More reason to doubt our self assessments of calories in vs calories

Willbond SM et. al. Normal weight men and women overestimate exercise
energy expenditure. J Sports Med Phys Fitness. (2010) 50(4):377-84.

AIM: The limited potential of exercise to induce weight loss could be
partly due to the overestimation of the energy cost of exercise. The
objectives of this study were twofold: 1) to investigate whether men
and women are able to accurately estimate exercise energy expenditure
(EE); and 2) to determine whether they have the ability to accurately
compensate for the EE of exercise during a buffet-type meal.

METHODS: Sixteen (8 men, 8 women) moderately active (VO2 peak=45.4±7.7
mL.kg-1.min-1), normal weight (BMI=22.8±3.3 kg/m2) individuals, aged
20-35 years, were studied. They were blinded to two randomly assigned
experimental conditions: a 200 and a 300 kcal (measured by indirect
calorimetry) exercise sessions that were performed on a treadmill at
the same intensity (50% of VO2 peak). At the end of each exercise
session individuals were asked to estimate EE of the exercise sessions
and to then eat the caloric equivalent of their estimated exercise EE
from a buffet-type meal.

RESULTS: Estimated EE was higher than measured EE for both the 200
kcal (825.0±1061.8 vs. 200.1±0.7 kcal, P<0.05) and 300 kcal
(896.9±952.4 vs. 300.2±0.7 kcal, P<0.05) sessions. Further, post-
exercise energy intake was higher than measured EE for the 200 kcal
(556.8±204.4 vs. 200.1±0.7 kcal, P<0.001) and the 300 kcal
(607.2±166.5 vs. 300.2±0.7 kcal, P<0.001) sessions. Although post-
exercise energy intake was lower than estimated EE, no significant
differences were noted.

CONCLUSION: These results suggest that normal weight individuals
overestimate EE during exercise by 3-4 folds. Further, when asked to
precisely compensate for exercise EE with food intake, the resulting
energy intake is still 2 to 3 folds greater than the measured EE of
exercise.

I am always astounded at how much people can overeat at a buffet. I just
don't get it. I never have done that. In fact I usually make two trips if
I am unfamiliar with the buffet. The first time I will just take a little
taste of anything I think I might like. Then if I do like it, I will go
back. I learned this the hard way. We had a fancy restaurant here in
Bellvue with a salad car. Yes, it was a salad bar set in some fancy old
car. Weird restaurant with various themes throughout. My friend pointed to
some little carrots and told me they were really good. So I took a big
pile. Turns out they were pickled and although I like pickles, I do not
like pickled carrots.

I don't understand the need for people to take 2 or 3 desserts. Why even
take one? Nobody needs dessert! I never take it. In fact I usually do not
even vary what I take from what I normally eat unless perhaps they have some
food I really like that the other people in my house do not. So something
we don't really get at home.

Mainly I will take mostly vegetables. If there are beans (as in dried) I
will take those. If there are no beans I will take a very small amount of
meat. Only because I need the protein. Not because I like meat. Because I
don't.

I will usually even pass up the soup because for one thing I don't know what
is in it. I have found that many restaurants use some sort of soup mix or
even Campbell's soup. That stuff is usually loaded with carbs and it has
stuff in it that I can't eat. Like eggs and dairy. I once took a very
small cup of bean soup at a buffet. The only other thing I had was salad.
Spike city.

Not attending such a restaurant that's available to you is exactly the
same sort of self-discipline as not overeating while attending either a
conventional, or a buffet style, restaurant.

Why would I when I can make exactly what I want at home, or order a nice
meal at a good restaurant? But then, I'm not at "all you can eat" buffets to
report on what other diners are eating either. I've honestly not paid
attention to what other people are eating when dining out...oh, and I could
rarely tell you what other people have in their grocery carts either since I
guess it's not important enough to me for it to stick in my old brain.

Exercise is important, but the increase in calories is not as
large as people hope for. Without exercise we tend to lose
muscle instead of fat. Exercise also helps improve circulation
both of the blood and the lymph. This is especially important
for those of us who suffer from allergy or neuropathy.

