The nominees for alt.surfing's Kook of the Year
(ASKOTY) are:

__ Alvin Donovan
__ Craig Kemnitz
__ Driftcoast / Dimly Lit / Eric Burch
__ Gleshna
__ FlekTonez
__ spockie
__ Tim Maddux

Vote now by following-up to this post. The vote
will be conducted in "instant-runoff" fashion.
You can vote for up to 3 candidates. Rank your
choices from 1 to 3, with 1 being your first choice
for ASKOTY, and 3 being your third. Voting will
continue until I don't see any more follow-ups
to this thread at my server or at Google. Only
follow-ups count as votes, no emails. No write-ins --
nominations are closed. If you post a bad ballot,
I'll follow-up and let you know you screwed it up
and you'll have a chance to fix it. The first good
ballot from every voter will be the one accepted.
No voting by multiple profiles. Kira Riley-Fubuki,
however, may vote. Her baby and/or dead husband
may not.

You may use whatever criteria you like to vote
for a candidate. It's not required, but I suggest
you concentrate on kook activity in 2002. Below
are the reasons each candidate was nominated. Thanks
to everyone who helped dig this stuff up.

Driftcoast / Dimly Lit / Eric Burch

As I stated in the first post of this thread,
whatever you initially stated will be ignored.
Also, you have to vote 1, 2, and 3, all in 1 post.
See my vote, johnh's vote, and blakestah's vote
for how to do it right.

Also, someone tried to email me. I deleted it.
You have to POST in the group, it's the only way
we can keep me from rigging the numbers. If you
must email me, tell you what. Post a GPG public
key in the group and then email me your signed vote.
Your vote will eventually be made public, though,
so you might as well post it.

1, 2 & 3 Spockie gets my vote. The only true kook of the lot

Alvin Donovan has been around too long and if I am not mistaken got the
ASKOTY runner up the year the shark guy won.

Craig Kemnitz, lake surfer, I would not surf those conditions, so does that
make him more a surfer than me???? No, but a kook not by those conditions.

Driftcoast / Dimly Lit / Eric Burch Im not so sure that this isn't Sandy.

Gleshna is a local revered fixture. So much so that a search party flushed
him back after a very fun panty raid.

FlekTonez. Annoying, yes. Any interesting stories of surf, not in recent
memory. Came on like JB, strong smelling. Worth an encounter. A kook, has to
be verified by observing him surf. May be another episode of Texan mouth
surf.

Tim Maddux. Come on, Tim???

First off I'm eliminating spockie because I believe he is a profile of a certain PNW boozehound.

Flek is pathetic but most of his spew was OT so I'm eliminating him.

The whole Craig/Gleshna drama bordered on psychotic so I don't feel if falls into the kook
category.

So, in reverse order:

#3. Alvin- The daily reports of triple overhead, death-drop, black/white magic were enough but
that fuzzy, skewed shot of a guy standing on the reef as proof of his exploits seals his show
finish.

#2. Drifty- Even with multiple offers from the group for intervention he still can't get out of
his dead-end lifestyle.

#1. Maddoggy- Sorry Tim but C'MON. Moving from SB to the wrong coast and then posting cries of
regret when the surf is up there. Then, failing to show his face in SF when there is solid surf.
Yeah these are meat-space antics but they were legitimate posts on AS.There's still time for
redemption if you can get that job at Scripps. Intentionally going from a legit surfer in
lotusland to a landhugging poser is the definition of kook.

Hey Tim, I resent your opinion that I don't know much about localism.
Don't forget, there is a certain right point wave that is localised.
Case in point, during the November swells, one or more fights occured
between outsiders and locals. I could go on and on about the spot, and
dig up shit from W. Borgeson, my buddy the surf photographer as well
as a couple of personal accounts. Maybe you should be bumped up to
first place for that.

Nobody's asking you who you met in real life, you freakin idiot.

It's about newsgroup kookery. Craig is running around the GL
with a stocking cap on, hiding behind fire hydrants and taking
pictures of surfers license plates... AND making surf related
rube goldberg machines...

He's a sinch!

i should clarify my objections:
your voting system does not allow for write-ins (example of write-in Denny)
below)
or omissions (only wanting to vote for one kook, not three).

Very well. Consider my original post amended.

This is an instant runoff election so if nobody
gets all the #1 votes, we eliminate the low
vote getters and anyone who voted for them #1
now votes for their #2. And so on. Hopefully
as a result we'll only have to do this once.

It's not that hard! Just ask yourself who you'd
vote for if you eliminated your #1 choice. And
that's your #2. Then eliminate that person. That's
your #3. easy.

Slow week at Whoooee, Tim?

Lets do a leetle analysis of this voting system here - what are we talking
about, numerical totals in reverse order: 3 points as a first choice, 2 as a
second choice and 1 as a third choice with whoever gets the most points as
ASKOTY and so on? I mean, we ain't talking Florida rules, are we?

