Subject: School visitor
School visitor
--------------

I was managing a school visitor yesterday.

It proves kids are smarter than school administrators
at drawing up IT decisions.

My job for the day was to show how my working
day is spent.

So first step, I power up Linux PC
and start describing the translucent 3D cube with
16 sides.

He said my school's appil can't do that.
My home windopws PC can't do that.

Within minutes he was hooked on rotating translucent
Ubuntu desktop and took down all details to
download and try to get it working at home.

So then I go and show firefox and seamonkey
composer that allows all documentation to be
edited and held in web format. And then I went on to
describe how I do all that with free software.
I take pictures, edit it with gimp, and then link them with text.
He casually mentioned IE is so slow by comparison
to firefox. Sheesh how do these kids know that???

And then I showed how I get access to 80,000 files
by linking all the important documents in using
seamonkey composer. And then I showed him how
using nautilus you can do the same thing but how
difficult it was. And then he mentioned his teacher
used a similar file manager to find files and
he can never find his files. Using firefox, seamonkey composer
to link pictures, diagrams and words together was much
better than using file managers, and they should all
switch to do it that way, sez the kid.
Sheesh! Kids what do they know about running IT departments?

And then typical office went ballistic with two events.
Lots of paperwork had to be found instantly and there
I was doing it. But since one of the old documents was not
tied together into the document system, I had to search
with nautilus and eventually found it and then after
it was all sorted, the kid asks, so am I going to link
that document into the HTML page for that project so I can find it again?
Doh! What what what?
OK ok! I did as the kid told me to do!
Its gets ridiculous when kids tell me what to do!!

Then I showed the kid some Gambas and how create buttons
and get the software to speak using the espeak command built
into Ubuntu. Then I put another button so that I can edit
the file that speech is made from.
So every time I press the button, the kid could hear
what was typed into the system.
And then I told him thats how you manage your projects
with verbose lists. Before long he was dictating what
should be on his list now.
Sheesh! Copyright, (TM), (R), that was MY program.
I wrote it for ME! What do these kids know of IT
to use my programs to write their project lists?

And then we back in lab and I to log into my
main computer upstairs to look at the html website
and so I used ssh -X to log in and told him that I
was running in the machine upstairs and he could
see the updates I had done. And then
the kid says none of his computers can do that.
I said they can do it, but when they find money
to pay for the software.
Linux is free and thats why I can do it.

So schools that have limited amounts of money
have to make do without a lot of software because
they can't pay for it and thus under educate kids so that
big software companies can walk off with their booty.

Compare that with schools that embrace freedom software
who can have a lot more software that kids can use to produce
better educated and IT experienced children.

Isn't Firefox faster on Windows than on Linux?

And once you have worked with Photoshop, Gimp simply is not impressive.

You have kids telling you how to do your job?  Lovely.

What age were these kids?  And why didn't you actually do anything with them
other than have them stare at your screen?  Your story is fishy.

A nice story, very concisely written with some light humor.

Usually, 7, you are the R. Buckminster Fuller of COLA.

Today, you have aspirations to be the Ernest Hemingway of COLA!

I was at the gym one day when this kid and his mom walked by.
The kid saw my Linux Journal tee-shirt and did a little fist
pump and said "Yeah, Linux!"

Did you tell them you are a lying fraud Joseph Michael?

A poster who calls himself "The President of COLA"
in comp.os.linux.advocacy has been claiming that he has won
the European Inventor Of The Year award.

His real name is Joseph Michael and he goes by the moniker "7".

Here is a link to him making the claim:

This claim is fully supported without challenge by the group's
Linux supporters including but not limited to:

Chris Ahlstrom
Gregory Shearman
Roy Schestowitz.
chrisv
Peter Kohlmann
Goblin
and several others.

I am suggesting that each person who reads this message contact the
EPO which is the organization that presents the award and ask them
about Mr. Joseph Michael's claims.

Here is their website.

Surely the President of comp.os.linux.advocacy should
have no problem with people verifying the claims he has
been making for years.

How about it Chrissy Ahlstrom, will you be the first to

Or how about you Goblin?
You try to portray yourself as a genteel person.

Asstroturfer offerings
----------------------

I've just read the contents of the fbo.gov solicitation RTB220610

The US government wants asstroturfers and with it sophisticated
asstroturfing technology to drown out democratic free speech,
and then hide from those whom it seeks to victimize.

It was point no.3 that caught my eye:
0003- Static IP Address Management

What that means is the same as what I've been saying for a while about
doofi, flatcake and clog are true.

They are not individuals but a whole asstroturfing team
behind each sock puppet.

There isn't enough memory between the sock operators to know
or remember what had been said earlier so you know the
conversations are being typed out by multiple individuals
impersonating each other.
It was notable gaffs by the goofy doofy sock that first gave it away.

