Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) filed a formal complaint with European antitrust
regulators about Google Inc. (GOOG)’s dominance of the Internet search
market in the region.
Google bars competitors from accessing its YouTube video site for search
results and has kept phones running Microsoft’s operating system from
working properly with YouTube, Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft said in a
blog posting by General Counsel Brad Smith.
A Microsoft unit and two other rivals last year lodged a complaint with the
European Union, which is investigating whether Google has violated the
region’s antitrust laws. Google is under growing pressure from global
regulators that are probing whether the company uses its dominance of Web
search to thwart competition.
“Our filing today focuses on a pattern of actions that Google has taken to
entrench its dominance in the markets for online search and search
advertising to the detriment of European consumers,” Smith wrote in the blog
posting.
</quote>
Such concern for European consumers on the part of Microsoft is indeed
touching, having regard to their record of indifference when Explorer used
to dominate the browser market.
However, those days are long gone, and it will be interesting to see whether
this new concern will manifest itself further in Microsoft no longer
insisting that all new PCs be supplied with Windows pre-installed.

Google also has signed contracts that block top European websites from
distributing rival search boxes, Microsoft said. For example, Microsoft
can't distribute some e-mail and document services through certain
European telecommunications companies that have contracts with Google
because these services make use of Bing search boxes, Smith said.
A few technical specifics would be nice.

As much as I don't like Microsoft (the business), I would hate to see Google
actually able to accomplish the "chokehold" on Internet access that
Microsoft tried to put in place with Internet Explorer on its Windows

The main difference between Google and M$ is that people choose to use
Google's products and services and are not forced to do so. I agree
that I would not want to see Google choosing the same route.

And you were not aware that its illegal to dereference a null pointer in
C AND you code for Windows systems and claimed that you and Koehlmann
were world class programmers or words to that affect.
My God you're a creepy little poseur.
That's because Google and Apple have an arrangement where Google
serves/delivers iTube videos to iOS devices.
It's so simple to verify this that even you could do it yourself. Go to
YouTube and watch any video.... notice that it's delivered via Adobe Flash.
"Adobe Flash" doesn't run on iOS devices. So when you watch a video on an
iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, etc. it goes through a special URL that Google
supplies for Apple users where the same video is delivered without requiring
Flash.
It has nothing to do with Apple developers being able to "code" anything. It
has everything to do with contracts and arrangements that Google has with
various companies.

Presumably, they're using the iFrame API, which anyone can use:

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm under the impression that
*Microsoft* puts all it's European business through Ireland, thereby
availing itself of the very low Corporation Tax - by far the lowest
(typically half) of any in the E.U..
After that, my understanding is that it does a "Double-Irish", moving the
profits to Holland, and from there to the Cayman islands.
Have I got that wrong?
Nope, & M$ does not just channel it's European business through Ireland.
It seems that *much* of it's *international* profits are put through
Ireland too, so you can guess it'll be moving some of it's US profits
through there thus avoiding paying the full amount it owes in US taxes.
Accounts for Microsoft Ireland Research, an Irish subsidiary of the global
software giant, show that the company paid just €460,000 in tax, on
profits of more than €1.2 billion last year, by using provisions in
Irish tax law to take its corporation tax bill down from €158m. Much of
Microsoft’s international profits are channelled through Ireland, but
because the main company for Microsoft’s activities has unlimited
liability, it does not have to file detailed accounts.
http://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2008/05/04/microsoft-tax-avoider/
And according to the Irish Times:
Microsoft Ireland Operations Ltd (MIOL) had turnover of €11.3 billion
and paid corporation tax of €63.5 million according to accounts just
lodged with the Companies Office and seen by The Irish Times.

These "service restrictions" are very possibly the problem. I'm 99.999% sure
that MS has the ability to play streaming content from YouTube provided that
YouTube isn't actively blocking/hindering MS from accessing the videos.
That's why I pointed out that the ridiculous "LMAO" comment about MS having
"great developers" has nothing to do with this if Google is simply blocking
MS from the videos. It's ridiculous for someone to think that the issue here
is MS not being able to develop the technology to play a simple H.264 video.

