We spend lots of time in these groups lately talking about "smartphone
platforms", and about "walled gardens" and "software freedom" and the
benefits of vertical integration over multi-vendor hardware platforms
(or vice versa).

Regular people do not think in these terms at all. They think in terms
of _individual products_ and the capabilities that they have. (And they
only understand those capabilities if vendors can effectively
communicate about them. Which most can't.)

Regular people don't think about lot of things, nor their consequemces.

They don't vote.
They blame teachers for their children's lack of progress.
They dangerously cut each other off in traffic.
They rail against illegal immigrants taking their jobs... the jobs very
few others will do.
Then they rail against immigration laws, saying they encourage racial
profiling.
They buy houses they can't afford.
They don't care about government surveillance.
They don't care if big companies trade fairly.
They want off shore drilling, until there's a spill.
They don't wind farms, until gas prices rise, and still not in their
sight.

It is what it is.

Demand more/better public services while complaining about taxes.

Loudly protest against air pollution while smoking a cigarette.

Complain about waiting time in hospital urgencies when they should not be
there in the first place.

Transportation accidents is the first cause of deaths for people under 30
(or was it 35) years old, yet many people drive with more alcohol than water
in their blood, have complete disrespect for the speed limits, and generally
could not care less if they *murder* someone with their vehicles.

Complain and protest about jobs being exported, yet don't think twice before
buying cheap goods produce by people earning lousy wages in conditions that
would result in criminally prosecution in Europe or the USA.

Make loans to go on vacations, and spend the rest of the year paying it back
with high interests, to repeat the same next vacation.

Regards.

So the kids don't think of the iPhone as being smart, they think of it as a
frivolous toy. And the two-thirds number sounds like pure, unadulterated
bullshit. And you know it.

This sounds like a made up story to me. I mean a few kids
would know that the iPhone is a smartphone. Maybe this is a
reflection on how poor our educational system is these days that
these kids don't know what a smartphone is. Maybe he was talking
to kindergartners or first graders, they probably wouldn't know
that the iPhone is a smartphone. Like he said if he asked about
them having a Blackberry someone would have raised their hands.
But I still think this BLOG is a made up story.

Yea given that the Blackberry is more popular than the
iPhone, doubt this story from a BLOG is true. He doesn't even

It's a variation on "blame the user" and it's a classic
tactic from the Linux zealot's tool kit.

They do the same with Linux in fact.

Discussion of the advantages of Linux over Windows are
few compared to the numerous "Microsoft sucks, etc" type
posts.

It's sad that the Linux community has so little good to
say about their operating system and prefer to play the
blame game rather than listen to the users and fix what
is wrong with Linux.

When you are a Linux advocate, it's always someone elses
fault.
It's never Linux's fault.

Nor does it make it correct... and the fact that the general assumption that
the problem with Linux / Linux adoption (at least on the desktop) is that
people are stupid is a cop-out. It allows Rick and others who make /
support such arguments to keep their very external locus of control. If you
and Rick and others in the Linux "advocate" group could game a more internal
locus of control for yourself and for the products you support then you
would be able to be *much* better advocates for it.

It's like the original article implied.

It's not that there's any "blame" to be assigned here.

The average consumer simply doesn't care.

All of the fanboy drooling is lost on them.

The fact that it is a "smart phone" is probably not meaningful.

[deletia]

Although the blogger could have approached the question from a functional
perspective and probably could have gotten a lot more useful information
out of it and it wouldn't have been just a mindless fanboy fluff piece.

In what? They are interested in saving money... and yet for their desktops,
by and large, they do not select Linux which can be had for *free*. You
then try to compare this to OS X which has more desktop users and is almost
always over $1000... hardly an impulse purchase for most!

Since you missed it: it is herd mentality that allows people to know that
when one of the he herd does something the rest of the herd is likely to do
much the same or, at least, not question it and tacitly support it.

The idea that one is a crowd is your own idea... one you falsely attributed
to me based on your lack of understanding. But do not worry - your herd
will not call you on it. You can bet on that!

>>> Second, as a rule, people are fairly, well, let's say...

Well, sure, there are more topics any one of us is not interested in than
ones we are interested in. But people often are interested in the
technology they use.

