Voice of America operator plans "sunset" for shortwave radio broadcasts

The sun is setting on Voice of America's shortwave radio service,
heard worldwide in dozens of languages for 70 years.

A strategic technology plan prepared by the Broadcasting Board of
Governors (BBG), the federal agency responsible for Voice of America,
Alhurra, Radio Free Asia and other international stations, concludes
that it should end many shortwave broadcasts in favor of "more
effective" media such as internet radio.

I can't believe they use this excuse to close down so many shortwave
services. There are three primary reasons why internet streaming radio
cannot replace shortwave services:

1) Target areas for shortwave services do not have access to internet.

2) Even if they DO have internet access, it's severely restricted by
governments.

3) The average person that cares at all to listen to them in the free,
developed world usually does so just because they CAN, without having to pay
for the privilege, or just for the excitement of listening to something
coming from half a world away without wires.

and, just for fun, this additional tidbit:

You STILL can't take streaming radio with you reliably.

Even if this were true, as it is always said, "follow the money trail."
Alleged "organizations" and governmental departments are now constantly
trying to steer public thought in the direction they want it to go. The
reality is that there are
new short wave stations sprouting up all the time. However, there are
special interest groups that deeply want to convince the brain-dead to
abandon that which is already paid for to buy the newest gadgets. The simple
fact is that worldwide there are millions of short wave listeners who are
under 25, over 25 and it remains viable and useful. Painting the whole world
by what
some industrialized, capitalistic countries are doing is absurd. The world
is a big place but our arrogance often convinces us that we're the only ones
on the righteous path.

To believe anything else is just "drinking the Kool Aid" and convincing
yourself that the only alternative is to rush to Best Buy and buy the newest
thing that will enable the government to easily monitor what you're
listening to and censor that as well is what they want.

No, naysayers...short wave radio will be around for a long time. There are
too many honest governments and non-governmental entities that do not want
to give up the ability to reach people without borders, firewalls, scanning
software, search software and all the other figments of oppression that we
once were proud of Radio Free Europe (we thought) for dissolving. Mobility
and
convenience of terrestrial radio is superior over anything offered by "hot
spots",
waiting on buffering and clunky non-ergonomic devices like computers or
handheld
crap with buttons the size of most politician's brains.

As for the under-25s...what boneheads. You're always a bonehead when your
under 25 which is why they pitch to this group because kids will rush out
and
buy anything. It's not until your older than 25 that you figure out it's all
a con game by the fat titted old men who run everything that they're shaking
you down for as much money as they can.

Lastly, the Voice of America ceased being of any interest to listeners many
years ago
when it adopted its new "Board of Governors" mission.

I am in very strong agreement with what you say, you make excellent point.

There are a thousand other things, and worthless ones, which I would see
cut before ever touching SW. Aid to foreign countries is but one ...
just cutting the "welfare payments" to israel would give us a nice sum
to spend on SW ... getting out of the UN would be another way ...
countless ways, when you look, really ...

Same old song we heard with BBC.

Isn't anymore true now than it was then.

But, remember, these broadcasts are both political in origin and often
propagandist in nature.

Given the current tone, both in Washington and worldwide, that they
would be ending the most direct, and most portable, methods of
dissemination is hardly a surprise.

Hello dxAce

Radio Nederland Wereldomroep (Radio Netherlands World Service,
http://www.rnw.nl/english ) also has to deal with financial cuts.
They will "change focus".

According to the latest plans, this means they will virtually end
transmissions in Dutch, but continue transmissions to areas where
freedom of press isn't in the dictionary.

Anyone who uses Google is naive. Of course they've worked hard to work it
into our every day conversation..."blah blah blah just Google such and such"
like "Xerox" or having a "Coke." The fact of the matter is that our friends
at Google are a data mining organization BASED AT THE N S A in Washington.
When I hear guys like Alex Jones talking about "googling" I wonder how much
of a friend of the people really he is; surely he knows what Google is and
where they come from. Beware.

startpage.com is a page which claims to "make anonymous" and sanitize
your searches ... it is just a layer added to google, the results are

I am therefore happy that "Radio Nederland Wereldomroep" (RN)
