----------- Consumer Advisory ------------

[not all links work anymore, but most do]

Dr A. N. Feliciano (Filipino, born 1929,
chain-smoker, daily drinker of a bottle of
wine) was very active on this newsgroup.
You can still find a link to his website at
the Prostatitis Foundation site, despite
numerous impassioned protests by many men.
Although claiming to be almost 'retired', the
wealthy surgeon still runs a very busy clinic
in Makati, Manila. This clinic thrived after
his 'Manila Protocol' became the treatment
du jour (a fad) on the Internet. Finally,
word got out that people were not being
cured by his methods, he had to return to
this forum to recruit more suckers
(sorry, patients). Here is a typical Feliciano
come-to-my-clinic 'infomercial':
http://groups.google.com/groups?ic=1&selm=an_406584964

His technique for recruiting patients was sly
and polished. He claimed he was only posting
his ideas in this forum so that readers can
take them to their urologists and convince
them to implement his outdated protocol.
He knew full well that 99.999% of uros will
not follow instructions from some
scientifically unpublished non-urologist's
Pacific Island website, brought in by wide-
eyed, desperate patients. He knew that
this would lead patients to think of him as the
last resort, as many have done, eventually
travelling to his "clinic" in a futile search for
a cure. This amounted to nothing less than a
heartless, albeit clever, scam.

His son, Dr A. E. Feliciano, who was trained
by his father and follows similar treatment
methods, runs a clinic in Ermita, Manila.
This clinic was "stolen" (Dr ANF's word)
from his father. Dr AEF is a dim bulb by all
accounts, and failed his MD exams three
times before scraping by on the fourth
attempt. He has tried to murder his father,
Dr ANF, using assassins, according to his
father:
http://groups.google.com/groups?ic=1&selm=an_214762379

Dr AEF & Dr ANF have had several skirmishes in
the Philippine courts, and their deep mutual
antipathy has overflowed into this
newsgroup on several occasions.

If you are considering travelling to Manila
for treatment, I strongly advise you to
reconsider. There are many reasons not to
go. Here are a few ...

Dr ANF's claim of 95% cure rate (yes, he DID say that!):
http://groups.google.com/groups?ic=1&selm=an_289793295

Of course, a "cure" in Dr ANF's view is not
what you might think. Here are his exact
words: "The test of cure is also based on
lab. tests and not on disappearance of
symptoms." So when *his* lab decides you
are cured, then you're cured. Your actual
pain is still there, but that is not relevant.

Dr AEF claimed a 100% cure rate, and was
forced to recant after the many men who
went to see him came back and posted their
sad stories.

Most seriously, Dr ANF's posts contain
mistakes in medicine. There are many, but
a couple I was personally able to highlight
can be found here:

http://groups.google.com/groups?ic=1&selm=an_468685629
http://groups.google.com/groups?ic=1&selm=an_484768841

Other mistakes he has made:

"Nystatin is only applied locally, not orally" [not true]
"WBCs in EPS invariably mean infection" [not true]
"60-80% of men have chronic prostatitis" [not true]
"DIRECT rectal examination or DRE" [should be DIGITAL]
"Radical prostatectomy does not usually include the
seminal vesicles, and the recurrence of "CP" symptoms
may be due to infection of the seminal vesicles." [The
seminal vesicles are always removed as part of a radical
prostatectomy for cancer.]

Dr ANF has forged postings to this
newsgroup, pretending to be his son in
order to stir up hatred and controversy (this
is absolutely true). Would you trust such a
man with your health? Here's the whole episode:
The Original forged message from Dr ANF:
http://groups.google.com/groups?ic=1&selm=an_436614904
Dave Trissel, the man running the Prostatitis
Mailing List, blows the whistle on Dr ANF:
http://groups.google.com/groups?ic=1&selm=an_437371500

Dr ANF, who is deeply intolerant of criticism
and hates to be challenged, has had
outbursts of temper on this newsgroup,
saying a critic should be "shut up in a
psychiatric ward and his mouth should be
gag". This is the guy you want massaging
your prostate?

Dr ANF will stoop to any depths in
argument, including calling an innocent
fellow prostatitis sufferer a "child
pornographer" (with absolutely no
evidence) because he once disagreed with
him. He has called his own son a thief, liar
and fool in this forum. Do apples fall far
from the tree? And this is the guy you want
to have treating you?

Dr ANF has said that he does not see pain
as a frequent symptom of chronic prostatitis
amongst the Filipinos whom he treats in
Manila. Their main symptoms are frequency
and impotence, for which he claims a high
cure rate. However, most Westerners have
PAIN as a major, early symptom, not a late
manifestation as Dr ANF sees it. It is
important to understand that his usual
patients are not in pain. These are the
people he "cures". Are you in pain? If so,
remember that Dr ANF has said "I myself do
not have a definite answer for this pain."

Dr ANF has had no successes with North
American patients, a fact he likes to hide.
He treated at least 8 we know of by his own
admission, men who found him via the
Internet, and men who never reported a
cure to this forum even though he claims to
have "cured" six of them. The other two
were sent packing in a case of "get cured or
get stuffed":

"I refused to continue treating 2 of these
patients because they showed no respect for me ...
These are the patients who called me a nut."

The Feliciano technique for brushing you off at
the end of the protocol, when you are still unwell,
is to say:

1) Dr AE Feliciano's spiel:
"You must wait 4 months to get better" (the
notorious "4-month rule"). He knows
that after 4 months back in your home
country, you'll have lost the impetus and
outrage required to start legal action.

2) Dr AN Feliciano's spiel:
"The pain is residual, and you have to learn
to put up with it. I have removed the
infection." (according to his lab's results).
Now that you have had the whole disease
"explained to you", you should find it easier
to bear to pain. He subjects you to a
long slide show so that you "understand"
why you are sick and can live with the pain
when you leave. In other words, you arrived
with pain and see yourself as sick, but
although you are still experiencing the same
pain when you leave, you will see yourself as
"well".

So they both have pretty slick methods to
deflect your complaints at the end of treatment.

Dr ANF still suffers from chronic prostatitis, and
has other doctors use their fingers to massage his
prostate.

Eventually, I'm glad to say, he was chased off this
newsgroup by me and a few helpers.

Note on Dr Polachek / Polacheck:
--------------------------------

Polachek, another non-urologist, is an
acolyte of the AEF/ANF methodology. When
he gets stumped (as usually happens
according to the accounts posted to this
newsgroup), he contacts Dr AEF for advice.

The handful of men who visited Polacheck
in Tucson, some staying there for
considerable periods of time and at huge
expense, have all reported a failure of
treatment. Their stories can be found in the
archives of this newsgroup. Caveat emptor
(buyer beware).

See:
http://groups.google.com/groups?ic=1&selm=an_443366743

http://groups.google.com/groups?ic=1&selm=an_393412566
http://groups.google.com/groups?ic=1&selm=an_291866660

Polacheck's method of deflecting
complaints is to float the suggestion that
you may have other, undiscovered bugs in
your gland. Looks like you need to go back
for more treatment. Gotcha!

Note on Dr Kaploun:
------------------

Dr. Ilya Kaploun of the Male Health Centre,
Toronto...

Dr Kaploun is an acolyte and possibly employee of
of Dr A N Feliciano. Whenever ANF
(frequently) goes to Toronto "to see his
family" as he claims, he is actually going to
visit with Kaploun, who seemingly runs his Toronto
branch office for him. Rather similar setup
to the one AEF has with Polacheck. See:
