Hello and welcome. If you're new to the group, please take a moment
to introduce yourself by replying to this post. Google closes old
messages to replies so if there is only a "Reply to author" link on
this message, keep looking down the thread at newer posts until you
find one with a "Reply" link. Hitting "Reply to author" will send me
an email and not post to the group!

You can read older intros in the threads below:

I have just a 30 set up with convicts and a 1 gal with a female betta
(daughters). I have several that are empty right now that I need some
advice for, but I will post on that latter :) I have been keeping
fish for about 15 years now. Started out with goldfish and it kind of
exploded from there. So in the years since I have had all kinds of
goldfish, bettas, tetras, chiclids. Have had luck breeding some and
no luck breeding others. But all are educational, and I am passing on
the love to fish to my daughter (she's 3). I am really hoping to
learn more from others.
Thanks

Hi,

I'm Carlo. I just recently got into keeping fish. My dad was really
into fish but I thought they were kind of dumb when I was younger. A
few weeks ago though I got a 10 gallon tank in a whim and got a few
zebras and platys, and now I'm hooked. I'd like to learn from the
experts here on what the best practices are for keeping fish, and also
tips for setting up a nice tank.

Hi Carlo. So happy that bug bit you. You can understand what your
father was thinking now :-)

Look forward to hearing from you more. Is your tank planted? Always
a good way to go if you want a gorgeous tank.

Hehe yeah, I made sure to thank him. =]

Yes, my tank is planted. I bought some banana plants and java moss.
The banana plants are growing like crazy! I really like looking at
other people's planted tanks. It's amazing how nice some of them look.
Is there a popular website that people use to post pictures or do they
just do it on their personal sites? The member page listing looks like
mostly personal sites. I'd like to be able to browse pictures and
learn what the fish and plants in them are called so I can get ideas
for future tanks.

Hi Carlo. Have a look in our files section. We had a competition
last year to celebrate our first anniversary and we had a lot of
submissions. I also just google 'planted aquarium' when looking for
inspiration. Unfortuantly I just don't have 'green fingers' so my
tanks never look as good as the pictures.

Hello everyone. I am new to the group, and I see a lot of spam
messages from bots and the like in other groups on yahoo and such, so
I am thrilled to find a well-moderated group. Anyway, here is my
introduction post. I admit, it is sort of generic, because I use it on
other groups, but I am too lazy to type something new each time lol.

My name is Tasha. I am 30 years old, and a stay at home mom currently.
I am a hobby breeder, I guess you could call me. I don't do excessive
conditioning or anything like that. I buy my fish from Petsmart
usually, and put them in my large tank, and let them do the rest.
Sometimes I will separate a female and put her in the nursery tank,
but as my tank is almost all live bearers, I would be overcrowded too
soon. And so, I let them birth in the main tank and scoop out any fry
I might see and put them in the nursery tank. I call this a "natural
selection method." If they avoided getting eaten at birth by momma or
the other fish in the main tank, then obviously they must be destined
to carry on the next generation lol.

My tanks are as follows:

1 55 gallon long tank. This is my main tank. It is currently home to 3
Blue Paradise Fish (1 male and 2 females), 3 Black Fin Tetras, 3 white
clouds, 2 Golden Wonder Killie fish, 10 Neons Tetras, 2 Plecostamos
[sp?], 3 Corydoras catfish (2 albino, 1 green). Those are the non-
livebearers. It also houses 15 (or so) guppies: 1 male lyre tail, 2
male half-black red delta tail, 1 male German pink short tail (I think
it is called a German pink. That is the closest variety I could find
to how he looks), 2 wild-marked males, one of which might end up as a
lyre tail, and the rest are various fancy females, mostly golds,
though some do have a bit of color on their tails. Next, I have the
platies: 2 males (a mickey mouse and a golden sunset) and 6 females (3
red wags, 1 mickey mouse, 1 golden sunset, and 1 black hi-fin). The
last group of live bearers I own are the mollies: 1 male (creamscicle
sail fin lyre tail) and 4 females (1 black, 2 silver, 1 dalmatian) and
roughly a dozen juvenilles I haven't sexed yet, born about 2 or 3
months ago.

