In the past, national shows have been the exception in radio, rather than
the rule.
They’re about to be the rule.
I predict that half of America’s morning drive jocks will soon be replaced
by 10 or 12 syndicated morning shows beamed in from somewhere else. This
will happen in other dayparts as well.
Frankly, I’m in favor of it.
Wait! I hear the voices of broadcasters clamoring, “But radio is local. Our
listeners want local. Syndication is anti-radio.”
I respond, "Listen to the people of your town. Are they saying, 'We don’t
want Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, American Idol, and Lost! We want
the local TV shows?'”
"Are they saying, 'We don’t want Spiderman, Pirates of the Caribbean, and
Lord of the Rings in our theaters! We want the local movies?'”
"Are they saying, 'We don’t want Rush Limbaugh and Howard Stern, we want a
local political pundit and a local shock jock?'”
Ten years ago, radio’s consolidators cut costs by cutting the fat. Then,
when pressured for more profits, they did the only thing they knew to do;
they cut deeper, but this time into muscle. Radio was crippled. Occasionally
they cut arteries and radio stations began dying. Wall Street prices dropped
cold and hard, icy hail on a barren landscape.
There were plenty of heroic efforts in the emergency room. Not all radio
group heads were selfish. Not all were shortsighted and stupid. I’ve watched
from the sidelines as good men and women did the best they could under
impossible circumstances.
Now radio is going private again. Deconsolidation has begun. The age of
syndication is upon us.
Don’t be afraid of it.
Frankly I'm afraid of it..
What do does this group think Mcmorning radio..

Scooter - DOH !
Over Half of the Radio Listeners listen to National Public Radio
(NPR) on the FM Radio Band and "Morning Edition".
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=3
Add to the List NPR's :
* All Things Considered
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=2
* Talk of the Nation

The List of NPR "Nationalized" Radio Programs
just keeps going on amd on . . .
http://www.npr.org/programs/index.html
In Reality "Local" Programming went away a long time
ago . . . "Commercial" AM/FM Radio is just catching
up with the 'Public' Radio side.
PLUS - Add in the Public Radio International (PRI)
'Nationalized" Radio Programming to the mix :
http://www.pri.org/program-list.html
* The World
http://www.pri.org/the-world.html
* Capitol News Connection
http://www.pri.org/capitol-news-connection.html
* BBC World Service #
http://www.pri.org/bbc-world-service.html
# Some 'Public' Radio Stations now offer the
BBC World Service three times a Day :
Mornings; at Noon and Evenings :
BBC World Service
BBC Newshour
BBC World Have Your Say
Point-of-Fact - More Americans are now hearing the
BBC World Service in the USA via 'Public" FM Radio
then ever listened to the BBC World Service via the
Shortwave Radio.
My only wish is that NPR would enter into an Agreement
with World Radio Network like the CBC did and offer a
variety of International (World) Radio News and Information
Programing simular to CBC Radio One "Overnight".
CBC #1 OVERNIGHT - http://www.cbc.ca/overnight/
CBC Radio One "Overnight" Weekday Schedule :
12:05 a.m. BBC World Service
1:05 a.m. Radio Netherlands
2:05 a.m. Radio Sweden & Radio Australia
3:05 a.m. Channel Africa & BBC W/S
4:05 a.m. Deutsche Welle & Radio Polonia
5:05 a.m. Radio Australia, Radio Prague, Deutsche Welle & Voice Of
Russia
IMHO - This type of Radio Programming would replace
Coast-to-Coast AM as the most Listened-To Late Night
Radio Programming; and could easily change the mind
set of the Late Night Radio Listeners within a Decade.
-ps- Analog or Digital AM & FM Radio is going "National".

FCC Data : AM and FM Broadcast Radio Station Totals
Here is the latest FCC Data for AM and FM Broadcast
Radio Station Totals Licensed as of December 31, 2007 :
http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/totals/bt071231.html#START
Total AM Radio Stations = 4,776 ~ 34.2%
Total FM Radio Stations = 6,309 ~ 45.1%
Total FM {Educational} PBS/NPR Radio Stations = 2,892 ~ 20.7%
[ Total FM Radio Stations = 9201 ~ 65.8% ]
GRAND TOTAL FOR ALL RADIO STATIONS = 13,977
Giving Non-Commercial "Public" Radio a 21% Monopoly
{Set-A-Side} in Radio Stations and 31.4% of All the FM
Radio Stations.
PLUS - The [Hidden] Numbers :
FM Radio Stations Translators and Boosters = 5904
Low Power FM Radio Stations = 831
Bring the True {Real} Total FM Radio Stations = 15936
~ RHF
.
Expanding the FM Radio Band from 76 MHz to 88 MHz
would give an additional 12 MHz of Radio Spectrum for
60 More FM Radio Channels. Using the TV Spectrum
from the former Analog VHF Channels 5 and 6.
Doing-the-Math : Presently there are 9,201 Radio Stations
using the current FM Radio Bands 100 Channels.
* 60 More FM Radio Channels could 'accomomdate'
an additional 5,520 FM Radio Stations.
* Which means that the present 4,776 AM Radio Stations
could all be transitioned to the Expanded FM Radio Band
ans still have room for an 'extra' 744 new FM Radio Stations.

Well, maybe if they'd suck less, it wouldn't be a problem :)
I've heard the NPR station out of Jacksonville, when I was
vacationing in St. Augustine. It IS a most listenable station. Not great
morning radio, but a lot better than the local morning zoos on the
commercial stations. Even the syndicated morning shows get a little
tired, and mighty contrived of late.
Whoopi Goldberg came to the Windy, and a highly rated Melissa Forman
got the boot to make room for Whoopi. And it sucked. Seg two records,
blather for 15 minutes. Not like she said anything of particular
interest...unusual given her background. And she said nothing that
wasn't of interest to Chicago. Just the same generic blather the other
syndicated morning shows offered.
Whoopi didn't last long, and Melissa was invited back. Now, I'm not a
big fan of Melissa Forman, but dammit, at least she knows and
understands Chicago, and can relate to us as someone who lives here.
Whoopi simply didn't relate to Chicago. And her lack of success here
demonstrated how important that is.
I don't think local morning radio is necessarily doomed. At least,
not everywhere. And, in time, local manglement will come to realize that
if you're going to have local-local-local sales emphasis, you're going
to have to have local programming.
David Eduardo is big on reminding us that in the 'Golden Age,' Radio
was networked across the country. And people tuned in to the same shows
at the same time, nationwide. But with the demise of the 1-A's, and the
FCC's mandate that Radio coverage be local-local-local, the trend to
return to network Radio as we've had it, is contrary to every stated
purpose of FCC.
In the end what you get, is locally protected contours that are about
Sales. And nothing else.
- In the end what you get, is locally protected contours
- that are about Sales. And nothing else.
DPM -reveals- The Great Truth of Commercial AM & FM Radio !
"In the end what you get, is locally protected contours
that are about Sales. And nothing else."
And HD-Radio tightens-up the 'protected' Contours to
further localize the Sales and 'protect' the Local Market
from Outside competition.
While HD-Radio may be Bad for Radio Listeners :
HD- Radio may be Good for the Radio Business.

I stopped listening to talk radio some time ago. I can't get WJNT at
night and I am approxamently 40 miles from Jackson, Ms and I got tired
of listening to Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingram, and Sean Hannity during
the day. I sometimes get my fill of Sean Hannity arguing with Alen
Colmes on FNC. I listen to K-Love on FM100.9 in Jackson which is good
Christian Radio.

understands the philosophical origins of the USA and how those promises
have all been systematically destroyed by right-wing nut jobs.
