Thomas Richard Townsend BUCKNILL was a grandson of the Rt Hon Sir Thomas Townsend ("Tommy") BUCKNILL (18 IV 1845 - 4 X 1915), MP (Conservative) for Epsom, 1892-99, who was knighted on becoming a High Court Judge in 1899.

Sir Thomas Bucknill was the second son of the mental health reformer Sir John Charles BUCKNILL, FRS (25 XII 1817 - 19 VII 1897) and his wife (married 3 V 1842), Mary Ann TOWNSEND (1818 - 1889). He was married, firstly, in 1867 (divorced 1878), to Sarah Elizabeth DEPREE (c.1844 - ?) and secondly, on 21 December 1878, to (as her second husband) Annie Bell FORD (1852 - 9 XI 1924). There was no issue from his first marriage, but from his second marriage there were two sons (and three daughters, who all died young).

Sir Thomas Bucknill's second wife had been married, firstly, in 1869 (divorced 1877), to (as his first wife) John Strachey HARE (1845 - 24 IV 1893), who was the son of John Bowles HARE (12 XII 1812 - 25 IX 1897) and his wife (married 15 X 1842), Jane STRACHEY (1814 - 13 VII 1886), sister of Sir Edward STRACHEY, 3rd Bt (12 VIII 1812 - 24 IX 1901) and granddaughter of Sir Henry STRACHEY, 1st Bt (23 V 1737 - 3 I 1810), MP for Pontefract, 1768-74, for Bishop's Castle 1774-78 and 1780-1802, for Saltash 1778-80, and for East Grinstead 1802-07.

From her first marriage to John Strachey Hare, Lady Bucknill had a son and a daughter, who both took their stepfather's surname. The son, Sir John Alexander Strachey BUCKNILL, KC (4 IX 1873 - 5 X 1926), Attorney General of Hong Kong, 1912-14 and Chief Justice of the Straits Settlements, 1914-20, was the husband (married 1901) of Alice RICHARDS (died 23 VI 1959), the youngest daughter of Adm Sir George Henry RICHARDS, KCB, FRS (13 I 1820 - 14 XI 1896), Hydrographer of the Royal Navy, 1863-74.

Sir John Bucknill and his wife had three daughters, the second of whom, Honor Bell BUCKNILL (1904 -15 III 1994), was the wife (married 1930) of Col Ronald Douglas Martin Capel MIERS, DSO (1902 - 1974), of that landed gentry (LG) family (see Richard's posting at https://groups.google.com/g/peerage-news/c/LOLjhnkn-4Q/m/V0zM6_EaAgAJ reporting the death of their son).

Sir Thomas Bucknill's elder son, the Rt Hon Sir (Thomas) Alfred Townsend BUCKNILL, OBE, PC (1880 - 22 XII 1963) was the husband (married 1905) of Brenda BOULNOIS (1879 - 4 IX 1953), by whom he had a son and a daughter (who died young). The son, Peter Thomas BUCKNILL, QC (1910 - 11 I 1987), was the husband (married 1935) of Elizabeth Mary STARK (1911 - 1991), by whom he had three sons and three daughters.

Of interest to this group is that Peter Bucknill's youngest son, Gregory P BUCKNILL (born c.1950/1), was married, in 1972, to Caroline M LUNN-ROCKLIFFE (born 1951), the eldest daughter of David Craven LUNN-ROCKLIFFE (c.1925 - 23 VIII 2011), the co-founder of the Henley Rowing and River Museum, and his wife (married 1950), Elizabeth Victoria CAPRON (1929 - 15 V 2001), whose maternal grandfather was the 9th Lord Polwarth.

Sir Thomas Bucknill's younger son, Thomas Drake BUCKNILL (1884 - 13 VIII 1935), was the husband (married 1 VI 1909) of Phyllis EDELSTON (26 VI 1884 - 2 V 1972). Their third and youngest (and younger surviving) son was Thomas Richard Townsend Bucknill. Their eldest (elder surviving) son was Capt (John) Anthony BUCKNILL (1912 - 18 VII 1944), and their only daughter was June Patricia BUCKNILL (1923 - 6 V 2011), the wife (married 21 VII 1944) of F/Lt Jeremy Charles WILSON, DFC (21 V 1923 - 14 VII 2010), a grandson of the 1st Baron Nunburnholme (see Richard's posting at https://groups.google.com/g/peerage-news/c/FsQAg9g9x1o/m/mnfgDbihFAAJ reporting the death of their elder son).

Capt Anthony Bucknill was the first husband (married 1939) of Isabel Margaret ("Peggy") DENT (23 VIII 1916 - 29 X 2002), by whom he had two daughters, the younger of whom, (Margaret) Anne BUCKNILL (born 1942), was the wife (married 1968) of John Salusbury Kynaston MAINWARING (1938 - 23 XI 2023), of that LG family (see Richard's posting at https://groups.google.com/g/peerage-news/c/FJqEonVhk9c/m/zgm7NhNzAQAJ reporting his death).

Mrs Peggy Bucknill, née Dent, was married, secondly, in 1947, to Michael George Thomas WEBSTER (27 V 1920 - 26 X 2012), who was the elder son of James Alexander WEBSTER, CB, DSO (c.1884 - 6 XI 1964) and his wife (married c.1919), Constance COMBE (1887 - 25 VI 1956), who was the second daughter of Richard COMBE (11 VIII 1859 - 14 IV 1939), of that landed gentry family, of Pierrepont, Frensham, Surrey, and his wife (married 20 X 1881), Lady Constance Augusta CONYNGHAM (1859 - 14 VI 1941), second daughter of the 3rd Marquess Conyngham.

The related Combe and Delafield families ran Combe Delafield & Co Ltd, one of the major London breweries in the nineteenth century. In 1898, the business was amalgamated with Watney & Co Ltd and Reid's Brewery Co Ltd to form Watney, Combe, Reid & Co Ltd. This in turn merged with Mann, Crossman & Paulin Ltd in 1958 to form Watney Mann, which became one of Britain’s largest brewing groups at the time. Michael Webster had joined Watney, Combe & Reid in 1946, and became chairman in 1963, and in 1970 became chairman of the parent company, Watney Mann. He was the last family chairman before the company was taken over by the Grand Metropolitan hotel group in 1972 (they having already taken over Truman, Hanbury, Buxton & Co Ltd in 1971); subsequently, he joined Grand Met’s board and was briefly chairman of the combined brewery business, Watney Mann & Truman, before he retired in 1974.

Mr and Mrs Michael Webster had three daughters together: twins (Isabel) Jane and Susan Honour (born 1948/9) and (Camilla) Rose (born 1952). Jane is the wife (married 1976) of (Desmond) Shane Spencer CHICHESTER (born 9 IV 1948), a grandson of the 4th Baron Templemore and nephew of the 7th Marquess of Donegall. Susan is the wife (married 7 XI 1973) of the 11th Viscount Torrington (born 13 VII 1943), and Rose is the wife (married 31 I 1973) of Robert Roxburgh BALFOUR (born 29 VI 1947), of that LG family, of Dawyck, Peeblesshire.
