, 8 gig of RAM, and a full replacement program. They often also get bigger and faster hard drives, such as the Momentus XT hybrid hard drives. The two things Linux users DON'T purchase are the extended "Support Plan" (which only provides Windows support), and Microsoft Office 2010.

Windows 7 has been selling well. Much better than Vista.

Interesting that you say they are hoping for an alternative. Many in COLA
say one already exists.

What companies? Can you back this?

But who does this?

So using Linux will cost you much more than using Windows... as much or more
than using OS X. Interesting.