__ Alvin Donovan - a strong contender.Though I think Planet Alvin has a
population of one, soooo.......
__ Craig Kemnitz - To paraphrase Ferg; "do not try to drink with this man.
You will only get hurt...a lot."
__ Driftcoast / Dimly Lit / Eric Burch - Ol' Drifty....tattoo ink may have
some psychotropic properties we were previously unaware of.
__ Gleshna - ASKOTY? Naaah. This is more like an Irving Thalberg Lifetime
Achievement Award, not just one year.
__ FlekTonez - Ya know, he's a nice guy. Psychotic, true, but a nice guy
deep down inside someplace.
__ spockie - is he live or is he Memorex. Nobody could be real and fail to
take the hints delivered with such little subtlty.
__ Tim Maddux - moving from a place where sentences start and end with
'duuude', as in "Duuude, did you see my heavy ayyeeerrrr, duuude??" is not
necessarily a sign of kookness.More like he's been surrounded by those who
are, shall I say, dimly lit? The boy needed a little intellectual
stimulation. His psychoses are in other directions. We need not go into
those here. Come the spring, Tim is gonna be dialed in. Ne probleme
pas......

So -

#1 - with a bullet - Drifty. Fabricating a large wave encounter complete
with crippling injury; that's ASKOTY stylin'.
#2 - Kemnitz. I keep thinking of Antarctica and Scott when I think of
Kemnitz of the North. "I'm just stepping out for a while..."
#3 - Tim. Hey, he's new here in town, you gotta let him know he's
appreciated. This may not be the best way to go about it, but it was
available.

Ok, Tim, fire up the VAX and tabulate these puppies.

Eh, Rico, waddaya think - AS New Year's Party??? Will bring rum, Magic Hat
Number Nine, oven-fried chicken and Uncle Doc's Swedish Holiday Brot copied
from my Swedish stepmother's original recipe. Drag Tim and Bettye out of
Whooeee for a bit, no? Might even get Roca down out of the frozen North.

Doc..... looking forward to Hogmanay - hey, I'm Scotch, we go for the pagan
rituals ...........

We're talking about "instant runoff." Google for it
or read my other explanation. If we don't get a
majority from the #1 votes, the candidate with the
fewest of them is thrown out and those who voted
for him #1 then vote for their #2. A runoff. And
so on again with the #3 votes as necessary. Until
we have a majority winner.

When we get this voting thing down, we should go
for some ASKOAT (alt.surfing kook of all time) awards.
But not now, eh? I got your votes. I also got

Too complex, man. Simple numerical sums are not only easier, but more fun to
plot. I _am_ expecting a distribution chart of some sort.

Hmmm..... considering that Bawb has been dead at least once, I think a
lifetime award is proper. And it seems to me that 'all time' is a little
pretentious, ya know?

Still think the write-in thang was a good idea. No offense, Tim, but that

Nominees stopped coming in. Anyhow the voting
numbers are matching up with the first few people
to be nominated and the late additions are going
to be dropped in the first runoff. Same would happen
to the write-ins. Less work for me this way, and
I'm wearing the velvet glove on this one.

Vote early, vote often. This is my first profile weighing in.

_X_ Alvin Donovan - I killfiled the fake a long time ago
because life is too short

_X_ Craig Kemnitz - I admire the guy too much; he'd have the
biggest stones in this group if they hadn't frozen off a few
years ago; too bad surfing in slushies doesn't thicken your skin

_3_ Driftcoast / Dimly Lit / Eric Burch - he's way too
entertaining to be #1, but his whining about his life, and his
pathetic surf posts count for something; since Tim left the door
open for considering pre-2002 activities, I'd have to add points
for the TAT; besides, the TAT is still here in 002, right?

_2_ Gleshna - all kook, all the time; if it weren't for jimmy m
- our resident redneck crybaby - Bawb would have reached the
pinnacle. I DO support a lifetime achievement award for him - he
was a contender before there was an ASKOTY

_1_ FlekTonez - who can out-kook Flek on a day-in, day-out
basis? his off-group behavior was much more outrageous in years
past, but when he confuses A.S. with the National Review letters
to the Editor, well, he's the KOOK, hands-down.

_X_ spockie - Who? I can't even find him in my killfile

_X_ Tim Maddux - turn Blake inside out and you have Maddux;
these guys are the real meal deal; plus, any one who has a VAX
to play with earns my respect (I'm shopping e-Bay as we speak to
get one). No KOOK, he.

Do I _have_ to? OK, here they are. Sorry, Tim. If you don't like this
ballot, tough. I'm not doing it again.

1 - Flek - for the Alex incident alone.
3 - Tim - sorry, Tim, someone had to be last.
2- all the rest, except spockie. His kook is so lame, it's cute.
Cute, but not award worthy.

I'd have been good at it, though I was lousy in my own campaign
a couple years back.

This was a tough year, Eric, the candidates were all top notch and
had full czmpaign coffers. Your shoestring campaign was brilliant
though, posting that report to the teeny bopper chat room was
a brilliant stroke - I never would have thought of it.

Your ramblinhg Nixonian speech about the forces arrayed against
you was a stroke of genius. I honestly couldn't have scripted this
split personality any better, the contrast between belligerent combatant
against the AS old timers and real surfers vs the self pitying confessions.