Cool example. But that's not the pointer bug that was being discussed. I
found the thread here if you're interested:

The (buggy) code is effectively this:
<code>
struct sock *sk = tun->sk;
...
if (!tun)
return POLLERR; // Return error if tun is NULL
</code>
The fix is to check for !tun before dereferencing tun->sk and not
afterwards.
The arguing, denial and claims in that thread were quite ridiculous so I'm

YouTube provides content in three formats: Flash, MPEG-4 and WebM. The
first is a proprietary standard provided by a third-party, Adobe, and
available only to those whom Adobe chooses to support. The second is
also a proprietary standard, licensed by patent trolls known as the
MPEG-LA, and legally (in certain countries) available only to those who
pay them royalties. However, the latter is a Free Standard available to
everyone without prejudice, and royalty free.
If Microsoft has a problem with Flash not working on Phone 7, then it
should take the matter up with the culprit, Adobe, not Google. If it has
a problem with the licensing for MPEG-4 and H.264, then it should take
the matter up with the MPEG-LA. But if Microsoft has a problem with WebM
and VP8 not working on Phone 7, then it has no one to blame but itself.
It is a Free Standard, after all.
It seems to me that Microsoft is actually complaining, in a rather
manipulative way, that YouTube doesn't support whatever format is
preferred by Microsoft (most likely Windows Media). The irony, and crass
hypocrisy, of this is that Google would then be expected to jump through
the same hoops with Microsoft, as Microsoft does with Adobe.
But it isn't incumbent upon Google to support World plus dog's preferred
media formats, it's up to others to support whatever formats Google
provides, /if/ they actually want access to Google's content. And since
at least one method of accessing that content uses Free Standards, no
one has any reasonable cause for complaint.
But then Microsoft's complaint clearly isn't meant to be reasonable,
it's just a manipulative attack on its rival. As usual.
> Google also has signed contracts that block top European websites

If that's true, and in particular if it really is a matter of contracts
rather than merely a technical restriction that Microsoft refuses to
address for "political" reasons, then yes Google should indeed be
sanctioned.
But given what I've seen of Microsoft's "complaint" so far, I find it
highly dubious.
More of the usual deceptive machinations from Microsoft.

It's pointless hoping for fairness in a system that's inherently
corrupted by lobbying, especially where the most influential lobbyists
are those with the most cash. Representation should be determined by
/merit/, not power and wealth.
That immediately puts global monopolists at an unfair advantage, and
pretty much rules out fair representation for anything without Big
Corporate backing, such as the Free Software movement in general, even
if that movement comprised a majority of the electorate. We'd need a
"Free Software Incorporated" monopolist for that, and obviously that's
not only unlikely to ever happen, but is in fact antithetical to Free
Software doctrine.
It's a catch 22, where the only solution is to break the circle of
corruption, and ensure that the only people legally entitled to
political representation are /real/ people, not "legal entities", like
monopolistic corporations, who seek to corrupt the system against the
better interests of the people that system is supposed to serve.

playback pages of the Service itself", using "wget" as the HTTP client.
Also note, WRT Microsoft's claim that Google prohibits Microsoft
searching YouTube and using those search results in Bing:
4. H. You agree not to use or launch any automated system, including
without limitation, "robots," "spiders," or "offline readers,"
that accesses the Service in a manner that sends more request
messages to the YouTube servers in a given period of time than a
human can reasonably produce in the same period by using a
conventional on-line web browser. Notwithstanding the foregoing,
YouTube grants the operators of public search engines permission
to use spiders to copy materials from the site for the sole
purpose of and solely to the extent necessary for creating
publicly available searchable indices of the materials, but not
caches or archives of such materials.
IOW search operators can crawl and index, but can't flood or mirror.
Seems fair enough.
So what was Microsoft's "complaint", again?

So it is not up to MS to support other's formats - it is up to others to
support MS's formats if they want to work with Windows well. Interesting
view you have their.

Microsoft doesn't have anything else. They're desperate. Wait till the

street.

Microsoft has accumulated quite a track record for itself. I can't help but
wonder how much longer WinTrolls here will continue to look the other
way and continue to give them a free pass on everything they do.
Hypocrites. Google has been *accused* of a lot things -- it doesn't make
it fact -- though you're wrong in assuming every Linux is in their pocket.
Meanwhile Microsoft has anti-trust agreements littering their past -- and
lawsuits they've lost for stealing other's innovations.

Of course. No argument, resort to character assassination. How typical of
a WinTroll.
Bitter, eh?
Last time I checked, I never got any spam from Google.

And if you're going to play ignorant and claim "what fines... what have they

Google Buzz giving away user data in direct violation of the privacy policy.

Which, of course, does not mean they are guilty of everything they are
accused of.