Ah, you missed the meaning of that, too. They are interested in getting
things for the lowest price. This is *especially* true in times of a poor
economy. Sure, they are *also* interested in convenience, what serves them
well, etc.

Nobody said *anyone* saying *anything* makes it so. You made that up. You
do that a lot. When you are clearly lost you just make things up. It is
rather funny to watch. You think you are being clever in obfuscating you
ignorance but you are just highlighting it.

Such as? Not that I have not been shown to be wrong, but you cannot find
any relevant examples. This is clear.

same as it is with Mr Wong, even if he were to be honest now, it would
be impossible to determine where the honesty starts and the usual
dishonesty ends. In my primary school, one of the teachers was very keen
on proverbs, and I recall her going over the "cry wolf" story. Mr
Glasser could "cry wolf" over and over now, and I would not come to help
him with his sheep, because I do not know any way of determining if he's
ever telling the truth, or indeed, if he ever has." 2 Dec 2006

post since its all about him and he managed to make me think about him
today. A friend of mine has a toddler. I went over to her house and
videotaped her kid doing a bunch of cute toddler stuff then burned a DVD
of it for her. While we were watching the DVD her kid got mad. He got
mad because we quit making him the center of attention and made that kid
on the tv the center of attention. He even ran up to the tv and tried to
block our view of it. That's how Snit lives his whole life." 30 Sep 2006

"The point that keeps whooshing over your head Snit, is Elizabot made no
threat to you before you went to the police. She made a promise.
Admittedly, to your delusional spaced out paranoiac view point, Elizabot
was suddenly "threatening" to you. In so much as you had to take your
kooky self down to your local police shop and blub on their shoulders
about how much in danger you were in [sob, whine], and they had to waste
valuable policing time consoling you over your stupidity. I bet they

It's common for tech industry pundit types (and COLA posters) to make
sweeping statements about what the market wants based essentially on
their own extremely unrepresentative personal preferences. I'm merely
posting this as a way of illustrating just how unrepresentative those

It's common for CSMA posters to make weeping statements about what the

The same can be said for many subsets of populations.

Yes, I understand my opinions are not representative of the "general

Agreed, which means that the phrase "The CSMA Crowd" could have also
been used as a generalization, if there was any reason to refer to
that group.

And that does indeed happen. YMMV on if it happens with sufficiently
adequate disclaimers often enough.

And thus perhaps a difference between COLA & CSMA posters?

FWIW, its easy to caveat this with a "not counting the respective
trolls for each, of course", but the challenge (for both) is the
degree to which it may be appropriate to similarly apply to the
flamingly irrational kooks...of both.

But your herd is more than one person. How, Rick, would your herd be just
one person? Remember: you made that claim up... but you will run when asked

And you will make personal attacks. You are very predictable.

Oh, and it just as predictable that your herd will not speak out against

A classic case of misinformation through lack of information.
How old were the kids - kids that didn't know that an iPhone was a
SmartPhone.
How affluent the neighborhood - that two thirds of the parents had
iPhones.
How many kids raised their hands because they wanted the other kids to
think their parents were cool?
Given that iPhones make up less than 5% of the total cell phone base,
the poll showing that 2/3 of the parents had cell phones - was already
suspicious. He didn't ask how many parents had BlackBerrys, he didn't
ask how many had Droids, or how many had phones with keyboards
(MediaPhones).

> We spend lots of time in these groups lately talking about "smartphone
> platforms", and about "walled gardens" and "software freedom" and the

> (or vice versa).

How many of those kids, and their parents used Google? Bought
something from Amazon or E-Bay?

How many ate at BurgerKing, Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken, or Taco
Bell?

How many sent e-mail, or text messages?

Most people don't know how their car works, but they know how to
drive.
Most people don't know how their electricity is generated, but they
know how to turn on the switch.

About 80% of the technology on which we totally depend, people
couldn't explain, and they certainly wouldn't know who created it.

Apple and Microsoft spend $billions to promote their brand, spend
$billions in legal fees to defend their brand from competitors, and
use this combination to make sure that their brand gets major coverage
in the press, that people know their brands.

