I've been here a month or so but want to become "official." :)
My name is Charlene and I live in New Hampshire. Been keeping fish
since 2000/2001, which started with a 3 gallon Eclipse tank and a
betta. I keep freshwater only, as I don't have the time or money to
have a saltwater setup.
Over the years I've had all type of tropical fish from rummynose
tetras various corydoras to my all-time favorite pl*co named Plecy.
He'd take food right from my hand! He got too big and with one little
ad in the free section of my paper, I was able to find him a good
home.
I've also been through some nasty diseases in the tanks from ich to
camallanus (or is it callamanus) worms in my rosy barbs. Lessons
learned, to be sure, of the importance of hospital tanks. So far I've
been lucky with my current stock, as they've been with me for at least
2-3 years now.
Currently in the house I have 5 tanks (29g, 10g, 5.5g, and two 3g).
My fishy friends get moved around occasionally but right now the big
tank holds serpae tetras, golden white cloud minnows, a fat botia
striata (striped loach), a bullnose pl*co (dwarf-sized), one big fat
SAE, and about 15 cory cats. The 10g holds glow-light and black neon
tetras, an oto cat, and another bullnose pl*c. I have two 3g tanks
that hold one betta and two, respectively (with a divider, of
course). Then there's my "baby" my 5.5g shrimp tank that HOPEFULLY
once ThatPetPlace sends me my sand will be upgraded to a 10g.
I used to think I was a big plant fanatic, too, and I LOVE a natural
tank. It gets to be too much work for me so now my tanks are mostly
moss - it's just easier to enjoy the thanks than to continue to dose
and monitor, etc.
I love this group for all it's knowledge and varied situations/
questions/advice and hope to stick around for a while.
Thanks for having me here!
Charlene (aka charstoy)
Welcome back and PLEASE keep us updated on your Silver Dollar project.

Hey neighbor. I live on the Maine coast and a new bridge with an observation
tower opened last month in my town. We can see the White Mountains from the
420 foot tower, so I'll give you a wave if I ever get up enough nerve to
make the climb.

If you can see Mt. Washington, I can too (sometimes on a clear
day)....be sure to send a cosmic hello!

Hi,My name is Barbara. I live in WV. I have 4 Tanks now. 29 g. with a
pair of Breeding Angels. 35g hex with bunches of Mollies.20 g. with 5
more Angels that havn't paired off yet. 10 g. that I just put a pair
of GBR in today. I use live and plastic plants.
But the main point of joing this group is that I'm also running a 55
gallon planted tank with a school of Neon Tetras, Ghost shripm, a male
Beta and a pleco. Now, I've had a lot of experience with marine tanks
and non-live plant fresh water tanks over the years but this is my
first attempt at a plant tank. I set it up about 3 months ago with a
3" deep mixed flourite and standard gravel substrate and I'm using
3x32 daylight 48" lights. The filter is a hang on the back dual bio
wheel. My plants are surviving but they are also starting to get
covered with a fine algae and also some of them are getting a weird
beard like algae growing on them. The algae grows very fast, I have to
pull some out every 2 or 3 days. (A handful) I'm not over feeding my
fish, but it appears that the algae is going wild anyway. (I feed once
a day, and only enough to keep the fish chowing for about 2 or 3
minutes) Any ideas what could be causing the algae to grow? How about
a good fish grazer to keep it in check?
I'm looking forward to learning from and sharing my own experiences
with you all!
Cliff
I've been reading here about a week and find a lot of the
conversations fascinating! I'm even getting DH interested in learning
more about the fish. I save a lot of the posts for future reference.

Welcome!
Planted tanks are a little different than a typical setup. A few of
us are passionate about them and we'll be happy to help you choose the
specialized equipment you need and get the plants growing.
--Altum
I have a forty gallon freshwater tank with:
3 black tetras
2 neon tetras
3 glolight tetras
4 sparkling gouramis
3 rummynose tetras
2 pygmy cory cats
1 male betta
Oh, and one apparently immortal apple snail. I've had her for 2 years
now, and she's--well, almost apple sized now. There was a time when
she had a boyfriend and we had a separate snail tank with her, her
boyfriend, and their many, many babies. Gave the babies away to
friends and gave the boyfriend away, too. Whew.
Also have one clam. I had four clams, but the snail took a liking to
the taste and had eaten three before I even realized what was
happening. The last one is well hidden in an inaccessible spot now.
Because of my snail, I've got all fake plants, though I have many of
them, which keeps the shy little gouramis happy.
My water seems great--today, before the weekly 20% change, I was
showing no ammonia, no nitrites, nitrates below 20, with hardness in
the ideal range and Ph a high normal (our water comes out of the tap
at 7.8). We use a mix of medium substrate and black sand. We keep
the tank at 76, a doable compromise between where the betta likes it
and where the snail likes it. Everyone seems happy with that
arrangement.
No real problems, though I do have a question about my rummy noses. I
guess I should post separately for that?
Happy to have found you, looking forward to learning and sharing.