1 10 gallon tank. This is my nursery tank. As I find babies in the
main tank, I scoop them out and place them in here. On occassion, I
will also take the gravid female and place her in there, if it is an
eagerly awaited breeding. Right now, this tank is home to roughly a
dozen platies born about 3 months ago. The female was a red wag, and
as this was before I got the male mickey mouse, then it the golden
sunset male would have been the father. This pairing produced some
highly interesting results. So far, only one has actually shown any of
the distinct deep reddish orange of its mother, though all the fry
sport the deep black fins. The rest of them are very pale, with a few
even being white in the body, with blue eyes, though, again, they are
still sporting the black fins, so I know they are not albino. I am
eagerly watching them develop to see what they become. This tank is
also home to roughly 20 or so guppy fry, born yesterday, as well as a
couple molly fry and some others I am not quite sure yet born about a
week or 2 ago (all newborn fry tend to look alike lol). But as they
mature, I am certain to keep anyone interested updated.

1 1.5 gallon tank. The purpose of this tank is to house Jack, my Betta
Splendens. I bought Jack from a dollar store of all places, and have
had him almost 3 years so far.

1 30 gallon octagon. This is our project tank. We are in the process
of re-sealing it. It will take a few weeks. When it is done, I may
designate it a new nursery tank, or use it to keep the sexes seperate,
I dunno yet. It has possibilities.

1 1 gallon. This was jacks old tank. It has a crack. I am going to try
and repair it. If I can, I may use it for newborn fry or perhaps to
raise brineshrimp in. Who knows.

So, that;s me and my fish. Honestly, if we weren't renting this house
right now, I would probably have even more (or larger) aquariums, but
that is all space (and my fiancee, who thinks I am nuts lol) will
allow right now.

Welcome aboard Joe, maybe someone can help with your miserable tank.
Start a new thread and describe the setup, the maintenance and the
problem. Being 3 weeks into it might just mean the tank is still
cycling, or living the effect. Overfeeding can be a big issue too
(kids!).

Hi, I am new to the group, and is a fish frantic in Singapore. I enjoy
blogging about freshwater fishes, shrimp, terrapins, and crabs at <a
href="http://www.aquariumlore.blogspot.com"> http://www.aquariumlore.blogspot.com</a>.
In my free time, I do some research on freshwater fish species and
publish my findings on my blog, or travel around my country looking
for new aquarium suppliers to meet my demand for rare, exotic
fishes. :P Some of my adventures are chronicled in my blog.

At home, I have 4 x 36" tank, containing various small to medium size
fishes. there are quite a number of pictures in my blog regarding my
tank. :)

I joined this group as I love find out what is new in the aquarium
community online and how I can blog about it to interest my
readers. :P

Hi, Eugene - I enjoyed your blog and I, of course, went straight to your angel fish page. Nicely done. You provide links to angelfish sites, but of the four, two of them are not working, and the "varieties available" at Angelfish Alley led me to a blank page. But your intent appears to be in the beautiful photos more than the selling. I can think of at least one angelfish breeder with some nice gallery images and a few quicktime videos that would be happy to permit you to link to his site.

We'd love to share our experience with you, and believe me, we've experienced a lot. Where are you at as far as your startup tank? What kind of fish are you planning to keep, what kind of filter, any plants? Lighting? Do you test your water and has your filter completed nitrification? We're happy to have you aboard. Hi,
I was introduced to freshwater aquariums as a child in the family
home. It's been a long time since then, but I decided lately to start
it up again. I have a ten gallon tank with two Whisper filters (a "10"
& a "20"), a couple of plastic plants, a twelve inch bubble wand , and
a bubbler toy.
I joined the group hoping to find some anwsers to my problems in
setting things up. As my first post states, I've been having major
problems with ammonia levels.
Things sure have seemed to have changed since the old "family"
aquarium. I don't recall worrying about the water quality as much. In
those days we just had a 10 gallon tank with one of those corner
filters that uses charcoal and glass wool. No body ever mentioned
things like ammonia, nitrites, natrates, etc. It was essentially "plug
and play".
I'm really glad to find a group like this, and hope that in time I may
be able to provide others with the kind of help I now seek.
Thanks (in advance) to all!

