From Radio-info.com:

More locally-unique HD-2 channels are part of the "second generation."

Some of these have already gotten attention - CBS Radio's revival of the
call letters of WNEW-FM, New York, and the "Live Rock from the WMMR
Archives" by Greater Media in Philly. Some formats on the multicasting list
being announced today haven't gotten as much print, and the HD Radio
Alliance is playing up their local-ness and diversity. Like: Emmis' "Local
107"/local artists, in Austin. "Indie Rock" on Clear Channel HD-2 signals in
Portland (OR), Oklahoma City, and Seattle. And Entercom's "Rock Independent
Radio - 94.7 Too" based off of KRNK. That means Portland, Oregon's going to
have two "indie" stations competing - at least on the market's small number
of extant HD receivers and then online. Independent rock also wins a helping
hand from Clear Channel's Coachella Festival-inspired "eRockster" HD-2
offering in L.A., Philadelphia and D.C. There are also some hyper-local
channels, such as Clear Channel's "Radio Free Hawaii." While Beasley's doing
a country "Gretchen 99.9" for Miami, CC's featuring "Old Skool Hip Hop" in
Boston, and CBS Radio's putting "Chick Rock" on in Dallas. Notice that most
of these are music-centered and often relatively jock-free. The Alliance's
Diane Warren says "we know from our research that if consumers hear content
they can relate to in their market - and they can find it easily on
HDRadio.com - the programming will inspire them to buy an HD Radio."

"CLEAR CHANNEL PULLS THE PLUG ON SOME HD RADIO STATIONS"

their HD 'Format Lab' stations due to a lack of demand."

This is not a question of lack of demand for HD radio....just a lack of
demand for the formats that were nixed...like the all-polka channel.

(CC Calls each of the formats a 'station'.)

In rality, the formats will be repalced with more mainstream formats.

In other words, more of the same old crap that you can hear more than
adequately on your $10 pocket radio or $20 boombox, without paying out a
shitload of money for a piece of IBOC battery-eating trash that won't pick
up anything without an external antenna anyway..

The HD channels are just clever reworks off the main analog channels -
most of the channels are just jukeboxes and offer consumers no
compelling content. HD Radio is a farce:

Same could be said for the $3K Bose Sound System too.

An IBOC HD-Radio with a Docking Station for an MP3
Player, iPod, or an Memory Chip Slot will be the 'bridge'
for many younger Radio Listeners.

No it's not. It means anything with more listeners than the all-polka
format tha was cancelled.

I'm not sure what "clever re-works" is supposed to mean....
If the main channel is Classical and the HD-2 channel is "Opera"...is that a
"clever re-work"?

I would think opera fans would not care what you call it. (A rose by any
other name...?)

As far as automated jukeboxes.....have you heard XM or Sirius lately?

Whats funny is that 6 nutballs on an obscure newsgroup think they are going
to change the wave of progress.

If HD radio catches on...it will be regardless of what 6 or 7 people in this
newsgroup think.

If it becomes popular, there is nothing you can do to stop it.

If it's a bust, it will be a bust on it's own.

You pumping out misinformation will have no effect...because the decision
makers don't come here.

A Brown,

Actually HD-2 Channels are an "Iintrinsic Part" of the IBOC
FM HD-Radio Business Model -and- The Development of
more HD-2 Channels is just part of the continued process
of transitioning Analog FM Radio to Digital FM HD-Radio.

The HD-2 Channels may or may not be "Locally-Unique" :
What They Have To Be -is- Profitable Income Sources [.]

The Making Profitable HD-2 Channels and Two approaches
to FM HD-Radio HD-2 Channels :

First - A Brand within a Brand
-EX- Smooth Jazz + an HD-2 Classical Jazz
Using : Co-Marketing often with many Common Advertisers
Resulting in Increased Revenues from the same Income Sources.

Second - Two Separate 'Unique' Brands
-EX- Easy Listening + an HD-2 Classic Country
Using : Separate Marketing and Different Groups of Advertisers
Resulting in Increased Revenues from different Income Sources.

However 'both' require Brand Development : Building a Listening
Audience and Brand Loyality where their may already be 'other'
Like Brands within the Local Market. Acquiring an Advertising
Base and Building an Imcome Stream.

There-is-A-BETTER- Alternative : "TV Audio Sound"
1 - It comes with an already Established Brand, Listening
Audience and Brand Loyality.
2 - There is Only One 'Unique' Brand within most Local
Markets : ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, PBS, CW, TBN,
Univision, Telamundo, etc.
3 - It comes with an already Advertising Base and Income
Stream.
4 - Plus Most of the Promtional Advertising would be done
by the TV Station using the HD-2 Channel to promote it's
own Brand.
5 - TV Audio Sound on the HD-2 Channel of an FM HD-Radio
Station is a Win+Win Cooperative Business Venture for both
the Local TV Station and the Local FM HD-Radio Station.

The-Second-BEST-Alternative : "AM/MW Radio Simulcasting"
Number 1~5 Above Also Apply Here.
Followed-by the eventual 'migration of many / most AM/MW

Radio Stations to an Expanded FM HD-Radio Band 76~88 MHz.

Oh, great..We'll be able to listen to Reality shows and daytime soaps.

Without the video ruining the experience, we can bring back all the
mummified game show hosts from the last few decades. They will all sound
better than they look, thus giving them ANOTHER decade or two being
productive members of society.

I can hardly wait.

Mike - Mainly Women at work 'listening' to the TV Audio Sound
of the Daytime Soaps, Oprah, Jerry Springer etc.

HSN & QVC are also two unique Brands that could do well
as an FM HD-Radios HD-2 Channel.

Usually FM Radio signal will get into Buildings better than the
AM/MW Radio with less Noise : So Simulcasting AM/MW
Radio Talk Shows will allow Men to Listen to Limbaugh,
Hannety and Savage more easily in the Office while working.

I used to run an FM-Re-Broadcaster for KGO-AM 810 kHz
and later a second one for KSFO-AM 560 kHz in an Office
Area had a very long wire running in the overhead along the
main aisle way. People were amazed at the fact that these
two AM Radio Stations can in so well while everything else
on AM Radio sound mostly like noisy crap. Only a few asked
why there were hearing them on the FM Band.
-ps- People generally don't ask questions when they can get
things for Free as in Free Over-the-Air Radio.

Plus - I was always was amazed at the number of Women
who had AM/FM TV Sound Radios at there Desks with a
little Single Earphone in one Ear. While 'other' had a VCR
going at Home Druing the Day to 'catch' their Favorite TV
Programs to Play-Back at Night or on the Week-End.

Oops 'typo' Iintrinsic -sb- Intrinsic ~ RHF