I have been lurking in some of the Usenet aquaria groups and heard
about this forum. It looks to be more moderated and on topic so I
thought I would join in.
I was introduced to keeping fish by my grandfather. He had a 15
gallon tank with a goldfish that I won in a carnival. He knew little
about the hobby (and the requirements of goldfish) yet he managed to
keep that goldfish alive forever. I remember being fascinated with
the tank as a child. I was also blessed with many trips to the Shedd
aquarium, also with my grandfather, growing up in Chicago. It is
still my favorite museum.
I had a 55 gallon African Cichlid tank that thrived for many years
until I moved into a condo where I could not avoid direct sunlight. I
gave the tank to a friend and the cichlids to a local pet store.
I am now living in a house that is better suited to owning tanks so I
am back on the bandwagon. I have setup a 20 gallon for my daughter's
African Clawed Frogs, I am working on a 30 gallon planted tank, and I
am even re-possessing the 55 gallon I gave to my friend because it is
sitting in his garage.
I look forward to getting back into things. I am most excited about
the planted tank. It will be my first experience with a planted
aquarium.

I'm new here. Good to see such a thriving group ... you guys have a
great thing going here!
I've been out of the loop for the past 10 years or so, but had a few
tanks during my college years. Got married and started off with a
couple of kids and things slowed down.
Anyway, I'm in the process of building a new home and I've always
wanted a 'built-in' system maybe 125G or so, leaning towards
freshwater side. So far, it looks like I have a good chance of making
this happen and this group looks like a good place to have a couple of
friends when questions arise. I've already poured through the
archives and some of the member sites in an attempt to get back up to
speed.
Nice to meet all of you!

I'm from China, and now am in Charlottesville, VA, USA. I'm glad to
join this group! Thanks Denisendan who recommanded this group.
and I love fish...
I have absolutely zero knowledge of water features, but I look forward
to learning all there is to know.

I'm 23 y/o, married and recently moved into a new house where we
inherited a 1500 gal pond with many koi and a few goldfish. We live

become very attached to them and want to do everything I can to help
them have long, healthy, happy lives!

My name is Denis Gibbs, and I live in Cheltenham in the UK. In 4
months time I shall be 90 - yes 90.
In some way I feel an interloper, because I have come to this Group
for some advice.
I am the owner of patents in the UK and USA for a technoclogy which
perhaps will be of some use to aquarium afficianados. It is a very
simple patent and could be applied to set off an alarm (audio and
vidual) when water stopped running into a fish tank. From what I
gather - from some local friends - when water stops running into the
tank the fish may die - of several causes. Some say that when this
happens you know because you cannot hear the pump running - but what
happens if you are deaf?
Any advice will be gratefully received, and I apologise to anyone who
feels that this is not an appropriate subject for this forum.

Getting feedback on an invention for aquarists is very appropriate.
Once you start selling it, we prefer that you keep your marketing and
sales information in a brief signature at the bottom of your posts.
We have a couple of members with mail order businesses who could
probably help you sell something like that.
I'm going to start a new topic with your post so it will get more

I've been posting on rec.aquaria.freshwater.misc for about a year and
a bit now but I've become more and more disillusioned with it as it
seems to have been hijacked. It's so good to find a moderated group
with many of the same excellent people.
In terms of my background. I helped my father keep a 150 litre
community aquarium for most of my childhood and as a young adult kept
a filtered goldfish tank for a few years. When I fell pregnant with
my son I gave up fishkeeping and have only got back into it in the
last two years.
I've now got three tropical tanks - a small 5 gallon betta tank, a 10
gallon planted tank with a few male guppies and a couple of pygmy
corydoras and a 35 gallon planted community tank with rummy-nose
tetra, lemon tetra, corydoras and some shrimp. I am hoping to get a
couple of angels for this tank but I really want the ones with plain
clear black and white stripes and all my lfs's have the speckled ones
- d'oh! Both the planted tanks have low to moderate, but not high,
light levels and I'm not currently using CO2 although I have a DIY
system on stand-by should I find I need it. I've been fairly free of
algae just using the amano shrimp, weekly water changes a 10 hour
light period.
All the best,