Many of us were already seriously debilitated at the time we were
diagnosed. There is no way to burn significant calories through
exercise in that state. Too much emphasis on burning
off fat is discouraging. Better to concentrate on improving
our ability to exercise. Don't think about it; just do it.

Really?? I love buffets. I don't eat at all of them, but there are a
few that offer good, freshly prepared food. Dinner at a buffet offers a
wide choice of foods (one doesn't have to eat a "regular" portion) that
usually aren't prepared at home, or at least prepared easily. Yes, I
sometimes overeat at a buffet, but food is one of the big pleasures in
my life and I truly enjoy a meal out with family and/or friends and the
chance to share (or not) all kinds of food.

As for dessert, yes I sometimes eat more than one. Again, a wide choice
of things I never have at home. I don't buy dessert type stuff for home
because I'll eat it.

Exactly. I have known any number of people damaged by sports such as
football injuries or motor bike wrecks such exercise was impossible or
unlikely.

That last comment implies that *all* of "those places" are inferior and
unhygienic. Many are, but certainly not *all*. There are many
non-buffet eating establishments out there, many of which offer quantity
of quality and are pretty unhygienic to boot. Whether you're going to a
buffet or a non-buffet restaurant use your senses and best judgment to
decide if the place is some place you want to eat or not.

That is very true. I was telling Angela how I stupidly did this move when I
was pregnant with her. Not sure what it is called but you lay on your back
and throw your legs back over your head so that your feet touch the floor.
I could do that in my first Tri-mester with her. I didn't realize that it
is not advised when pregnant. Anyway, that is how flexible I was back then.
I was in very good shape.

I went from that to barely being able to walk by the end of my pregnancy. I
didn't realize that my veins had gone bad and my legs had swollen like
watermelons. True, it wasn't just the diabetes that got me but the
pregnancy too. I do believe that what I really had back then was type 2 and
not GD since I was diagnosed just past my first Tri-mester.

After I had her, the swelling didn't go away as they told me it would. I
went from barely being able to walk to not being able to walk at all when
she was just past a year old. That is what led to my diagnosis.

Nope. From what I have seen, most people do not. There are times when a
buffet is unavoidable such as at a wedding or other party. Of course the
other option is just not to eat at all.

I do know countless people who go without food all day so that they can eat
like pigs at a buffet. They plan to do it that way.

We eat occasionally at buffets because it is quick and we can get what we
need there such as a big salad or because I figure everyone in my picky
family with multiple food issues can usually get what it is that they need
to eat. However after getting sick the last few times we ate at one such
buffet, we will no longer go there. And there aren't any others in this
area aside from the Asian ones. They do not have suitable food for us.

While eating at these places and other restaurants, I can't help but notice
what the other people are eating.

For instance, recently we saw what appeared to be a tall sword being brought
to the next table over. It was piled high with onion rings. There was a
man and a pregnant woman eating these. I also saw the man eating wings. I
was a bit concerned because I thought maybe the pregnant woman was just
eating junk. I did check the table out after they left. I would appear
that she had some sort of a salad. But I think he just ate the junk. I
wouldn't have even noticed this had the onion rings been served on a plate
or platter. But when they come on a huge tall spike like that, one tends to
notice.

Really? I always look to see what others are eating or have in their
shopping carts. It's interesting to me.

I have never gone to a buffet because it was "all you can eat". I have only
gone because I love salad bars. And in this area they are the only places
that still have them. Alas, they seem to have gone the way of the wind.
Most restaurants do have large salads on the menu but they almost always
contain things I can't have. Nuts, seafood, chicken, cheese. Once in a
while I will find one where I can have them just leave one or three things
off. But when I have to ask for a ton of things to be left off, then all I
wind up with is a big bowl of lettuce. I like to have a variety of veggies.
But I guess I am in the minority.

There are buffets with high quality food. One that is no longer there was a
place called Angie's Little Italy. Yes, it was Italian food but it was
really good and freshly prepared. She only offered the buffet once a week I
think and it wasn't a huge buffet. There is another place in PA called The
Unicorn. They have a small buffet on Sundays and it is really good food.
Not all buffets simply put out mass quantities of frozen food on a steam
table.