Hi EJ. Welcome to the group. From what people have said it seems
that aquaria has changed loads in the past few years. I'm so glad
that we have all these gadgets and contraptions to help us now as I
don't know if I'd have been as interested :-)

I'm sure it won't be long before you are in the thick of things with
advice. I started 3 years ago and have been known to give the odd bit
of advice. Not saying it was great but made me feel good.

Please ask away, no question is too silly.

Hi, I am pretty new to the hobby. Last year we put in a teensy garden
pond and I bought a few tadpoles and snails. It was fun watching the
tadpoles grow into frogs. One made it to frog-hood and stuck around
awhile. The other tads got eaten by something, I suspect a neighbor's
cat. This year I got a few more tads but in the first week, something
got all of them but one. We had a 5 gallon aquarium my sister had
given us years ago and decided to set it up and bring the tadpole
indoors. Since I didn't really know what I was doing, I bought a small
bag of live sand as the substrate. Soon, due to the way the water
started to smell, I realized I needed to buy a filter.

Even though this is a freshwater tank, I suspect the live sand helped
it cycle very quickly. Once I learned about water testing I started
doing it, but never got high ammonia or nitrite/nitrate readings in
that tank. That tank now has a tadpole, myriad little pond snails, and
maybe a couple of ghost shrimp although I think now that the tad is
big enough to have hind legs, he might have eaten the shrimp.

We decided to get another tadpole and move them to a ten gallon tank.
By this point we had learned enough about it to know how to set up the
tank (with gravel substrate and live plants) and that it had to cycle.
I had a bunch of rosy red minnows outdoors in the pond that kept
dying, so instead of tadpoles I moved them into the ten gallon tank.
Also bought a mystery snail and some ghost shrimp. Lost a few more
minnows while the tank was cycling and then the ammonia was so high I
removed them and let it finish cycling with just the shrimp and snail.
When the nitrites were high, also found a couple of dead shrimp but I
am not sure that's what killed them since they survived the high
ammonia for so long. They just turned white and stopped moving. I also
found an empty shell so I know one moulted.

The tank is cycled now, and is stable with three rosy red minnows,
some ghost shrimp, a golden mystery snail and a few tiny pond snails
that are laying eggs all over the place so I am trying to get rid of
them. The plants are hornwort, a java fern that is pretty beat up by
now, and a fanwort which I might remove due to shedding.

Future plans are to get a betta for the five gallon tank when the
tadpoles turn into frogs and have to go back outside, and to add maybe
some panda corys to the ten gallon. Eventually want to get a larger
tank but not until we learn more.

Sorry this is so long!

Hi I'm janet and I live in Antigua in the Caribbean. I've been here
about 18 years, I'm originally from the UK. I have a tropical tank set
up, and as I live in the tropics I run it without a heater! I have a
problem though. The electricity supply is very poor and we frequently
get power cuts lasting many hours, so it really doesn't do my aquarium
much good for the pump to be off for extended periods. I lost quite a
few fish when I first set it up here, so what I do now is go to the
local pond and catch some wild guppies. They seem to be much hardier
than fish brought at my local pet shop and can mostly stand the
problems. We only have 1 shop selling tropical fish and I'm really not
sure how well they look after the fish as there are frequently dead
ones in the tanks. That's another reason I'm catching local fish. They
aren't quite as pretty as the pet shop fish but I've had them for a
long time now.

Glad to join the group.

Hi Janet,
For areas where power is a problem, I suggest you use sponge filters
on powerheads. These will keep their bacteria alive much longer, with
less harm to the fish. Having a low fish load and live plants will
help too.

Welcome to the group.

