Hi there,

I have been following along with the PIV tutorials, but i'm having some trouble with the software. When I try to do anything such as draw a mask, analyze a frame, etc. the entire software freezes and wont move forward. All the buttons turn grey (even on different tabs), and i'm not able to do any other procedure, click, or change anything unless I quit the entire program. I have attached a picture of what the buttons and software looks like now. Does anyone know how to solve this? Thank you very much!

What OS and MATLAB version are you using?

I am using MacOS Montery, but I also tried it on a DELL intel Core i7 and had the same issue. I am also using MATLAB version R2002a Update 2.

Hi Daria,
with "DELL intel core i7" - do you mean you have tried it on a windows system, or still a MacOS?
The freezing has been reported before with MacOS, but my hands are tied, as I don't have access to a mac computer. I am trying to get some support from Mathworks, they have been very responsive the last times I contacted them. Maybe they have an idea. In the meantime, please try to reinstall PIVlab, maybe using a different technique: Download the latest release zip file here , then extraxt to a new folder in your Matlab work directory, and then please report if this changes anything.

Here are freezing reports from other Mac / Apple users:

Hi again, I have tried it on the Dell which uses a windows system and I have the same issue. I'm not sure what to do. I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling PIVLab. What should I do in this case?

Thank you for all the help!

Hi, Matlab support has replied to me. They tested PIVlab on MATLAB R2022a (MacOS 12.1, Monterey), and did not find any issues. Their best guess is that your individual configuration might be an issue. Have you tried other GUIs on your computer? Do they show similar behaviour?

I am still having the same issue as Daria. Anytime I try to click on an editable fields (like changing the PIV box size), MATLAB freezes and has to be force-reset. There is no error message thrown. I thought upgrading from MATLAB 2019 to 2022 would help, but it does not. I don't see this bug in other areas of MATLAB and I've seen it over the past few years which was why I used to exclusively use an old version of MATLAB (2015) and PIVLab.

William, I've got two ideas if you've got the time (I know you're busy with your 'other' job :-) ).
1. Can you please share access to the older versions of PIVLab? That will be very helpful for when I use PIVLab as a teaching tool in my course. The online version was OK, but it's hard to manage with large image files. I can test back to the last known working version.
2. I am happy to let you remotely control one of our lab Macs if that would help you experience the bug.

Hope you're well and thanks for the help!

Best,

Daniel

Fixed! Quick updates!

1. The problem is a GUI compatibility issue with 3rd party apps in the background. Magnet, BetterTouchTool, and a wide range of apps (on a Mac at least) can interfere with the GUI update features. Here's the Mathworks link: https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/422244-why-do-buttons-apps-or-the-editor-in-matlab-respond-slowly-or-hang-on-macos . For me, I just needed to quit BetterTouchTool (and Magnet) and now I can edit GUI fields without any issues again.

2. I found the old releases at Mathworks.

Hope this helps people! Easy fix!

Best,

Daniel
