4G/LTE indicator

I was using N8110 (stock V13) for some weeks with only 4G indicator in the status bar besides clock etc. Then suddenly the indicator changed from 4G to LTE, no 4G indicator anymore. Now after factory reset, only 4G indicator is back, no LTE indicator at all. Still using the same phone with the same provider in the same area. Funny thing is, that I also have VoLTE indicator displayed and VoLTE works even with "only" 4G indicator.

So.... a little survey. What type of indicator do you have displayed when using 4G/LTE network? 4G only? LTE only? Or sometimes 4G and sometimes LTE probably according to the configuration of respective cell? Thanks.

The answer is simple...

- LTE-Indicator --> 'logged in' to a LTE-Network

- 4G-Indicator --> LTE-Datatransfer enabled

So in a VoLTE enabled Network you would usually see LTE+VoLTE - but 4G+VoLTE when Data also enabled.

(in a non-VoLTE Network you will see 4G - but not while an active call...)

BTW: I myself - with disabled data (because of wlan) - now have VoLTE-Indicator without 4G- or LTE-Indicator... only a signal-stregth indicator is visible...

(could be that the indicator is a bit messed up on the 8110...)

The same here - disabled data brings VoLTE and signal strength indicator only (no 4G, no LTE indicator). After switching wifi of and mobile data on only 4G appears. Active data connection is indicated with little blinking up/down arrows between signal strength indicator and 4G indicator. But in the same circumstances I had LTE only indicator before factory reset... Probably some hidden OTA update from provider...? Or messed up indicators...?

I think it's a bit irritating because the indicators don't have a fixed position -- and there are two different indicators...

-- one for Network/Voice (signal-strength for low-levels, LTE and VoLTE)

-- one for Data (wlan-signal-strength, 4G, 3G, ...)

The Data-indicator is only visible while a connection is active - and 'normal' LTE can't combine with '4G' while an active call - VoLTE can.

('normal' LTE will switch down data to 3G whie a call)

When it comes to the 'deferred' switching -- on my device after enabling VoLTE it needed a reboot and 1-2 hours to switch to VoLTE...

(probably there is some kind of auto-/ota configuration involved)

Before factory reset I had your screenshot no 2 (wifi off, mobile data on) - but with LTE instead of 4G in the same place. So there were both VoLTE and LTE indicators. And this LTE indicator did not fall to H+/H during voice call (never saw "3G" indicator on my phone). Even when switching network settings from 4G/3G/2G to 3G/2G there is H+ or sometimes only H indicator (depending on respective cell). And when switching to 2G only, there is E indicator.

It's even possible that those indicators changed with firmware-versions... or because I disabled my second sim-slot.

(sometimes firmware change-logs would be nice ;) )

I never saw 4G on my device, only LTE. Could be a region specific change, since real 4G (LTE-A) is different from the 3.75G our device supports (LTE), and as far as I know some countries require differentiation between these two (don't quote me on that)

I just read a bit into it... it seems that in some countries '4G' doesn't stand for 'real LTE' but for 'HSDPA' (which is 'H+' or 3.5G inother countries...)

And that would make sense. My SIM is Prepaid with 'limited data-bandwidth' (about 21.Mb/s)

-- so it seems quite possible that 'VoLTE+4G' indicators on my Display is for 'LTE-Network, LTE-Voice - but HSDPA-Data'...

(which would mean that a 'completely' on LTE running device would show 'VoLTE+LTE' indicators)

I have VoLTE but the phone switches to H+ for calling, strange.

If VoLTE is really working - then it shouldn't switch.

But if your device shows 'H+' it would mean that '4G' isn't the same as 'HSDPA'...
(or those indicators are also localized... but that would be really, really strange)

Absolutely correct. LTE is shown as "LTE", and HSPA+ is shown as "4G" (at least if the SIM is 4G-enabled). But this is correct only for 8110.

So the 8110 uses the 'US-Definition'... :D

(in germany LTE and 4G are synonymous - HSPA is 3G - HSPDPA/HSPA+ is something like 3.5G)

But how on earth can jkelol111's device then show 'H+'? - still a bit strange...

-- BTW: on every single phone I got before the Nokia 8110 4G all display-elements and indicators were explained in the manual...

Don't think so. My device now shows when wifi off and mobile data on:

- network settings on 4G/3G/2G ---> 4G (before factory reset only LTE was shown instead of 4G)

- network settings on 3G/2G ---> H+ or H

- network settings on 2G ---> E.

Both before and after factory reset VoLTE is shown and also working (i.e. no fall to H+/H during call) - no matter if 4G or LTE is shown.

Device version is european TA-1048 DS (EU12) with stock V13 firmware.

How on Earth? Because there are customization profiles for different places (on Earth) in the firmware, which are turned on/off based on MCC/MNC of the mobile carrier. If the pair isn't found, generic profile is used.

And yes, these profiles also determine which icons should be used for which network type.

Ok... that's more or less what I meant with 'localized indicators'... but that means it's nearly impossible to really compare what's showing.

To be really sure - we would need a CLI-based check. (logcat or asking the modem directly could probably work)

Strange, I'll try to grab a screenshot of the phone falling to H+ during a call with VoLTE icon still there later.

Yes - I just had a 'drop' in signal-strength... and it switched to 'H' and disabled 'VoLTE' until it was strong enough again...

So at least here in germany '4G' really means 'LTE'.

That some phones are showing 'LTE' must be region-based or there was a change between firmware versions.

(which probably isn't obvious until a factory-reset because then the data-partition is initialized with the new content from system?)
