I was wondering about what os the majority of u (nokia 8110) use and whats the best and worst about it
Mine is on the latest gerda and after using v16 kaios i gotta say there is a huge speed difference however the multitasking is spectacular

i have always used custom Roms based on v12 but with the last implementations of the next versions.

now i'm on a v16 and i have to change about nothing on it. i think is perfect how it is.
implemented only adblock, permanent root (bootstrapon) and colored icons...all the rest are secure customizations (removed stock apps, swap and single-sim mode).
no screenshots, and i have to set my apn every time i reboot...but for the rest is perfect (navigation in type1 apps, adding shortcuts on the app menu, speed, multitasking ideal for all the Kaios devices...).

V16 is so far the best iteration yet, hopefully its good changes will be merged with GerdaOS soon. I just wish to have the ability to minimise the browser though (and a proper recent apps view).

I use a v16 with minimal mods...

-- v16-recovery patched with test-keys

-- hosts-file blocking for KaiAds

-- added resolv.conf (so busybox and other CLI-Tools are able to resolve domains)

-- gallery patched for usable image-dimensions

-- swap and cpu-tweaks

-- no permanent root anymore (not needed because of ftpd and telnetd apps)

v16 is really quite ok -- but has some small flaws - even some new ones...

-- provider settings are reset on boot (APN, VoLTE...)

-- sound management is missing some options... (emails now play a default sound instead the 'notification-sound')

-- gallery is now blocking 'bigger' files (they changed the 'size-guessing-code' for compressed files and ignored that the 8110 has plenty of RAM)

-- uninstalling an app can 'hang' the app-drawer

-- some other smallish things...

---> seems it wasn't tested enough - probably someone/we pushed them to release it a bit early...

But yes: v16 is neat - it really shows that they are still working on improving things.

(BTW: the code quality isn't good -- sooo much hard-coded stuff... MCC/MNCs to block functions for different countries/providers scattered all over the code-base... and things like resources - RAM size and other things - should be determinated at runtime... must be a nightmare to maintain this chaos)

I read somewhere that there might be a new relase next month...

By the way Ivan, how exactly did you go about using the coloured icons for v16? I tried doing it by simply replacing all the sizes in each application.zip with the coloured one, but I just got blank icons...

I'm on V12+ UK rom by Ivan, this rom has the last apis from V16, adblock...

I had Gerda installed previously. the Gerda recovery is still there. I only flashed /system.

Speeduploop helped me a lot with cpu tweak and swapping.

As I wanted the power button function from Gerda, I replaced some .js files in /system. (hardware_buttons.js task-manager.js

I also replaced some stock webapps like contact, callscreen that were quite buggy. 

So now I have a V16 with gerda power button/slider.

It's fast like v16, I can go back on type 1 apps with back button...

For me the task manager was an essential tool to switch from app to app, control audio...

And with custom shortcuts (tweaking app-bundle.js),

I get all my needs from the desktop at 1 click distance without launching the app drawer (arrows for mail, contacts, messages, custom-launcher. I also have tethering usb/wifi toggles instead of 'wifi' and 'data', and settings instead of 'calculator'

The app drawer is quite slow, maybe it's because I have a lot of icons.

It's not perfect, but satisfy my needs. 

It can get warm, it gets very slow when tethering via wifi, still ok when tethering via usb

Still, I wish to be able to minimise the stock browser!

And I did mess a little with gerdapkg and gerdaFileManager : I can install apps from notifications, or from Filemanager,

but I get invalidPrivilegedError when installing some apps ("certified" I guess).

the kaios store works if I want to loose time trying stupid games.

By the way Webide is working again! I only do not get acces to 'device params', this one is greyed out, was working on stock V13.

Hi!

I tired V12+UK but had to rollback to Gerda as the option to turn VoLTE ON/OFF was missing and by default it was OFF, hence wasn't able to make or receive calls.

While working out mods were you able to figure out a means to manually enable this feature?

No I hadn't, quite new to the 8110 scene as I got my phone barely a few days ago.

Would VoLTE remain ON even if I reset the phone? Asking because I tend to travel and play around with my phone a bit, hence in the event that I reset it I don't want to loose VoLTE when I'm away from a computer for long.

Well, it remains for me, didn't try switching sim or roaming.

I had to contact my carrier to enable VoLTE, so I believe there are many different cases...

I had enabled VoLTE on my stock V13 using WebIDE. After upgrade to stock V16 i had to re-enable it the same way and it survived reboots.

Exploring the system files on N8110 I have found directory with VoLTE (and sometimes even VoWiFi) settings for individual providers. So it is highly possible that VoLTE behaviour is operator specific and subject to change e.g. with FW upgrade.

--> VoLTE /VoWifi behaviour not only depends on provider - it depends on PLMN/SIM...

My provider has enabled both for all customers - but my provider uses three different PLMNs and one of them isn't known in KaiOS and even many Android devices. (even worse: this missing PLMN now becomes the default for new SIMs of my provider...)

-- the reason for this is that 'Telefonica' bought 'o2' and then 'eplus' -- and the 'eplus' PLMN is now the default for new SIMs but not recognized...

(it's recognized as eplus which never had VoLTE/VoWifi - but needs to be recognized as eplus-like-telefonica/o2)

And yes: this is subject to change... probably in one or two years KaiOStech updates their databases and it will just work after an update ;)

(even on Android this needed an extremely long time and was device specific... doesn't work on some devices until now)

On v13 it was possible to enable through WebIDE - in v16 it's possible but on reboot the SIM is checked and the settings are reset to defaults...

--> meaning no VoLTE/VoWifi for my SIM

BTW: my Doro has at least setting for 'ims' APNs - but without VoLTE settings this won't help :)

With that in place busybox's tools or NodeJS are able to resolve domains...

About screenshots: not in the OS directly - but WebIDE can pull screenshots if you're using the right version...
