No, I have not. He has posted some on the ABC hoof care group every now and then. His posts seem pretty right on. I do use a Makita GV5010 sander converted to a 4” flap wheel. It is a 5”sander and much lighter than the angle grinder.
Trimming is just so darn controversial. Wish everyone could openly share ideas w/ no one getting their panties in a wad ! LIM did not work for me. IMO if these horses could fix their feet by just trimming the walls, all the barefoot horses would be rock crunchers in the time it takes to grow a new hoof capsule. I do have his DVD and have not watched it in awhile. And as most trimmers, our opinion changes as we learn.
A dry hard environment definitely has it’s challenges. Horses have what you put on them and the ground cannot possibly compensate for any imbalances or delayed break over.
I would love to attend if you sponsor one. Maybe, I could get away if finances allowed. In a roundabout way there you have it !

Monique ~
Have you attended any of Phil Morarre's clinics
http://www.softouchnaturalhorsecare.com/clinics.html?
I was thinking about hosting one in the fall but haven't spoken with
anyone who's actually been at a clinic. I have a bunch of people here
would be interested.
And Claire, if I host one down here, you might want to consider doing
one in your area at the same time so we could split his travel
expenses.
You really need this with your donkeys : )

I had his DVD and sent it off to a friend when I was done. While the
concept is good, I just can't manage the size of the angle grinders
and don't like the electric cords. And IMO, I think he takes too much
off the sole.
I mix my trimming with a rasp and a cordless dremel tool. It is much
easier and safer for me to handle.

Topic: Another Useful Supplement
Patti Woodbury-Kuvik <desert...@gmail.com> Mar 18 01:07PM -0700 ^
California Trace (Sally Huggs, http://www.californiatrace.com/ingredients.html)
is a rice hull based supplement with 175 mg copper, 500 mg zinc, and
Se, Iodine, Biotin, vit A, lysine and methionine. The vit E is low
(750 IU), and would require adding salt, magnesium, vitamin E and flax
or flax oil. Works out to about 56¢ to 65¢ a day, depending on size. I
believe (but am not certain) that she has it made up by Uckele.
Using this supplement with flax oil could be a good substitute for a
horse with suspected flax allergy (the oil does not contain the
substance which can cause allergy).

I made up a chart comparing the 4 mixes. See
http://groups.google.com/group/desertequinebalance/files,
see "Custom
Mixes AZ-CA"
If you know your hay came from Imperial Valley, they are a good
choice.
Most Arizona grown hays tend to have higher manganese; the Imperial
Valley would be OK to use with these but not ideal. I still like using
the AZ Regional as a "base" for these (AZ hays), adding poly copper/
poly zinc to boost levels. You can also request HorseTech to increase
the copper/zinc and add iodine to AZ Regional (there will be increased
cost and likely fewer servings per 25#).
Check the AZ-CA additions file to see what you need to add for
magnesium, vit E, flax, etc with these mixes - they all have different
"add in" requirements.
We "could" do a really complete supplement with all the "add
ins"
included but its going to take you up in to the $1.50/day or possibly
higher range. I think these choices give you a lot of flexibility
while keeping the cost reasonable.
I haven't ordered AZ First Balance for a while, so I'm not sure of the
current price.
Monique - the files URL should be viewable by your clients without
them needing to join this group; of course, any are welcome to join. I
planned on keeping this group nutrition based but, with both you and
Courtney here, we've got two hoof gurus to answer hoof questions for
us.

Okay, here it goes ! These mixes are formulated to be fed with Imperial
Valley Bermuda hay only ! To be fed w/ approximately 16 lbs. of hay. If you
are feeding more or less please adjust the amount of mix you are feeding.
These are both flax based mixes. Store in a cool, dry place.
CP120708 :
The original mix you had me do will be priced $113.95/25#’s (100
servings) and $176.95/40#’s (160 servings).
Selenium 2mg
Biotin 20mg
Chromium 2mg
Lysine 5gr
Magnesium 5gr
Methionine 2.5g
Threonine 2gr
Copper 225mg
Manganese 200mg
Zinc 500mg
Iodine 4mg
B Complex
Grape seed ext 1000mg
Could you also give me a price on a stripped down version w/ servings
included, smallest flax base ? The stripped down version will be an 80
gram serving size with approximately 41 grams of flax. Pricing on this
product will be $107.95/25#’s (141 servings) and $168.95/40#’s (227
servings).
MS-031310
225 mg copper
500 mg zinc
4 mg iodine
5 grams magnesium
200 manganese
2 mg selenium
20 mg biotin
Both of these mixes need to be fed w/
*½ - 1 cup fresh ground flaxseed 25 cents a day
*2500 IU liquid E 20-96 cents a day (see below)
*0-4 tablespoons plain salt mixed in supplements SALT REQUIREMENTS CAN
REALLY VARY DEPENDING ON SODIUM AMOUNT IN HAY. Most hays are sodium
deficient.
*Forco prebiotic www.forco.com 23 cents a day for one ounce or Ration Plus
prebiotic

lus-for-horses>
http://www.longacresfarm.com/showproduct.aspx?ProductID=178&SEName=ration-pl
us-for-horses
Choices of liquid E:
Liquid E from www.uckele.com about 96 cents a day
Now Foods, E-oil double strength from (a liquid E) www.iherb.com about 53
cents a day
Natural Vitamin E gel caps (1000 IU each) from www.swansonvitamins.com or
www.puritan.com about 15 cents a day. You would need to cut open 2 gel
caps and squeeze into supplements.
Plain white salt (NOT IODIZED, IODINE IS INCLUDED IN THE MINERAL MIX) I buy
the loose salt on sale at the grocery store to add in supplements. Purchase
the WHITE salt blocks or put loose salt in a bucket in addition to feeding
salt. The smaller salt blocks work better than the large ones, they can
chomp on them. Horses need to HAVE free choice salt at all times !
If you are referring this mix to someone please include instructions above.
It can be ordered from Horse Tech 1-800-831-3309

Do you have the "final" complete recipe, cost and CP number for your
mix so we can make a page for it?
Did you give it a name?
This will give folks another option for a basic mix.

Hi Monique ~
Sorry, it didn't post right away because I had to fix a group setting.
I'll put these mixes into a chart (along w/AZ Regional). One of these
will be a good mix for Letha to use with the new hay she's getting.

No problem.I decided to do a stripped down version like yours so it could be
more affordable for those that can't do the hyped up verion ! Great idea

"I've been to Pete Ramey clinic and learned a lot. "I've been trimming
my horses for several years but still have Courtney come by and check my
work. Now I'm teaching my husband how to trim as I can't keep up with
all the horses we have. Plus right now I have a broken arm (ice fall).
I think you learn from them all. I also think that what works in one
part of the country has to be tweaked to work in another part.
