Dear Goshen Bikes Folks,

First Fridays is getting read to establish our themes for 2011. Some kind of biking event certainly intrigues me.  As with all First Fridays events, coordination and organization is required outside of our small band of volunteers to make it successful.

So, if your board is interested and you have someone willing to organize such a feat, let's chat soon! You can contact me via email: gi...@cityonthego.org or phone: 574-312-5677.

Best,

Gina Leichty

Is the bike parade a separate event or would that be appropriate for
the theme? Previous bike parades have been accepted well and quite
fun.

Gina,
Thanks for initiating this idea.  May is National Bike Month, so that could be an appropriate month to do this.

I would support both ideas, a race and/or parade.  A parade is probably more family-oriented and may require less planning, but a race could be fun to watch, if there is sufficient space so that nobody gets run over :))

Additional ideas related to the theme:
Bike vendors selling accessories
Demos on how to change a tire or do other bike maintenance
Literature on area bike tours, bike trail planning in the county, etc.
Contests associated with a parade (heaviest load, most creatively decorated bike, etc.)
Bike challenges/contests for kids:  riding around cones, who can ride the slowest, etc.

Other ideas?  Anyone up for doing the organizational legwork?

Amy Thut

We can add a discussion of a parade to the agenda for the Chain Reaction board meeting Thursday evening. Chain Reaction has organized the Bike Parade in previous years, though we will need to discuss whether staff and/or board have the "go" to organize this again. We'll report back with results of the conversation...

The Chain Reaction board has expressed interest and willingness to work on organizing a Bike Parade in conjunction with First Fridays (Gina, we'll contact you directly to discuss this idea).

Please feel free to contact me if you may have interest in helping out the Chain Reaction board on event organization, or if you may be interested in joining the board as an ongoing member.

Thanks,
Adam

PS -- Check out the newly-paved West Clinton St which the city put on a "road diet" and added bike lanes to...very nice!