My name is Collin. I had never been around fish tanks or aquariums
ever, until my boss at work got one. I must admit at first I wasn't to
happy about the whole thing. Now being that I have moved on into my
own location, I have done the same by adding a fish tank to my work
place. At the moment i only have a few clown fish. My plan includes
adding 2 eels and if I'm lucky 1 would be albino. I'm trying to find

Well local fish need tending too,

What kind of filter are you running? You might want to pick up some kind of UPS if the blackouts are fairly short, or a battery powered airpump if feasible.

Hi and thanks for the welcome.

I've had freshwater and saltwater tanks before. Did okay with the
freshwater (as an ignorant hobbiest) and very poorly with the
saltwater. Since then changes in my life have ended my fishkeeping and
seen my tank given to my sister for her corn snake. My husband and I
are planning on buying a home in about a year's time and will be
getting another tropical, freshwater tank. I'm here now in order to
learn what I need to learn to do a better job this time.

Hi all,

Im Deepak, from India and just getting into the hobby.
Im almost at the end of researching and will be setting up a 3ft tank
in next week or so. Have been fascinated by the native fishes of India
and will try to concentrate on these.
Hope to learn things as much as I can and then contribute back.

Hi to the Group!

After a couple of months of talking about it, my wife and I just set
up a small freshwater aquarium. It's a 20L (76 liter) sized tank, and
we've put 4 platys and 3 ghost shrimp into it so far. We made a
couple of mistakes (chose crushed coral for the substrate before
thinking about whether we wanted plants, for example), but everything
is healthy and the water appears to be cycling ok. We'll probably top
out with two more platys in a couple of weeks if everything remains
stable.

Our interests are small freshwater tanks, and we're thinking about one
or two 10G/38-liter tanks to try other things. We'd like to try a
planted aquarium for sure, and we're interested in a number of other
fish species. Clearly, we've got to do more homework, so we're
looking forward to learning from everyone here.

And Hi right back atcha! The 20 gallon long tank is a lovely shape and size for torpedo shaped fish and guppies with lots of plants. And 20 gallons is about the minimal size I would recommend for a first tank.
Welcome aboard and good fishkeeping.

My name is Jeff and I'm in Atlanta, GA. My enthusiasm for tropical
fish tanks
began when a friend of mine, who was living in Hawaii, had an awesome
saltwater tank.
It took a lot of work, so I started slow, with the Betta. The
enthusiasm of the kids
made fishkeeping a no brainer. Also, I started a blog, I hope I can
mention it here,
but its new. http://www.tropicalfishtanksblog.com.

One great aspect of fishkeeping is allergies. My wife is extremely
allergic to most pets,
but fish are no problem!

It has been pointed out to me, pointedly, by the TFA management, that
my quick response in suggesting that the web sites below appeared to
be spam was perhaps inappropriate. I followed the links to the sites
in question and followed the links, but was unable to find anthing
that appeared to be blogs. One site included in its name, "my income

Magazine for $40 a year, when I know that TFA's regular subscriber
price is $28. But I concede that I may be seeing spam where there is

Finally !

I've been in the hobby for a few years, with a Juwel Vision 180
Community tank with Kribs, Neons, Normans Lampeye, Swordtails etc.
I've also enjoyed breeding projects such as Endlers, Guppies, and of
course my favourite has to be Kribs.

I say finally, because I gave up lurking in Usenet a good while back
because it became unusable due to trolls and idiots. This group is a

I've mentioned off and on for several years that I would like an
aquarium. You don't have to get up at 3 AM to let the fish out, nor
clean up the back yard when they're done! And fish don't keep you or
the neighbors awake.

So my birthday present this year was a 20-gallon starter set-up. Just
add water and fish, yah? Hah!! First add gravel and decorations, set
it all up and add water, monitor every night for a week, and THEN add
your first small fish. It would have been less work to get another
dog, I think!!

But the tank seems to be doing okay so far. I started with four Zebra
Danios about a week ago. Last night we added six Platys. The
instructions with the aquarium said to introduce the fish a few at the
time, and monitor water quality, so we're taking it slow rather than
lose all the fish. I think I'd like to add some Neon Tetras, an algea-
eater or two, and maybe something with some lots of color. The
problem I may have is that our water here is so hard - the GH on my
test strip is always off the chart. But the fish don't seem to mind.

