Such concern for European consumers on the part of Microsoft is indeed
touching, having regard to their record of indifference when Explorer used
to dominate the browser market.
However, those days are long gone, and it will be interesting to see whether
this new concern will manifest itself further in Microsoft no longer
insisting that all new PCs be supplied with Windows pre-installed.

As much as I don't like Microsoft (the business), I would hate to see Google
actually able to accomplish the "chokehold" on Internet access that
Microsoft tried to put in place with Internet Explorer on its Windows
platform.

Google's products and services and are not forced to do so. I agree

serves/delivers iTube videos to iOS devices.
It's so simple to verify this that even you could do it yourself. Go to
YouTube and watch any video.... notice that it's delivered via Adobe Flash.
"Adobe Flash" doesn't run on iOS devices. So when you watch a video on an
iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, etc. it goes through a special URL that Google
supplies for Apple users where the same video is delivered without requiring
Flash.
It has nothing to do with Apple developers being able to "code" anything. It
has everything to do with contracts and arrangements that Google has with
various companies.

Youtube's videos are normal video files delivered over normal HTTP requests.
The youtube.com site does use a flash video player but it is not a technical
requirement to play the videos.
I use minitube (a non flash native desktop application) to search and play
youtube videos. Technically it is not chanlenging but there are terms of
service restrictions and that is probably what is stopping Microsoft.

(typically half) of any in the E.U..
After that, my understanding is that it does a "Double-Irish", moving the

Google has accumulated quite a track record for itself. I can't help but
wonder how much longer advocates here will continue to look the other way
and continue to give them a free pass on everything they do.
I don't have numbers available (and don't feel like looking it up) but I'd
say that for the past couple of years Google has been investigated and fined
more than Microsoft. Just take a look at the number of currently active
investigations/probes/allegations against Google.

YouTube provides content in three formats: Flash, MPEG-4 and WebM. The
first is a proprietary standard provided by a third-party, Adobe, and
available only to those whom Adobe chooses to support. The second is
also a proprietary standard, licensed by patent trolls known as the
MPEG-LA, and legally (in certain countries) available only to those who
pay them royalties. However, the latter is a Free Standard available to
everyone without prejudice, and royalty free.
If Microsoft has a problem with Flash not working on Phone 7, then it
should take the matter up with the culprit, Adobe, not Google. If it has
a problem with the licensing for MPEG-4 and H.264, then it should take
the matter up with the MPEG-LA. But if Microsoft has a problem with WebM
and VP8 not working on Phone 7, then it has no one to blame but itself.
It is a Free Standard, after all.
It seems to me that Microsoft is actually complaining, in a rather
manipulative way, that YouTube doesn't support whatever format is
preferred by Microsoft (most likely Windows Media). The irony, and crass
hypocrisy, of this is that Google would then be expected to jump through
the same hoops with Microsoft, as Microsoft does with Adobe.
But it isn't incumbent upon Google to support World plus dog's preferred
media formats, it's up to others to support whatever formats Google
provides, /if/ they actually want access to Google's content. And since
at least one method of accessing that content uses Free Standards, no
one has any reasonable cause for complaint.
But then Microsoft's complaint clearly isn't meant to be reasonable,
it's just a manipulative attack on its rival. As usual.

If that's true, and in particular if it really is a matter of contracts
rather than merely a technical restriction that Microsoft refuses to
address for "political" reasons, then yes Google should indeed be
sanctioned.
But given what I've seen of Microsoft's "complaint" so far, I find it
highly dubious.
More of the usual deceptive machinations from Microsoft.

ago. In short Google's "privacy statement" said one thing while they were
deliberately doing something completely different with users personal data

Official flash support is already in the works. It will be released
around the same time as the Mango update later this year. That will be
the release with IE9 mobile (supporting html 5 and hardware accelerated
rendering). I imagine, that adobe didn't want to put effort into the
short lived IE7 mobile that is currently on the phone.
As for the rest, not sure what the deal is. I can play youtube videos
just fine with the youtube app . But, I'm here in the states, so
things might be different over there in the EU.

It's pointless hoping for fairness in a system that's inherently
corrupted by lobbying, especially where the most influential lobbyists
are those with the most cash. Representation should be determined by
/merit/, not power and wealth.
That immediately puts global monopolists at an unfair advantage, and
pretty much rules out fair representation for anything without Big
Corporate backing, such as the Free Software movement in general, even
if that movement comprised a majority of the electorate. We'd need a
"Free Software Incorporated" monopolist for that, and obviously that's
not only unlikely to ever happen, but is in fact antithetical to Free
Software doctrine.
It's a catch 22, where the only solution is to break the circle of
corruption, and ensure that the only people legally entitled to
political representation are /real/ people, not "legal entities", like
monopolistic corporations, who seek to corrupt the system against the
better interests of the people that system is supposed to serve.

Actually, now that I've read about this - it has NOTHING to do with the
ability to play the video. That's not what this is about - MS is
saying the Google is purposely blocking Bing and other competitors from
properly indexing the youtube site... Basically, stacking the Google
results so that theirs are always better than the competitions when
searching youtube. Which if true, is probably a valid claim.