Hi all,
I'm new to the group, but not to the hobby. I used to read the Usenet
groups & was on several mailing lists in the mid 90's, but after
moving & giving away most of my tanks, etc. in '98, I fell away from
the groups & only kept 1 small tank. The old timers probably won't
remember me, being that I never posted much, but I read everything;
don't particularly care for the term lurker, though.
I'm enjoying the hobby again more fully, & glad to see that the
archives on The Krib web site are still available, (1st fish web site
I ever visited, & possibly still the best for down to earth, good
info). I'm one of those information junkies for whatever I'm into, &
it's fish & plants again. So many web sites & groups! Like others I
take the info. 'with a grain of salt' & match it against experience,
(& and the Sci. guys tested results).
I haven't bothered with Usenet because of the spam, but recently
subscribed to about a dozen fish related groups; all but this one are
on Yahoo. I hope I'm allowed to say that. Gee, everybody knows
there are a million groups out there, & I haven't even looked up the
old Majordomo mailing lists to which I used to subscribe.
I really like this group. (Hope I'm not blackballed by multi-
subscribers from the other groups by that statement. Hey, I like
them, too, ok?) I see in depth discussions here on, how should I say,
more in depth topics, and a lot of discussion at that. Don't get me
wrong, I get a kick out of the Newbie posts & the same info. passed on
again, but I can gain from the recent discussion on experience with
different types of heaters, & look forward to reading & searching the
list archives about other equipment, etc., although I personally
would not say anything negative about any product or service after
reading about the lawsuits leveled against the folks on the Aquatic
Gardener's list. It really freaked me out! Although, like I said, I
never posted much, I felt like I knew those people because I read
everything that they wrote. Good, helpful people sharing insight &
info. Oh well, stick with the positive comments on the good products,
etc.
About me: I've been into planted freshwater since about 1980. Started
out with Livebearers, raised some fry & went to egg layers. Had a few
spawns. I've also enjoyed keeping 'common' Natives, adding the
pleasure of collecting to the fish-keeping hobby. Small ponds & ½
barrel ponds with lots of locally collected plants & a few comets have
also always been a favorite. Had a bunch of tanks at one point. Kept
S.A. Cichlids for a while, but now have 3 small planted tanks,
sparsely populated with some livebearers. Looks like I've come full
circle, but I still look forward to the warmer weather & working on my
ponds.
I try to keep it simple. I had sort of an 'epfinany' in the hobby in
the 80's, I think, when the 'mysteries' of Discus breeding were being
unveiled. I remember seeing an article about the premier German
Discus breeder at the time, & his 'secret' was a sponge filter & lots
of partial water changes. Bio filtration & water changes; works for
me. Keeping it simple & being on a tight budget, I also try to save a
few bucks, resealing used tanks bought at bargain prices, resurrecting
old used equipment that still works quite well, etc. Adds interest to
the hobby. I try also to remember to sit & relax, watching the fish &
just enjoying them without doing anything. Fascinating to create a
small 'world' & watch the living inhabitants enjoying it.
I seem to live in a pretty good area for this hobby, just west of
Philadelphia, PA. I took a day trip to The Aquarium Center in
Baltimore, (Randallstown), MD & got a few beautiful Endler's, and I
feel guilty about buying a lot of supplies at That Fish(pet) Place in
Lancaster, Pa, about an hour West of here. It's an outrageously huge
warehouse store. I remember it from 2 expansions ago. Bought a used
40g breeder there when they switched over their fish room to 55g
tanks. I feel guilty because there are no other fish stores in
Lancaster, a fairly good sized city, & I'm part of the reason. Search
the Yahoo yellow pages for 'pet' in Lancaster, PA & under the sub
heading of fish you'll find only a Petco or Petsmart, something like
that.
There are some LFS's in my area that I frequent, though.
Unfortunately for me, the best one switched to catering mainly to
salt, but gladly still has some nice fresh.. Got a beautiful pair of
locally raised, (to adult size before selling) Swords for $10.00 U.S.
Although you'd never find these in the wild, the finnage is
incredible! I usually always prefer the natural unmessed with fish,
(sounds boring, but I remember raising beautiful green Swords & love
plain old Danios, & have you ever seen a large planted tank with full
adult size Tiger Barbs in breeding form?), but what can I say, I'm a
sucker for long fin Swordtails; beautiful deep orange, male & female
both lyretail, with the female having a white tipped tail in between
the swords. They try to breed, but I doubt if they can, being that
the male's gonopodium is outrageously long & has a bit of a hook at
the end. I didn't buy them for fry potential, though, just to enjoy
as they are, even if they are freaks of man messing with nature,
although I have noticed that the female seems like she might be
getting a little plumper. I buy fish food & some misc. supplies at
that LFS, too. Technically, it's a pet shop with puppies, etc., but
the fish room is run by one guy who's really good & that's all he
does.
Don't know if this post will come through with the regular ones, being
that it's a reply to a new member thread, (I seem to remember the name
Altum from way back), but maybe somebody will see it. It's been a
really long ramble, very unusual for me, being that as I said, I don't
post much, but, in any event I'll be reading & enjoying your posts.
Well, so long and thanks for all the fish (info).