Cheers!

Careful Ed, this can become an additive hobby. Fish which naturally
enjoy harder water conditions are the livebearers (Guppy, Platy, Molly
and Swordtail), and lake fish from around the world (such as Rainbows
from Australia & New Zealand). Check our group links to learn about
cycling a tank (which is where you are now). It's probably the
hardest part of the hobby, the first 6 weeks, while the tank's waste
disposal sanitarial services get established by the bacteria. Any
questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Hello,
I missed this when I joined, and sent a intro and question to the
group. However I will do so here as it is the proper place.

I live in the "North Cost" in the USA. That is the Great Lakes
region. Not very tropical here, so heaters are a nessasary tool!

I am a 60 year old maile, that did have 2 tanks at 55 gallon each. I
had a community tank in one, and "Knuckles and Spike" lived in the
other. Two Oscars that grew from about an inch to whoopers that were
about 8 inches plus tail fin. They were getting mishapened by being
in too small a tank.

I was pretty uninformed, in fact the only thing that kept me going
without all dying was water changes and a filter the use dia something
earth, that I hung on the side of the tank to get rid of the
cloudyness. I worked long hours at the time, and the wife was not an
ardent fan, so I sold the stuff and have not been interested in quite
awhile.

About a month ago I purchased a red Betta for my office, and now I am
hooked on the idea again. Been reading, and see a great many of the
mistakes that I was making before. Know that I should mabe get a
bigger tank than a 12 gallon, but it is as large as the office can
support. If I am successful at the office and my interest stays high,
I will introduce the hobby to my home once again. Hey, my wife has a
cat I can not stand, so it seems only fair... Besides, I plan to
retire and bring it home in 5 years, if we still have retirement
savings left by then. I sure like bull markets better than bear ones!

I look forward to meeting all of you, and learning from you.

Hi! I'm new to the forum but not at all new to the hobby. Since I do
have a personal website (www.oursimplejoys.com) with a section devoted
to my articles on fishkeeping, let me just pick up from my "About Me"
page to introduce myself...

I grew up in Asia, helping my parents care for several aquariums and
outdoor ponds filled with swordtails, carps, and tilapias. My passion
for aquarium fish expanded to breeding and caring for numerous exotic
varieties when the family engaged in a tropical fish venture. I also
assembled aquarium tanks, raised live fish food, and maintained
community set-ups in homes, schools, and business establishments. The
family endeavor gave me the opportunity to take part in local
exhibitions and conduct tutorials for fish hobbyists. I am now a
freelance writer sharing my knowledge and skills on tropical
fishkeeping and many other interests.

I am also in-between tanks right now, because we recently relocated,
and it might take a few more months before I can set up new tanks
again. I plan to start fresh, maybe work on totally new aquarium
concepts and designs. So, for now, I'm checking out fish groups and
forums, looking for inspiration to try something new.

Looking forward to participating in the discussions. Thanks!

Hello, everyone

I have been reading the posts in this newsgroup since it was created
but could not participate because of a computer problem that did not
allow me to create an account. I finally had somebody come and fix it.

I have two aquariums:
- a 100 gallon tank set up as a South American community, with
glowlight tetras, pristella tetras, bronze cories, Sterba's cories,
otos, cockatoo dwarf cichlids and brisltenose plecos. I also have two
small angelfish in quarantine who will eventually go in there. For
plants, there are three varieties of swordplants and lots of
sagittaria. There are also some really nice pieces of bogwood that
form caves for the catfish.
- a 20 gallon tank with Endlers, two varieties of swordplants and a
few sagittaria.

In addition, I keep two quarantine tanks running at all times; right
now they are both in use, one with the angels and the other one with
bristlenose pleco babies who were born in the big tank last December
(I caught them out one by one with a turkey baster...) .

For filters, I use Eheim Ecco (I love them!), 2 medium-sized ones on
the big tank and a small one on the 20.

I have kept the planting simple, with no stem plants because they grow
non-stop and constantly need trimming... I wanted to minimize the
work...

