WOW? Not you, but what idiot decided to use "digital" to describe an
electronic ballast.
Digital computers deal with numbers. Digital systems deal with binary
numbers (perhaps, soon "trinary" numbers as the 3-state electronics
become available.)
There is nothing digital about fluorescent ballasts, except the name.

That's OK... the shill isn't talking about fluorescent ballasts, they're
talking about HID ballasts (mercury vapor, high pressure sodium, metal
halide). Digital technology could be used for these by using "steppers" to
ramp the voltage up and down based upon current detection.

While you are technically correct, about a LED being mentioned in the
original post, the difference between sodium/mercury-vapor and
fluorescent BALLAST is minimal, to an engineer.
Voltage step-up/step-down, or even wave shape has nothing to do with
"digital."
While not absolutely necessary, a digital wave shape will be of a square
wave, however ramp and even sine can be handled with processing. And, a
simple flip-flop circuit can generate a square wave, process this though
a current regulator, then a voltage regulator and you, basically, have
your "digital ballast", but it has nothing to do with anything truly
"digital."
The name "digital" is more of a marketing scam than anything else it
its' use in describing the ballast, kinda like "solid state" (a pencil
is solid state!), "state of the art" ("new" is simply relative),
"space-age" (products developed after successful space flight), etc.

4) of, relating to, or being data in the form of especially binary
digits <digital images> <a digital readout>; especially : of, relating

5) providing a readout in numerical digits <a digital voltmeter>
6) relating to an audio recording method in which sound waves are

Is the outer shell glass, or something more durable, like a polymer?
With glass, if the inside gets broken, there's a pretty good chance
the outside cover would also be broken by the same trauma.

I run UV sterilizers on all my aquariums, to kill organisms in the
water, they have quartz sleeves to keep the water from the UV lamp
(quartz has very high transmission efficiency to UV rays), inside the
housing.
Trust me, while the quartz does seem tougher than the glass bulb, they
break, in my opinion, too easily -- I have broken two over 5 years ...
Decades ago, in high school, I remember a physics instructor with a
special type of pyrex glass tube, he drove an eight penny nail into a
board with it -- it was a hollow tube and quite shocking to watch ...
the tube did not even chip.
I have often wondered why I have not seen this glass, more, in different
uses -- the only other time I have seen this glass was when working for
lawrence livermore labs -- glass viewing ports, where explosive
experiments were carried on behind them.
During the 1970s the coors beer bottles used to be able to withstand a
surprising amount of abuse without breaking, I don't know if they still
possess that quality or not ... often, when tossed out of a moving car
they would just bounce, skip and slide along a highway without
shattering/breaking.

lasted about 6 months before they dimmed too much or just stopped working.

The major differences I have found, you can have about a dozen cheaply
built computers for the same cost as one big expensive computer.
But then, I have a closet in the basement full of motherboards, towers,
desktops, video cards, LCD monitors, etc.
All picked up very cheaply at flea markets, yard sales, etc.

I am not into name brand computers. I like generic cases -- towers, but
have desktops.
Prefer NVIDIA video cards, SATA hard drives, 550W+ power supplies, etc.
DELL, HP, COMPAQ, etc. are all junk, ACER is OK, in laptops.
I am still waiting for a generic laptop case and components where you
can finally build a custom laptop!
