Margaret,

Here is what I know about the sons of Tomé Raposo (who died before 1734) and Sebastiana da Costa.   In the marriage record of their son António it says that Tomé and Sebastiana were from Arrifes:

Antonio Raposo married Vitoria Cordeiro, daughter of Bartolomeu Afonso Sardinha and Teresa Ferreira in Relva, 1721.  Since men used to first marry at 25, let's take 1696 as his probable year of birth.  Vitoria died and Antonio married Maria de São José, who was the daughter of Manuel de Teves, of S. Antonio Além Capelas, and Maria de Souza, of S. José - Ponta Delgada, where the marriage took place in 1744.

Pedro Raposo, christened in Patriarch S. José, married Antonia de Souza, christened in S. Sebastião, Ponta Delgada, daughter of André de Souza and Luzia de Almeida, in S. Sebastião, Ponta Delgada, 1734.  Supposing Pedro to be 25 then, he should have been born around 1709.

Gonçalo Raposo, christened in S. José, Ponta Delgada, married Maria Pereira, of Bretanha, daughter of José Carvalho and Maria Pereira, in S. Antonio Além Capelas in 1735.  It's reasonable to suppose he was born by 1710.

Silvestre Raposo, christened in S. José, Ponta Delgada, married Joana Botelho, daughter of Amaro Botelho and Francisca Pacheco in S. Antonio Além Capelas 1n 1739.  Let's assume Silvestre was born in 1714.  After her death, he married Bárbara Medeiros, christened in S. Antonio Além Capelas , daughter of Domingos de Souza and Teresa da Costa, in 1743, in that same parish.

Except for my gggggfather Pedro, all the above information is the result of a research by John Miranda Raposo.

Hope you will come across something.  If you Raposos are from Arrifes, as mine, there should be a connection somehow.

Thank you, so much,
Marcos.
P.S. - I've checked the Almanak Laemmert of Rio de Janeiro from 1880 to 1889 in quest for your José Pimentel, who arived here in 1880.  Unfortunately, he was not be found.  That doesn't mean he wasn't here, it only means he did not hold a position of visibility yet.

I received a private email from a friend of a friend asking where was
Negrito on Faial. Since I'm not a Faial researcher, I could only guess that
it's perhaps some kind of neighborhood. Anyone know where this placed is
    located?

Hi Cheri, the Negrito place I'm aware is not in Faial but, in Terceira
island. It is is located between S. Bartolomeu and S. Mateus.

    Gayle,

Are your Machado's from the Island of Pico?  I have relatives in Fresno, Riverdale, Laton, and San Luis Obispo.  Just curious.  Thank you, Vivian (Silva) Christy

    Al,

We’ve spoken before- shortly after I moved to Fresno. But, its been many years. I’ve met both John and Fred Machado, although they probably don’t remember it (it was at the Portuguese Hall in Easton and they were busy serving) but I’m not related. When I get home tonight I’ll look to see if I still have some records from when we last communicated. Unfortunately, today is the first day back for the new semester. I’m at work and in between meetings at the moment. I pray I get home before 8 tonight (which happened last semester). If not, then I’ll try to look this weekend. Seems to me there was a connection.

Gotta go. Sorry so short a note,

    Gayle

    Hi, Margaret,

May I bother you a little more on our probable connection at Arrifes?

I thought my Raposos were all from Ponta Delgada, but John Miranda Raposo
kindly told me that they were in fact from Arrifes. His sources indicate
that my gggggggrandfather Tomé Raposo (married to Sebastiana da Costa), who
died before Dec 1735, was from Arrifes and had the following sons, besides
my ggggggrandfather Pedro: Antonio (married to Vitoria Cordeiro and then to
Maria de São José), Gonçalo (married to Maria Pereira), Silvestre (married
to Joana Botelho) and Domingos (married to Antonia Carvalho).

Pedro was christened in freguesia of the Patriarch São José, Ponta Delgada,
as did his brothers Gonçalo and Silvestre, but the family seems to have
later moved to the freguesia of S. Sebastião, in Ponta Delgada.

Tomé Raposo and Sebastiana da Costa of Arrifes are my brickwalls,
unsurmountable so far. You know, after 200 years oblivion water produces a
kind hang-over that compels people to seek their forgotten relatives. Can
    you help?

    Thanks a lot,
    Marcos.

Marcos, it's no trouble at all. Although I'm still searching early 1800's
in S.Jose's records I also will be going through S.Sebastiao's films later.
I already have collected many Raposo's from SJ. I will add your names to my
search and hopefully will find Tome. Do you have any idea of when his
    children were born or married?

Marcos,
I will include your list with my "Rapozo" research.  If Tomé Rapozo x Maria de Souza were having children in S. Jose, it is an indication that they were living there also. As I mentioned earlier I don't have files that far back yet however I have the films available to me dating from1702-1879-Marriages-SJ, and 1641-1823-Obits.

re your PS, ie Pimentel, thank you!

Marcos, hi.

Just to give you an update on the Raposo research results which now will turn in another direction.  I did find my "Antonio Raposo de Arruda" but he is not from Arrifes.  His birth place was MOSTEIROS. However, I will have to continue researching Sao Jose-PD for it has mushroomed on my dad's branch to a long list of new family names; Miranda, da Rocha, de Mello, de Sousa, Sam Jose etc.

I will continue to be on the lookout for Tome Raposo and the others.

Take care,

Margaret Vicente.