LOL, welcome aboard Dan. Sounds like you have a lot to offer.

Glad to hear you like the group. We pretty much let this group run
itself, Usenet-fashion. We use the moderation tools to block and
remove advertisements and spam. The discussions are very similar in
scope and detail to those in rec.aquaria.freshwater.*. I considered
Yahoo, but I find the ads too intrusive and Google used to have a much
nicer, streamlined UI. Unfortunately, they recently revamped to a
more Yahoo-style look and feel and I don't think it's an improvement.
You mentioned some of my favorite fish stores. I used to live in that
part of the country. Glad to hear Aquarium Center is still doing
well. That Fish Place (before it was That Pet Place) used to have
some pretty nice plants and livestock along with the warehouse of dry
goods. Maybe that's changed.
I hope your tanks are running smoothly, and that you will feel free to
post. We're a pretty friendly crowd.

As usual, PetNotSoSmart dropped the ball. Your new filter is
developing its bacterial bed - we call it "cycling" - and some ammonia
is both normal and necessary. The nitrogen cycle FAQ explains what is
happening with your tank. http://faq.thekrib.com/begin-cycling.html
You don't have too many fish, so the cycle should go fine with some
Prime or AmQuel+ and maybe a few water changes.
If the article leaves you confused and you'd like more help, please
start a new thread by hitting the '+new post" link to the right under
Discussions. Everyone will see your post and be able to help you out
more effectively. :-)

I have kept fish for several years progressing through varies style: a
beginners community tank, Amazon biotope (including royal blue discus,
a breeding colony of electric blue cichlids and raised a Murray Cod
from 4cm to 35cm. Due to drought here and being on tank water I can't
keep fish at the moment and so I am trying to get my fish keeping fix
by participating in online communities.

Thank You for the warm welcome! I see what you mean about bottom
posting not mattering, & I also probably shouldn't have changed the
subject/heading, being that it's a new member thread, but I guess that
doesn't really matter much now. I'll just copy & paste from word from
now on & let Google do its compression.
As far as having something to offer goes, I actually like the fact
that I see so much good info. offered by so many people. From the
friendly, comfortable feel of the group, I certainly won't be afraid
to join in a discussion if I have something worthwhile to add, but I
kind of like the fact that I don't need to. I don't know if that
sounds right, but when I read posts I find myself thinking things
like, well, just generally agreeing, happy to see questions answered
so quickly, & feeling comfortable with not having to post.
You nailed it on the comparison to Usenet. Convenient to have a
Usenet search on Google, as well, since they took over Deja News. I
know what you mean about the Yahoo ads, they can be intrusive. I
stayed with it for the headline news on the home page, but usually
just find that pretty depressing anyway. I like the Google image
search feature, too. I keep an extra browser window open to look up
Latin names & such while I'm reading.
Indeed The Aquarium Center is still going strong! They still have
that same beautiful planted display tank by the bathroom, along with
several more display tanks. I remember seeing an Endler's livebearer
in that tank over 10 years ago, but not knowing about Endler's at the
time I just thought it was an incredibly colored wild guppy. The
place seems about the same, does a great business, & they still seem
to usually have true Siamese Algae Eaters in stock along with their
usual huge variety.
That Fish Place has changed a bit, (besides the addition of a lot of
other pet items to the warehouse dry goods area). They remodeled &
expanded the salt, added a big pond room, turned the formerly invert
salt room behind the bagging station into a FW plant room, & it seems
that they made the FW fish room a little smaller, but I think it was
goldfish varieties that took the biggest cut in FW. I guess the fresh
tanks are actually bigger than 55g; wider front to back for more
surface area. They also added a big SW touch tank; mainly rays & a
few other fish. The place is always packed on weekends.
Well, Thank Again for the warm welcome! It's a pleasure to a member
of the group!

Glad you found us and welcome to the group :-) Sounds like you have a
lot of tanks so you'll fit in here nicely with other fellow MTS
(Multiple Tank Syndrome) Sufferers - lol
Gill
MTS...I love it. Of course "sufferer" better describes my husband.
When my son gave me the 55 gallon for Christmas I heard a groan and
something about more fish from my husband. ;-) Thanks for the
welcome.

Hi All,
I'm Chip and I live in Atlanta. I have a 130 gallon planted tank with
Tetras, Corys, Ottos, and Clown Loaches. It has been an interesting
year now battling one type of algae after another and trying get
everything right.
This group seems to be filled with good people and good advice, and I
look forward to learning some things.
Anyway, hi I'm Jeroen Wijnands, living in the netherlands and owner of
a 70 liter community tank.