The asstrotufing teams had already gone into government and offered them
consulting services about what technology and asstroturfing
practices were out there for fbo.gov to decide what they will
purchase in solicitation RTB220610.

Its gets ridiculous when kids ...

In other words, you have no answer.  Here, see if this helps you:

    -----
As you might have guessed from our domain name, TuxRadar.com,
we're big fans of Linux. But being a fan of Linux doesn't
necessarily make you a Linux fanboy - the kind of person who
blindly ignores anything negative about their passion of
choice as if that somehow made it better.

In fact, we think more Linux users need to admit there are
some places where Linux isn't quite as good as its
competitors. And one place where that's certainly true is in
web browsing. Don't believe us? We did some simple JavaScript
benchmarks of Firefox 3.0 using Windows and Linux to see how
it performed across the platforms - and the results are
    pretty bleak for Linux.

    -----
The end result: Firefox from Mozilla or from Fedora has
almost nil speed difference, and Firefox running on Wine is
    faster than native Firefox

Now, both of those are sorta old... anyone have newer data?

more and more fishy.

You do not react well to having it noted that you were caught lying.

Using firefox, seamonkey composer
to link pictures, diagrams and words together was much
better than using file managers, and they should all
switch to do it that way, sez the kid. ...

The best this "advocate" can do: name call.

Lovely.

Ok, you are boring.

At one stage I was graphing some data with OpenOffice.
And I told the kid I can also do maths and graphs
with xmaxima.
So I open up xmaxima and showed him a formula starting
with simple thing like x+1 = 15, so what is x?
xmaxima outputs the answer x=14. So the kid is impressed.
Then I say 2*x+1=15, and let him calculate x as 7.
Then I show xmaxima result.
And so on and so on and pretty soon he as into x*x,
and sqr(x) and then abstract concepts such as sqr(2),
and then linear algebra x*y = 10, x+y = 5
and he could solve it. He was most surprised when
xmaxima output two answers: x=5,y=2 and x=2,y=5.
Then I went into plot of sine curve and then I went
into saddle points on a 2D curve.

The kid didn't know what hit him in that small space of 15 minutes
with Linux and xmaxima doing the teaching heavy duty maths.
But he did understand it all because he was able to talk
about it instead of just standing there and gawking.
Teaching is all about engaging in interesting ways
instead of cold and abstract lectures.

It just proves that schools and businesses
that have limited amounts of money
have to make do without a lot of software because
they can't pay for it and thus under educate kids
and staff so that big software companies
can walk off with their booty.

Compare that with schools and companies
that embrace freedom software who can then have a lot
more software for training to produce better
educated and IT experienced children/staff.

Oh, BTW I forgot to mention that Snit's been doing this for a long time.
Over the past 8 years:

2004:

9- Bob B.: "This has always been pretty much a free-for-all group, but
since Snit showed up, its become almost impossible to have a decent
discussion about anything. The solution is to NOT REPLY TO SNIT. But for
some reason, some people just can't stop feeding him."  27 Dec 2004

http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.mac.advocacy/msg/3d2f1dff196c...

2005:

69- Liam Slider (cola): "Maybe he's responding to the fact you've been an
annoying little fuckwit lately. You started out with the pretense of
trying to be fair, but lately all there is from you in COLA is trashtalk
about Linux and you acting every bit the troll."  16 Jul 2005

http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.mac.advocacy/msg/ad7d6c42c5e4...

2006 (above)

2007:

85- Mr. Blonde: "Lastly, I can't help but comment on the fact that your
obsession with Sandman has actually grown since you claimed to KF him.
Killfilling someone generally implies you're ignoring that person, yet you
piggyback onto virtually every reply to him here and and check his

2008:

set up my filters to kill all of Snit's posts, plus direct replies to them
(which is how I'm keeping things from now on), nearly 40% of the most
recent 1000 articles in CSMA go out the window. .... In all, something
like 50% of the traffic in this group is now related to Snit insanity.
.... I killfile Edwin because I don't have a patience to have discussions
with someone who deliberately tries to waste my time. But watching *other
people* tie him knots can be entertaining. The Snit-related posts are not
like this. They are endless repetitions of the exact same material and/or
arguments dating back *years* about who said what."  20 Apr 2008

http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.mac.advocacy/msg/9244dd79c682...

2009:

long time now, since 1995 at least. There have always been trolls and
morons, but I've never seen anything quite so disruptive as the Snit
circus. Snit will *never* back down or stop, and neither will most of his
opponents.  A good kill file is your only hope."  20 Aug 2009

http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.mac.advocacy/msg/3161a78667e2...

2010:

guarantee you will respond to this post in under 3 hours. Hell, I'd be
surprised if it takes longer than 30 minutes. If I really wanted to, I
could make this little side topic go on forever, because you are a