The electricity coming into your home - do you know who makes the
generators? Do you know the names of the coal companies who provide
the coal? Do you know who makes the transformers? Who makes the wire
used in the transmission lines? Who made the wire in your house? Who
made the switch on the wall, or the outlet?

However, you might be able to guess that the light bulb was made by
Sylvania or General Electric. Does that mean that EVERYTHING was made
by Sylvania?

The same is true with Microsoft and Apple.

About 90% of the infrastructure for the Internet is Open Source
software, Linux, and Unix. Most of the servers are connected to back-
end systems created by IBM, HP, and Sun, and databases like DB2,
Oracle, and Sybase. The back-end systems are usually based on UNIX,
such as AIX, HP_UX, and Solaris. Windows servers function as
gateways, caching databases, and for smaller companies too small to
afford Unix systems. And Linux servers provide small self-contained
servers, as well as much of the "glue" functionality for those big
UNIX servers.

But how many people know any of this? The reality is that most
companies don't want you to know the details of their back-end
infrastructure. What they do want, is for you to be able to order
their products, and pay the bills - using IE and FireFox.

> Regular people do not think in these terms at all. They think in terms
> of _individual products_ and the capabilities that they have. (And they
> only understand those capabilities if vendors can effectively
> communicate about them. Which most can't.)

Yes, they know they have an LG ENV-3 Touch, but they don't know that
the phone is powered by Linux.
They know they have a Motorola phone, but they don't know whether that
phone is running Linux (many are).

Even most so-called "dumb" phones are powered by Symbian, and Python,
a popular language originally developed for Linux. Symbian itself is
now Open Source. Symbian blurrs the line between "SmartPhone" and
traditional cell phones, often billed as a "Media Phone".

How many of those kids would have known whether their own phone was
running Symbian or not?

But if you asked those kids - how many had a browser on their cell
phone? Most of the hands would have gone up.
If you asked them how many of their phones had texting - all of the
hands would have gone up.

I suspect that this class might have been much younger, since the
teacher didn't ask those in the classroom how many of THEM had
iPhones.

Huh? Put what what way? To note that Apple does not have a strong presence

factual evidence that proves beyond the shadow of doubt you nymshifted

Is Sandman lying? I think not. He provides very logical and methodical
documented investigative reasoning into your nymshifting, excellent
detective work. So, your continuous denial does not obviate the facts.

You don't have to be quoted Michael. That is it, you leave enough of an
evidence trail, that people transparently see through your shenanigans.

Is it Michael? Do I pretend? Those are your words, but they bear
little fruit.

No Michael, Steve Carroll did not admit that. Rather he expressed
disdain at your false accusations.

Yawn. You are getting boring. Again. Sandman's lies and my quoting
correctly is not proof of my wrong doing.

It is beyond idiotic that you would claim otherwise, but you repeatedly do.

Sandman has admitted that his site is there just to troll people. No other
reason. As far as Sandman's evidence, it consists of Sandman whining that
people read his posts and figure out he, like you, is a troll.

Nothing about me at all. Well, other than lies (such as the BS about me
using Tor to hide tracks).

You cannot quote me doing as you accuse. Hence you do not. Ever. You just
make things up and use obsessively gathered and forged comments about me.

In other words: you beg. And you troll.

It is simply a fact you pretend your BS counts as support. Look at the post

Wait... it was Tim Adams who insisted that Steve and his "dog" posted from
the same IP address. Whatever... I proved elsewhere it was Steve and nobody
in their right mind ever questioned it. So what is your point?

Sandman never made such a statement. Regarding trolling:

has a fragile ego. I needn't agree nor disagree with the points above. I
don't care about them. Your constant complaints, whines, rages, etc.,

LOL, Snit back at his pathological lies. Gee, what a luser. Snit hides
behinds his keyboard denying the truth. Nonetheless, the record bears
witness, the link snit snipped, accusing Sandman of lying:

Michael Digest: Omar sock puppet
Digests, Jonas Eklundh

So there was a "new" poster in CSMA (and usenet); Omar Murad Asfour. He
posted this:

Subject Rotating movies
From "Omar Murad Asfour"
Date 09/02/2009 19:48:14

I have a camera that also takes videos. Sometimes I hold the camera
sideways. How do you rotate the videos once they are in iMovie?
Omar Murad Asfour

A generic question about something Mac-related. Nice.
The first to reply is Snit:

Subject Re: Rotating movies
From Snit
Date 09/02/2009 19:59:18

Where he talks about a free alternative to QuickTime for the task at
hand. Thank you Snit!