Indeed! In fact the buffets here do not like children under a certain age
even go to the buffet by themselves.

I was pretty much spot on. What I was very wrong on though was a portion
size of cheese. My mom always treated cheese as though it were a fattening
poison so I thought we could only have a wafer thin piece at a time. I was
shocked to see how much I could really eat to be a serving.

The restaurant at the not too distant Indian casino offers both. The
quality of the food is average.

Yes, and I for one love buffets for their salad bars.
Can't be duplicated at home without a major hassle.

Yes, they have. I remember a time when even Booger King had a salad bar.
And Carl's. Lame ones but great inexpensive alternatives to their greasy
burgers.

Yeah, and they are always the same salads: Chef, Chicken, Taco and Tuna.
The Taco Salad is in fact not a real salad: just a taco without a wrap
and a little more lettuce.

There are a number of outlets in Melbourne called Felafel Kitchen, and they
serve chicken, beef and lamb along with a large variety of delicious
self-serve salads and dips. I could eat as unhealthy - in both quantity and
quality - as I chose, but I choose a large variety of salads which are lower
carb and in modest quantities. I normally have lunch there a couple of times
a week. In these cases I have a small evening meal. That's what I like about
the buffets I've been to - "dial up carbs"

I believe you can go to an "unhealthy" food place but still eat healthy,
depending on what you select and how much you eat. Alternatively you can go
to a place professing itself to sell "health food" and still overeat on
crap.

Yes! That's why I love them too. And in the old days before I knew about
my food intolerances, if I wanted a bite of potato or pasta salad, I could
have that too!

I remember one at Wendy's where they gave you a pita bread. But the best
one was at the Burger Master that is no longer there. There's another
restaurant there now but it sucks. Very limited menu and only like two
things if you can't eat wheat.

The chef isn't even widely available here any more. Only a few places sell
it. Mostly it's chicken, salmon or shrimp with some kind of nuts (often
candied) and usually sweet fruit. Or the Caeser. That's everywhere.

Good! Having a taco salad tonight. No shell. Just Mexican type veggies in
a bowl with some green salad, taco meat and salsa.

Luckily most of the gas stations here have a mini mart attached and most of
those do sell some suitable food. Might be a pre-packaged salad but there
are also usually single serve cheeses, lunch meat and usually fresh fruit.

But not for school children when going to classes.

So BE an Ayoob, and like Ayoob, support giving all children an adequate
breakfast before school.

"But Keith Ayoob, director of the Rose R. Kennedy Center Nutrition
Clinic at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, said the
programs arenąt the problem.
łThere is a mountain of research that shows school breakfasts, and
particularly breakfast in the classroom, have a  positive outcomes,˛ he
said, describing a drop in truancy, behavior problems and visits to the
school nurse as well as an improvement in grades. łSchool breakfasts are
not making kids overweight. If theyąre eating two breakfasts, parents
need to know that and adjust accordingly at home.˛
Speaking to the New York Academy of Medicine Thursday, Ayoob defended
breakfast programs and stressed the importance of parents keeping track
of what their kids are eating.
łWe donąt want some kids going hungry just because some kids are
overeating,˛ he said. łA child getting two breakfasts is a much easier
fix.˛
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/health/2012/04/20/school-breakfast-programs-p
anned-for-feeding-kids-twice/

And, apparently, ABChung would rather have kids hungry all the time and
out of control in classes than breakfasted and good students.

But not for school children when going to classes.

Hungry children in classes don't learn, nor allow others in those
classes to do so.

So BE an Ayoob, and like him, support giving all children an adequate
breakfast before school.

"Incorrect, death does not stop/reverse obesity."

In such word play no one who loved the little black girl can take much
solace. Death by starvation is a terrible thing. Trying now to excuse it
is an evil thing.

Absolutely incorrect. Obesity is not stopped/cured/reversed by death
through fasting/starving (i.e. 0 oz of daily food) as evident by obese
people not being able to fast longer than those who are normal weight
before dying. Instead, they die long before they even approach
becoming normal weight.