I do a 50% water change every week. Since I live in an area where the
water is extremely soft (less than one degree of hardness), I actually
have to add mineral salts to increase the hardness. I keep the pH
around 6.5.

I hope I will now be able to participate to the group once in a while
instead of always being on the outside looking in.

Hi all

Did not know about this post, hence never posted here (although have
shot some questions in the group before ;-) ). I am a newbie in this
hobby with my second full fledged aquarium. The first one was gifted
to a friend. I have had some fish pots (not bowls) before during my
childhood but was not successful.

Both of my aquariums 10g and 16g are freshwater community tanks. The
current one (16g) has the following:

4 mollies
2 guppies
2 snails
3 shrimps

2 live plants (i think one is dwarf grass and the other some plant
from new zealand).

I like aquascaping (with definitely zero skills) and try to copy what
I see and read about...

I have been following your posts for quite sometime now and find them
pretty interesting. Lets see where this hobby takes me...

Hay people  =D  New England here

Tank 1: 125 gal. fresh w/ 2 tiger Oscars and 1 pleco

Tank 2: 100 gal fresh w/2 gray bichirs, 1 ghost knife, 2 leopard
bushfish and a handful of corys

I've been keeping freshwaters for 4 years now, did some livebearer
breeding in the past, also raised up a Dragon Goby for my friend who
didn't have the room or finances to keep a large enough tank, setup,
and maintenance.

Well, I thought I'd say haaaaaay and get to know everyone  =D  Take
care!

Many of you here already know me from the old newsgroups days. Back at
the beginning of the century until about 2006, I had great adventures
in aquaria.

One of my greatest adventures included a 1000 Gallon acrylic tank with
freshwater game fish including a 27" Tiger Muskie, several Large Mouth
Bass, Bluegill (bream) Catfish and many many more. Owning a Bait and
Tackle shop we kept 10's of thousands of minnows (bait fish) so
feeding the tank was relatively cheep.

Filtered with a mid sized swimming pool sand filter/pump unit and a 70
Gallon wet sump with filter floss and bio balls. Always wanted to add
UV, but never got to it.

At one time we had nearly 2,000 Gallons of water going. Other tanks
included a 55g, 75g, 2 - 110g and one 1,000g (actually 955g) tank and
another 600 gallons for the minnow tanks.

Getting back into the hobby (obsession) and filled a 110g last week
with fresh water. Waiting for it to cycle with a few small freshwater
minnows. Thinking about Planted with Fancy Guppies for a change of
pace.

I have guppies which I have had for a few years now, they are doing really well, breeding as they do... and healthy, also have 4 otocinclus dwarf catfish, 3 of them are females full of eggs and one is a male , was wondering if the females lay will the guppies eat the eggs. Also have a tank with fancy tail goldfish, one has a bladder problem, he's a floater, wondering if anyone knows how long he has. This is my first time bogging. Not too sure how it works, But I am really happy to start and perhaps hope to meet other fish keepers and learn from your experience
Thank you

Welcome Conee, posting the issues in the group would be the next step,
but I can give you some remarks before you do that.

I think the Otos would only lay eggs in a more acidic environment
which would not be great for Guppies who like alkaline water, so I'm
not sure how that would work, but yes, if eggs were laid, they would
be eaten.

Try feeding the Goldfish sinking fish food. Very often they swallow
too much air with the floating foods. You can also try bits of
fruits, veggies or algae wafers. Many Goldfish like citrus
(tangerine, orange etc), so experiemnt with some small pieces.
cheers

Thank you very much, for your suggestions and kind welcome, I am new to blogging, yes indeed I would like to post in the group, with complete humility and sincerity' How do I do that or have I already done that?'
Thank you NetMax

If you open an existing 'thread' and want to add remarks, click on
'Reply', type and then press 'Send'

If you want to open a new 'thread' then on the home page, press + new
post, type and send.

It's actually called 'posting' since you are posting messages to a
public forum, rather than blogging which is more about putting up
messages related to yourself or some activity, and then having it read
by others.

Another term common to 'posting' is usenet, which is outside of the
Google servers and is usually not moderated.

hth (hope that helps)