Nice attempt to move the goal posts.
Your previous post was "Google has been accused. -- it doesn't make it a
fact."
Current post - "They're pikers compared to Microsoft."
It sounds like you're no longer denying that Google has accumulated a track
record and reputation of doing whatever it takes and screwing whoever it
takes just to make an extra buck or two.
Translation - 98% of his posts are as useless as shit and you know it.
And what percentage of flatline's and dfs's posts are *not* worthless
shit? Admit it, you hypocrite, you have a double standard.
And how many of "chrisv's" posts actually come from chrisv and not from
some serial nymshifter, like your "high-fiving" buddy flatline?
The point that is being made, which seems to go over your head, is that MS
is shunned by "advocates" and accused of all sorts of things based on having
been found doing wrong. Now Google was found doing wrong and has to pay a
pretty heavy price - and the "advocates" seem to be unable to care less.
Why is that?

No, just stating the fact that the company you seem to *never* find any
fault with is a much worse serial violator of other's rights than is
Google. But nice attempt to ignore that fact, hypocrite.
> Your previous post was "Google has been accused. -- it doesn't make it a

Like, duh, that's why I said they were "piker's in the game." If they're
"pikers in the game" that means -- OBVIOUSLY -- they have some guilt. What
part of this is too hard for you to grasp? But, again, it's pure hypocrisy
to ignore all the documented cases of Microsoft's guilt and zero in the
relatively minor accusations against Google.
Typical of a WinTroll hypocrite.

No, that's not what I'm "admitting." I'm saying that, like most
corporations they are not innocent. But next to Microsoft they're as pure
as the driven snow.
I assume by your lack of defense for Microsoft that you admit that they
are serial thieves -- who try to steal whatever they can get from wherever
they can get it. And that they are thugs who run over other's rights to
force their crap down their throats. That is what you're admitting by your
lack of defense for Microsoft... correct?
No? But isn't that what silence implies?
(Two can play this stupid game of putting words in another's mouth.)
Right. You're the one who can't say one bad word about Microsoft and I'm
"the hypocrite."
You and Snit. What a of couple of fine little, Microsoft/Apple butt-

Now that Apple and Microsoft have figured out they can't compete with Open
Source, they're trying to bludgeon Google to death with lawyers and
proxies. Problem is that they forgot to notice -- Google isn't one of the
small companies that they're used to screwing over.
You and Snit will figure it out one of these days.

Huh? I do not excuse either company for their wrongs and speak honestly
about them. And about Google's. I do not really focus on any of that,
though - I care more about the products than the companies.

How so? They have been caught doing all sorts of privacy violations, for
example. The current problem is only one - how about their collecting of
passwords and other private data from wifi? I never see any "advocate" go

CSMA I have seen in the past year a real hatred among people, besides the
typical Mac vs. Windows typical argument. I feel that it is like being in
a room of really young children trying there best to best the other
person. The one common thing among all of this seems to be you. I hate to
be like this, but facts are facts. You seem to be in the middle of a great
percentage of arguments. CSMA has become less about Macs and more about
"look everybody, I think he lied". Is there no end then all this picking
at each other on such a personal level. CSMA has always been al little
adversarial but you have personally crank it up to the point that this
place is no longer fun. Congratulations on stopping CSMA and making this

Actually, now that I've read about this - it has NOTHING to do with the
ability to play the video. That's not what this is about - MS is
saying the Google is purposely blocking Bing and other competitors from
properly indexing the youtube site... Basically, stacking the Google
results so that theirs are always better than the competitions when
searching youtube. Which if true, is probably a valid claim.

Sure I have... Steve Carroll, Sandman and now you have been obsessively
looking for wrong-doing by me for over half a decade. I post a lot, and yet
you cannot find any examples of me acting as horribly as you three do. But!
As I have shown, if you look at quotes *about* someone from the last half
decade, esp. anyone who posts a lot, you can find people saying things about
that person which are not nice. Add to that the number of socks and
forgeries on the list (and there are quite a few) and it is easy to come up
with such a list. Easy, that is, for pathetic and obsessive trolls such as
you, Carroll and Sandman.
In the end, the three of you have failed to quote *me* doing as the three of
you do on a regular basis: lying and worse. You each *hate* the fact you
cannot get me to sink to the level where you scum live.
It really is that simple. And there you go - but you will still pretend
like your obsessive desire to get back at me for being, gasp!, honest and
honorable is hard to explain.

Poor RonB is on the ropes and staggering to get out.