Again, your persistent delusions here are consistent with your being
eternally condemned.

Chung is an ARROGANT, INSANE, SPAMMING P.O.S.,
and everyone on Usenet knows it.
He's a loser and a sick, insane, creep with no friends,
here or anywhere.

WARNING: Chung is TOTALLY INSANE.
Andrew B. Chung is a destroyer of Usenet. I hope that
someday, the extremely arrogant Mr. Andrew B Chung
pays for the destruction he has wrought upon Usenet,
especially, the all-Chung-spam, sci.med.cardiology, a
formerly very helpful Usenet site for people with serious
heart problems, now totally destroyed by an egomaniac.
Chung's total arrogance has also destroyed
alt.christnet.christianlife, alt.support.diabetes, and
misc.health.alternative. Chung is an supremely arrogant
person, totally egocentric. Pure ego. All ego, and
nothing but ego. There is NO CURE for this condition.
There is a long-term dietary cure, but the patient is
always far too arrogant to follow it. They KNOW the
answer to EVERY question, and they are "always right".
In the most extreme cases, they even KNOW how "God"
and "Jesus" want the rest of us to live. (A. B. Chung)
A small percentage of the population is like this, one
percent or less. Such people are usually unable to get
along with others, and have no real friends. They know
something is not right, but keep quiet about it, and try
to behave "normally".
Many of them pursue fame with extreme determination.
An example is Anna Nicole Smith.
Chung's goal is to someday sit to the left of "God" with
"Jesus" on the right, in "God's" "Heavenly Palace".
WARNING: Chung is TOTALLY INSANE.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

WELCOME TO THE ASSHOLE OF USENET, i.e. AN ANDREW B. CHUNG POST.
GROUND ZERO FOR USENET'S MOST INSANE, ARROGANT, SPAMMING CREEP.

WARNING: Chung is a "dongdan" (cross-dresser, drag-queen) serial
cyberstalker, particularly of gay, and especially, trans-gender males.

WARNING!! YOU HAVE CLICKED ON ANDREW B. CHUNG SPAM
CHUNG IS INSANE! HE IS A DANGEROUS PERSON. HE IS A TOTAL
EGOIST - ALL EGO AND NOTHING BUT DIAMOND-HARD EGO.
CHUNG IS ON A QUEST FOR GLORY SUFFICIENT TO MATCH SIZE
OF HIS ENORMOUS EGO. CHUNG BELIEVES HE WILL SOMEDAY
SIT IN GOD'S HEAVENLY PALACE TO THE LEFT OF GOD WITH
JESUS ON THE RIGHT. CHUNG IS TOTALLY INSANE.

WARNING: Chung posts links to his website in order to sell the Chung
"2PD-OMER" diet, a diet that combines "religious" extremism with
dietary extremism. The origin of this quack diet is Chung's
interpretation of biblical scripture in which he reveals that both
"Jesus" and "God" carried around scales and religiously weighed
everything they ate, never consuming more than a biblical "OMER",
todays equivalent of 2 pounds according to Chung's "calculations".
Chung further claims that WHAT you eat is not important, eat roadkill
if you like. Just don't get carried away and consume more than 2
pounds. Chung adds in the strongest terms, that going over 2 pounds
even once is a "perishing soul" offense, and warns that his Messiah,
"LORD" Jesus Christ, teacher of love and forgiveness, will personally
roast alive all offenders.

The dietary insane blather of Andrew B. Chung:

"Moreover, the fact that babies are born hungry with empty stomachs
**and** functioning brains is absolute scientific proof that hunger
does not destroy brain cells but rather promotes their rapid growth as
evident by what happens in utero."

GSI response: Babies are nourished by the mothers blood through the
umbilical cord and placenta, as anyone who has taken first year biology
in High School knows. Chung shows almost NO real medical knowledge. No
medically trained person would EVER write the bullshit sentence above.