I suspect we at AS are not accustomed to the subtley, we're chasing
the spectacular sound bites that the top candidates have offered this
year.

I don't get it. I was thinking that maybe you needed some sort of slogan
to pull you over the top, but none of the candidates have as good a slogan
as 'Don't pull a Driftcoast'....

If you want to seal the lifetime achievement award, after the election, do a
rambling whining concession speech where you rag on all of us, then leave
for a while claiming 'you won't have Rat to kick around any more'

then make a comeback. Brilliant.

First the runners up:

I agree that spockie is an obvious trollbot. And a green one at that.
But entertaining, in a stupid and obvious kind of way. Disqualified.

And as half of the Craig and Bob G show, Bob G deserves some
recognition. He may be a mad basketcase and his conduct is
consistently reprehensible, but that's not quite the same thing as
being a kook. Somehow his performance seemed less endearing and
original than Craig's. With the right meds and some dedication he
could take it all next year. Thanks for playing- Craig couldn't have
done it without you.

Alvin came on like a kook from the get-go and his black-white magic
stuff was a trip (to put it mildly). If he were talking about my home
breaks, I'd have found his disingenuous comments about large surf from
unlikely directions to be more outrageous. But the competition was
especially keen this year and only one gets to be Ueberkook. A kook to
be sure, but not ASKOTY. Dig deeper next year, man. You've got real
champion kook potential.

Tim Mad Dog? For making a strategic and temporary career move (as an
oceanographer no less!) to a surfless beach? At least he's on a beach.
Come on, get real. Dead last in the kook competition.

And now, the winners:

ASKOTY #3.
I personally like Dimly Lit, though we've never met. His writing (at
times) entertains and even suggests a thoughtful mind. But he's on a
serious kook-binge this year. Especially getting trolled and flamed by
his own profiles and pretending to be Surff (I missed that one at the
time). Frickin' hilarious. Good work, sirrah.

ASKOTY #2.
Flek's consistent and heartfelt off-topic pinhead rants make him a
strong contender in the classic Pete Amschel vein of kookasian. I
disagree with his every word and I'll fight to defend his right to
spew it. Is this a great country or what?

ASKOTY #1.
Craig Kemnitz: Oh how the mighty have fallen. Once a reasonably
credible presence whom I have lauded at times for finding it within
himself to get seriously and honestly stoked about Great Lakes surf.
But the Craig and Bob G show took kookiness to new highs (lows?). And
it went on and *on* and ON... For a while I thought that anyone Fly
was riding so relentlessly (and pettily- for trying to succeed where
he has failed) must be on the right track. But running police checks
on guys and posting blather about it? Time to rethink your act and
get back up. You're letting the ***holes get you down. Even good guys
can have really kooky seasons. This year, Craig's on fire.

Consider the origins of the tradition -
unheated stone huts with thatched roofs,
a wet, cold North Sea climate ( kinda like coastal Maine )
and last but not least - knowing what is in haggis and eating it anyways.

Not surprising, then, that they learned to make plain old beer into

although there is a definite down-trend in ALL female posting on this forum.
The fact that this comp's been going on for years lends a certain cachet,
too.

I spend a fair amount of time here "relationship building," which is an
activity typically associated with the female sex, and I don't spend very
much time responding to most of the ASKOTY material. I don't get picked on
very often, thank goodness, but I appreciate the ability to trade verbal
insults.

As for pagan rituals, this hardly qualifies. You should see what my sister
does to her house for Halloween...

Just a minor point. Use of the past tense in the matter is a mistake.

I too, thought it was a bit quick. Remember Tim, not everyone checks the
newsgroup every day.

Nowadays in my office, people expect responses to email within hours, and
that is just not reasonable.

Suggest you give it more time.

LOL. This is painful to watch. Foon tries to pull
rank on a 70 y/o black lady from the GL and he
gets his ass handed to him.

Foon, give it up. You had a short short career
on AS but it's time to face the music. Your stories
are old hat. You can't operate a digital camera much
less edit video and you live thousands of miles from
the beach. Your're done, bitch.

Give Foon a break for christ sake!

I can't see any reason for you to keep on stepping on Foon's head,
especially if you consider he's deep in the grave already. I like Foon
stories, he's among the best writers in AS and he has shown a gift to put
his stoke into words.

I like your vidsvery much, your flaming is certainly unequalled (making me
laughing out loud more than once), but sometimes you sound like you can't
stop even when you *know* it hurts. Heck I presume it all comes together as
a package.

Don't understand. As I previously mentionned, excuse me for being a bit
slow.

What kind of "issues"?

You're right, just that I can't be as precise in english as I am in french,
therefore I sometimes have to make compromises when alternatives don't come
for an expression just a little tad away from thoughts.

Let's go with that.

Do you share Soup-of-fly point of view then? You think Foon is done to the
bone?

Why can't you come to gleshna's rescue when he really needs it?

Your attitude strikes me as elitist and smacks of favoritism.

I'd say you do quite well. I fact, you have a better grasp of English
than many of the native speakers do, here.
