at the end of his run-up. I was about 50 metres away from Ken as he
bellowed: 'I can't grip this ball. There's some stuff on it.'
"I started to give the umpire the usual excuses of the ball having been
trodden on when he got in first.
'Before you start you can forget about the ball having chapped lips,' he
said."

One thing which used to be done with a ball was leave mud on one side to
alter the bounce. That was a regular trick in Victorian times. Frank
Edwards, a slow left armer of great renown in Minor County cricket
before and after the Great War was notorious for using bottle tops to
score a ball. RH