"Actually, hunger for real food is simply a desire to eat real food
that is verified by the ability to eat real food and may be accompanied
by stomach sounds that allow others to verify the desire to eat real
food even **before** the eating happens." -Andrew B. Chung

( We are so lucky here on UseNet to have free access to the hard earned
wisdom of brilliant medical professionals like Dr. Chung - "Hunger for
real food is simply a desire to eat real food that is verified by the
ability to eat real food." Wow!, who would have guessed? )

"Hunger for real food does not indicate a need for real food as evident
by this desire often increasing when the food is especially palatable
in the middle of eating the "right" daily amount (32 oz, one "OMER")
when any real need would be decreasing." -Andrew B. Chung

GSI response: here Chung, in his determination to be "right", hopes
that you won't notice that "need" and "desire" don't mean the same
thing.
Chung, take your 2 digit IQ, moronic, "diet" bullshit to the
appropriate newsgroups. "alt.christnet.christianlife,
alt.bible.prophecy" etc. are not the place for arrogant hourly "status"
updates on how many ounces of food an arrogant spamming
asshole-"religious" hustler has consumed. What you are doing here is
PURE ARROGANCE. There is NOTHING "holy" or "righteous" about it. You
and your sock-puppets are ARROGANT. The rigid "diet" you promote leads
to making you even more arrogant, i.e. bigger ASSHOLES. Though it
hardly seems possible, you will become even more egocentric, rigid, and
self-righteous."

No medical professional would EVER endorse your QUACK diet. Just as no
real scientist would ever endorse Creationism. Both are what happens
when stupid people attempt to force their stupid, LITERAL
interpretation of the Bible into the fields of science and medicine, to
"PROVE" that THEY are the "smart" ones. Food is primarily fuel. There
is NO ONE RIGHT AMOUNT for all people in all climates and all daily
activities, any more than there is one "right" amount of gas for your
car. A lumberjack cannot do a days work on 32 oz. of food, while for
instance, an arrogant, INSANE, internet spammer like Chung probably
could. And it DOES matter WHAT you eat.
The 2IQ-MRON diet is pure 2 digit IQ Evangelical BULLSHIT, and an
attempt to extend Christian Evangelicalism into a highly profitable,
low risk, field of medicine. The suggestion that REAL medical
professionals at Emory University are supporting this BS is laughable.
The janitorial staff at Emory is smarter than that. Supply the phone
number of ONE medical professional who supports the idea that "God",
via INSANE Usenet spammer, Andrew B. Chung, has instructed all humans
to consume exactly 2 pounds of food daily, regardless of sex, age,
weight, activity, body-type/metabolism, climate, etc. to back up these
claims. Any medical professional supporting this diet should lose his
medical license immediately, and that includes Dr. Chung himself.

The Egomaniac "HeartDoc" explains why it doesn't matter that he has
lost his medical board-certification: (short answer-
"GOD-sanctification is infinitely greater than board-certification" -
A.B.Chung)

"This actively practicing physician ( http://WDJW.net/HeartDoc )
continues to be very well-compensated as a cardiologist b/c he is known
by all to be one of a chosen few to have the power of the Holy Spirit (
http://WDJW.net/HolySpirit ) to heal/cure/reverse (Mark 16:18) heart
disease including type-2 diabetes, which is a CAD equivalent, while
giving all the glory to GOD as seen on network TV:

Behold as http://WDJW.net/HeartDoc Andrew gives all the glory to GOD as
the http://www.11alive.com/news/article/251415/3/Doctor-Touts-Hunger
(Luke 6:21a) with all glory to GOD, Who causes (Deuteronomy 8:3) him to
hunger so that he can thrive as he enjoys his meals more than ever:
http://WDJW.net/LausDeo :-)

Bottom line concerning http://WDJW.net/HeartDoc Andrew being perfect
(Matthew 5:48):
GOD-sanctification (1 Thessalonians 5:23) is infinitely greater than
board-certification for He makes the latter eternal (1 Corinthians 2:9)
without need for eternal fee payments to ABIM :-)"

GSI response: I guess it's OK to practice medicine without a license,
as long as you have "GOD-sanctification", like the INSANE egomaniac,
Andrew B Chung.
