Hi, Margaret, hi, John,

Thanks, you are both incredible!  May I add to the list I made to Margaret yet another son of Tomé Raposo and Sebastiana da Costa, just pointed out by John.  Allow me to quote:

"marr...@cs.com Jan 12 04:42PM -0500
There is also their son Domingos Raposo born in S. José, who married
Antónia Carvalho, also of S. José along with her parents, Domingos Dias and Maria
Carvalho, on 27 April 1730 in S. José.
John Miranda Raposo"
By the way, have you noticed Revista Michaelense, at Google Books?  There are lots of genealogical information there, but only a few lines on each name can be seen on-line.

Thank you  both, again and again,
Marcos.

    Hi Margaret,
My husband and I have finished the baptisms from Santa Barbara, Santa Maria
    and I am now
on to the marriages. Now I need a few new Portuguese words. What words will
    tip me off as
to if the nubentes were related.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Tish,

    This is for blood relations:

1st, 2nd and 3rd degree of consanguinity: "*primeiro, segundo e terceiro
degrau de consanguinidade de que obtiveram dispensa por sentença
    apostolica*".

Also, watch for; 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree of licit affinity. It usually
    reads like this;

"*alem do primeiro, segundo e terceiro grau de afinidade licita, de que
    obtiveram dispensa por sentença apostolica*".

An exammple of "licit" would be when in-laws remarry each other after their
respective husband/wife pass away, and or any other similar "legal"
    relationship.

    Margaret,

Here is what I know about the sons of *Tomé Raposo* (who died before 1734)
and *Sebastiana da Costa. * In the marriage record of their son António it
says that Tomé and Sebastiana were from Arrifes:

*Antonio Raposo* married Vitoria Cordeiro, daughter of Bartolomeu Afonso
Sardinha and Teresa Ferreira in Relva, 1721. Since men used to first marry
at 25, let's take 1696 as his probable year of birth. Vitoria died
and Antonio married Maria de São José, who was the daughter of Manuel de
Teves, of S. Antonio Além Capelas, and Maria de Souza, of S. José - Ponta
Delgada, where the marriage took place in 1744.

*Pedro Raposo, *christened in Patriarch S. José, married Antonia de Souza,
christened in S. Sebastião, Ponta Delgada, daughter of André de Souza and
Luzia de Almeida, in S. Sebastião, Ponta Delgada, 1734. Supposing Pedro to
be 25 then, he should have been born around 1709.

*Gonçalo Raposo*, christened in S. José, Ponta Delgada, married Maria
Pereira, of Bretanha, daughter of José Carvalho and Maria Pereira, in S.
Antonio Além Capelas in 1735. It's reasonable to suppose he was born by
    1710.

*Silvestre Raposo*, christened in S. José, Ponta Delgada, married Joana
Botelho, daughter of Amaro Botelho and Francisca Pacheco in S. Antonio Além
Capelas 1n 1739. Let's assume Silvestre was born in 1714. After her death,
he married Bárbara Medeiros, christened in S. Antonio Além Capelas ,
daughter of Domingos de Souza and Teresa da Costa, in 1743, in that same
    parish.

Except for my gggggfather Pedro, all the above information is the result of
a research by John Miranda Raposo.

Hope you will come across something. If you Raposos are from Arrifes, as
mine, there should be a connection somehow.

    Thank you, so much,
    Marcos.
P.S. - I've checked the Almanak Laemmert of Rio de Janeiro from 1880 to 1889
in quest for your José Pimentel, who arived here in 1880. Unfortunately, he
was not be found. That doesn't mean he wasn't here, it only means he did
not hold a position of visibility yet.

    Marcos,
I will include your list with my "Rapozo" research. If *Tomé Rapozo *x
Maria de Souza were having children in S. Jose, it is an indication that
they were living there also. As I mentioned earlier I don't have files that
far back yet however I have the films available to me dating
    from1702-1879-Marriages-SJ, and 1641-1823-Obits.

re your PS, ie Pimentel, thank you!

We went to Duarte's several years ago and had the Artichoke soup for lunch.
Great place. There is also a Portuguese hall on the main street there also.
At nearby Pidgon point there is an old light light house. If I'm not
mistaken.there was also a shore whaling station on the coast nearby at one
time. The area is definitely worth a days outing.

An interesting tidbit about Duarte's for you genealogists...

Last time I was at Duarte's (in August, 2009) there were several pictures on
the wall--sort of behind the entry door to the restaurant (not the bar). One
was a "panororama" style--very long, don't know the proper term. It was a
picture of some of the menfolk of the town. They were labeled with names! I
found my grandmother's first cousin's husband who also happens to be buried
in the cemetery there. I had never seen a picture of him. There were many
Azoreans in the area at that time.

If you are visiting Pescadero and the weather is dry, do visit St. Anthony's
cemetery on Stage Rd north of town.
