the public health principle of effectiveness says public agencies should only intervene when they know an intervention is effective. A bevy of research shows the efficacy of masks is unclear.

Unclear is an understatement.

There have been many studies over the years that showed masks to be totally ineffective. I have again and again published the results of the CDC page on "excess deaths from covid-19" That shows no more excess deaths from covid-19 than in any bad influenza year.

But the media report millions of deaths. Well inasmuch as there were mask mandates everywhere why didn't they help?

It is shocking that tests that show mask use indicate that the difference between using a mask and not is the same as contracting the corona virus and not.

Some of the most prestigious medical schools have published "studies" that had FOUR participants and claiming that showed effective utility of masks. Now is these the sort of graduates you want operating on you?

Let's just say that if a mask actually worked and the almost universal use of masks, why was the infection rates between states mandating mask use and Florida mandating nothing at all the same between both. I'm sure that sicko Liebermann will complain that not everyone was wearing a mask. So this tiny percentage was responsible for maintaining the same infection rate as Florida with no mask mandates. No one could ever expect Liebermann to grow up because he has no intentions of ever doing so.

Sorry I don't remember the exact quote, but it was pretty close to this:
"From now on I will post only about bicycle related topics." - Tom Kunich

And that same Tom Kunich accused others of turning the discussions to
non-bike topics.

Sadly, Tom probably can't remember saying that.

Lets try it by country.

Thailand where not wearing a mask is a violation of the "emergency
law" and you will be fined (about (3-1/3 minimum daily salary) for
being without a mask, even when riding a motorcycle or driving a car
and refused entrance to stores and shops unless you are wearing a mask
and have your temperature taken, and the U.S. where masks are sort of
on again, off again thing with some states allowing it and some states
forbidding it, and some doing one thing and then changing their mind.

Thailand - cases per 1 million population - 67,171, deaths /1M - 473.
U.S. - Cases per 1 million population - 301,059, deaths/1M -
3,305.

That is a rate of contracting the disease some 3-1/5 times greater, in
the U.S. and almost 7 times greater chance of dying.

The nicest thing about a "kill file" is that you don't have to read
all those posts which demonstrate that you don't know what you are
talking about and thus you can prance about with your shoulder "rared
back" thinking "Ho! Ho! Look at me. I must be right as nobody has
shown me to be in error"

I've seen an unknown number kill files over the years. Very few users
have kill files. Browser based readers don't have kill files. Those
that do have kill files use them to pre-filter spammers. Nobody
filters by name because they're always curious to see what they're
missing. Tom claims to have a kill file, but is using Google Groups
to read news, which doesn't have a kill file feature.

But how aggressive it makes him sound - "I've got you in my kill
file". Doesn't it just make you shudder to know that.

But what does it say about Tommy? Someone posts a correction to one or
more of his wildest statements, complete with evidence that he really
was incorrect and his response is, effectively, "OH YOU ARE PICKING ON
ME! I'LL PUT YOU IN MY KILL FILE!"

Yes, but it does sound better than "Agree with me or I'll enter your
credentials into my Usenet news reader message filter". Of course
anyone who knows how a kill file and Usenet actually work could care
less, and those who don't know probably don't care.

What says more about Tom is that he's apparently intentionally posting
fabricated and erroneous information. Even when he would be expected
to know that he's wrong, he persists in trying to pass his lies as if
they were verifiable truths. To make things worse, he repeats his
erroneous claims multiple times. There's a long list of possible
explanations, but the one's that bother me is that he's intentionally
posting garbage when he knows better and that he seems to be doing it
solely to attract attention because he has discovered that wrong
information gets everyone's attention, while being correct merely gets
him a "+1" reply. It's sad to watch him try to set himself up as some
kind of authority, and then shoot himself in the foot by providing
wrong information that can easily be determined to be wrong with a
simple Google search.

The problem with a kill file is that unless you delete all posts which even
mention some other user’s name, once somebody (ie: you) replies to somebody
who is killfiled, their posts start shadowing up again.

And even more weirdly, Tom pretends to read the reports of "kill filed"
posts sent to him by phantoms - that is, anonymous assistants who tell
him what was posted here. And he replies here to those purported reports!

Some serious weirdness there.

It's been said that classic trolls (we do have a couple) get a frisson
of pleasure when someone reacts to their absurdities.

But Tom seems different. There seems to be no pleasure involved at all.
Everything is about anger and misery.

He's a very sad case. I'd feel sorry for him if he weren't so obnoxious.

Agreed. Yet another reason that few people use kill files.

Forte Agent has a "message filter" feature that I think (not sure) can
deal with that. However, I really don't want to check right now.
<https://www.forteinc.com/main/homepage.php>
The details and instructions are in the Forte Agent help, but I can't
find a copy online. Included is a Regex-like language. I've written
a few simple filters, mostly to remove spammers. See the "Filtering
Message" section:

I don't remember what the name of the killfile is "circular file" or some such, I set it up once and it simply doesn't show me the postings of the people in the file. If someone else comments on their postings I can see them in their posts. Nothing changes - their postings don't become visible again. It is nothing more than a filter.

Agent allows the defining of either subject or poster as the
determining factor in a "filter".