Subject Re: Rotating movies
From Snit
Date 09/02/2009 19:59:18

Omar thanks Snit and would be on his way to solve his video-related
issues, right?

Subject Re: Rotating movies
From Snit
Date 09/02/2009 20:34:29

For some reason, Snit responds to Omar to post a claim about others in
csma. He makes a prediction about how Omar will be called Snits sock
puppet? Now why would anyone do that? Yes, why...

Subject Re: Rotating movies
From Sandman
Date 09/02/2009 21:58:47

I greet the new poster very politely, welcoming him to the group. This
is the tone I keep throughout my communication with Omar

Subject Re: Rotating movies
From "Omar Murad Asfour"
Date 09/02/2009 23:10:30

Does his reading your posts or not make you call people names all
the time?

Then he makes an explicit claim about Steve Carroll, a poster he
supposedly know nothing about other than the links Snit posted.
A very strange thing to claim for a completely new poster to the group,
indeed. It's almost as if he has a prior agenda.

Subject Re: Rotating movies
From "Omar Murad Asfour"
Date 09/03/2009 08:34:30

When I point this out, he does a classical Snit and asks why he wouldn't
know what he has been shown, as if he has been shown what Steve Carroll
does "all the time".

Ok, so this new guy surely acts strangely for someone new, things like:

* Supporting Snit, this is very unusual for csma
* Having no usenet history
* Using x-private, a usenet provider for being anonymous, highly
unusual for someone new
* Attacking the exact same people Snit always target
* Posts from the same area as Snit (Arizona)

http://csma.sandman.net/media/cache/img/CSM/2009/09/Atlas/Media/modules/articleimages/CSM/2009/09/05/10/Screen_shot_20090905_at_085627_1781503783.png

Also, Omar posts at the same times as Snit, especially noteworthy is
that he doesn't post if Snit isn't posting. So if Snit is busy one night
(as 9/3 above) then neither Snit or Omar will post to usenet.

All of these are highly suspicious behavior supports the claim that he
is a Snit sockpuppet of course, but not without doubt.

Subject Re: My PPC is almost unsellable
From Sandman
Date 09/04/2009 11:46:33

But when I posted about the above stats, Omar visited with a french IP
and since Snit is known to use TOR proxies to hide his tracks, this is
pretty solid proof.

But that's not all. The most solid proof is that Omar is posting from
the same IP that posts the Steve Carroll's Dog posts. The thing with the
x-private usenet service is that it encrypts your posting host, not hide
it altogether. So the posting host of Omar is
"$$$lwkkl$ulnwp.news.x-privat.org", which incidentally is the same as
Steve Carroll's Dog. I don't think anyone doubted that "Steve Carroll's
Dog" was Snit, but no one cared enough so Snit had to create a new sock
puppet; enter Omar.

Snit, busted yet again.

Yup, Snit busted yet again.

<http://csma.sandman.net/pages/AntagonizingThroughOtherMedia>
-----
Sometimes the "time limited" usenet media isn't enough for
the troll and his agenda, and he needs to create material in
another media to antagonize other people, usually a web page.
-----

So, yes, Sandman called his own trolling tactics a form of trolling. Of
course, Sandman tries to backpedal from that and claim his trolling is some
form of exception:

-----
It is important to note that this very list could be called
"antagonizing through other media" since it points to
specific people, mostly Michael, throughout the definitions.
BUt fact is that Michael himself requested this very list of
objective troll criteria, and as such - it doesn't really
constitute trolling.
-----

Please note: I *never* asked Sandman to create a website filled with lies
about me or about anyone else. Sandman lied about that, too.

Sandman is a flat out liar and an admitted troll. If you look at his own
list, he goes out of his way to fit as many of his own criteria as he can:

* Sandman has all sorts of arguments from the past on his troll site
* Sandman creatively snips on his troll site.
* Sandman openly misinterprets on his troll site.
* Sandman clearly lies in his "scoring" on his troll site.

Etc. Can you find *any* of his trolling criteria he does not go out of his
way to fulfill? Of course not. Sandman is a an admitted troll and his site
is a testament to his trolling.

So, of course, you will support him in any way you can... because you are
clearly just trolling.

Now, note how I quote Sandman's own words to prove I am right about him.
You, on the other hand, *never* quote me and support your accusations.
Never. You cannot, because you are a liar.

No, Sandman did not call his posts a troll tactic. Rather, Snit has

Here we go again. Snit once again confirms what these 138 posters have

1- Adam Kesher: "Steve, IIRC Sandman's website has a member area and a

Sandman's website, and yes he's that fucked in the head and starved for

Sandman was talking in general... and not about the info about Steve and his
"dog" you repulsively refer to as "porn".

From a past post:

-----
The issue here is that after Steve absurdly claimed his own post was from
his dog, he tried to obfuscate things by using a sock puppet named, "Steve
Carroll's Dog"... the one Tim Adams claimed was used *before* Steve blamed
his own post under his own name (with his IP listed) as being from his dog.
The Google record, of course, does not agree with Tim... the only posts with
the from line of "Steve Carroll's Dog" came *after* Steve blamed his own
post on his dog.

Of course, showing that Steve Carroll was the one posting with the name
"Steve Carroll's Dog", as opposed to just blaming his own post with his
"standard" name on his dog is not hard to do. I have already posted an
image showing Steve's posting times under the two names:

<http://tmp.gallopinginsanity.com/posting_paws.png>

Tim Adams' claimed that, to him, that was "porn"... which creates a very big
"ick factor" trying to figure out why Tim thinks of porn when he thinks of
Steve and his dog.

The game now, just so you know, will be to insist that since an anonymous
Usenet client does not show an IP, that there is no proof that Steve posted
with the sock "Steve Carroll's Dog", and the fact that Steve clearly forged
text and lied about it will be ignored. Or, with Steve, he will blame me...
after all, there is that ancient Usenet video of me frying kittens that
makes his current actions just peachy. The fact Wally and Tim Adams jumped
in to Steve's defense and repeatedly lied will be ignored. No matter how
much evidence that there is that Steve was busted using another sock will be
ignored... because an anonymous account does not show an IP. Never mind
that the posts *do* show the same uncommon Usenet client that Steve often
uses for his socks (Edward Stanfield and others), and never mind that they
contain Steve's trademarked "tells"... the fact an anonymous post does not
show an IP will be trumpeted time and time again to "prove" Steve did not
post as the sock he clearly posted as.

Not like this dance has not been danced before.

And you are still dancing the same dance, Tim. You are a pervert.

Er, no. Sandman made the point that some ISP's rather than show the IP
address directly, create a unique hash. Many free Usenet servers do
this, to cut down on nymshifting.

But that's not all. The most solid proof is that Omar is posting from
the same IP that posts the Steve Carroll's Dog posts. The thing with the
x-private usenet service is that it encrypts your posting host, not hide
it altogether. So the posting host of Omar is
"$$$lwkkl$ulnwp.news.x-privat.org", which incidentally is the same as
Steve Carroll's Dog. I don't think anyone doubted that "Steve Carroll's
Dog" was Snit, but no one cared enough so Snit had to create a new sock
puppet; enter Omar.

Rather, Snit clearly forged the text as "Steve Carroll's Dog" and got
caught doing it.

No one lied except for Snit.

No, instead Snit was busted, LOL.

Yup, whine, whine, whine.

If it is called the "Snit Circus on Pathological Lies", yes, Snit dances
the same dance for the past 7 years.

Typically Snit, adding an ad hominem insult, how unoriginal, so Snit.

You just snip and run.

The fact is, Sandman describes his own actions as trolling. He is an
admitted troll. And you describe info about Steve and his "dog" as
"porn'... which makes you an admitted pervert.

There is no debate over this - just your begging for attention.

So Steve Carroll also posted as Omar. Ok. And Sandman lied and accused me.

Great - you can quote others lying about me. So what?
