Great, Hermano, I'll be reading Revista Michaelense, I just saved it to my disk.
Thanks,

Hi Tish, I have completed all the births, marriages and deaths in Santo
Espirito, Santa Maria. I have all the earliest marriages of Santa
Barbara and Vila do Porto completed. If you give me the names I can check
my database to see if I have the genealogy you are looking for. Theresa

Of course I will share. Since I am still in the midst of cataloging my
photos I have not done much with the databases. If you would like the photos
whether they pertain to you or not I will send them directly to you, one by
one. I don't remember and Cordeiros and very few Tavares do Regos... There
    are plenty of Soares.

    Theresa,
Amazing. I know how hard it is to read these records. For starters I would
be interested in Captain Manoel de Sousa de Figueiredo and Dona Isabel de
    Chaves
who were the parents of Joam Soares de Figueiredo. I have Joam's marriage
record 20 May 1708. Joam married Maria de Braga, father Gaspar de Braga
(deceased) and his wife Francisca de Morais. I believe both sets of parents
records will probably be found in Vila do Porto. I have Francisca's obit
from Santa Barbara. MAR100_0080 Joam Soares de Figueiredo and Maria de
    Braga.JPG<file://localhost/Users/Tish/Desktop/Santa%20Ba%CC%81rbara,%20Santa%20Maria%20Marriages/1648-1716/MAR100_0080%20Joam%20Soares%20de%20Figueiredo%20and%20Maria%20de%20Braga.JPG>
    <file://localhost/Users/Tish/Desktop/Santa%20Ba%CC%81rbara,%20Santa%20Maria%20Marriages/1648-1716/MAR100_0080%20Joam%20Soares%20de%20Figueiredo%20and%20Maria%20de%20Braga.JPG>I
included the marriage record for Joam. There are a few words I can not make
out, but I think I have the gist.
    Thank you for any help.

    Hi,

What you have is basically what I have, I do have the descendants of
Manuel Soares Figueiredo and Isabel Chaves. I do not have any children
for him and Isabel Nunes Braga, his second wife.
I have the same info that you have for Maria Braga, Dona. I have Gaspar
Braga as her father, but I have Maria Morais as his wife not Francisca. I
will recheck my information about this couple. I do not have any parents
beyond the ones we both have.

    Gayle,

I also have relatives in Martha's Vineyard, Glouster, Cambridge and Boston.  They were not all Machado's.  Silva's, Rose, Roderick Silva, Nunes.  They came from Pico and Faial to Mass. and then to San Diego, Point Loma area.  They were fishermen, Liquior dealer, worked at a rubber plant in Mass.  My grandmother had 17 children only 8 are a live today.
From what I have found on just the Machado/Nunes side of the family on the Minho site we have so many relatives and no idea where they all are.  I guess all over the U.S. and Canada.  Well was just curious.  Thanks for the info.  Vivian

    Vivian,

No, my dad’s family was from MA- specifically, Martha’s Vineyard, Fall River and Taunton. I have met John and Fred Machado over at the Portuguese Hall in Easton. Not that they would remember me- they were serving dinners at the time and quite busy dealing with a hungry crowd.
Most of the relatives on this side of the family are Medeiros/ Madeiros and located in the San Jose/ Cupertino area.

    Sorry, I’m of no help.

    Hi Alvin,

My aunt Mary (Machado) Bezera grew up in Laton and after they sold their Dairy Farm they moved to Riverdale and she still lives there today.  I know most of the relatives lived in Lajes on Pico.  Mary Machado's father was Francisco Jose Machado.  Riverdale and Laton are not that far from each other.  I am sure if we dig a little we probably have common relatives. I have my family history on Ancestry.com if you would like to look at it. I can send you a invitation if you give me your personal email address.  I do not have my grandmothers birth record but am sure she was born in Lajes.  The other relatives could be from other towns I have not pinned them all down yet.  We do have Goularts in our line and many other names. So let me know if anything sounds familar.  Thank you, Vivian

    Al,

We’ve spoken before- shortly after I moved to Fresno. But, its been many years. I’ve met both John and Fred Machado, although they probably don’t remember it (it was at the Portuguese Hall in Easton and they were busy serving) but I’m not related. When I get home tonight I’ll look to see if I still have some records from when we last communicated. Unfortunately, today is the first day back for the new semester. I’m at work and in between meetings at the moment. I pray I get home before 8 tonight (which happened last semester). If not, then I’ll try to look this weekend. Seems to me there was a connection.

Gotta go. Sorry so short a note,

If you have family from Martha¹s Vineyard, are they listed in the book about

    Vivian and Al,

To my knowledge I am not related to Mary (Machado) Bezzera, but one of my
co-workers is her niece. Rosemarie Bezzera-Nader is an instructor here at
FCC and says that her aunt is a wonderful person. Unfortunately, Rosemarie
hasn¹t paid much attention to her family history and only knows that her
father came from Pico, nothing more. Just thought I¹d throw this info into

Years ago when I was in the navy I had a friend from Dartmouth, MA. whose father owned a farm, near Dartmouth 4 Connors. His family was from the Azores. This land has all been sold for shopping centers now.I'm 81 now so it was a long time ago, but I'll bet that someone their would know the family. Carl

    Gayle,

I don't know about a book of Martha Vineyard's portuguese.  My g. grandmother who was Mary (Rose) Silva was born in Mass. abt 1865-1875 I have been looking for her birth record but have not found it yet. Her father Antone Rose not sure when he was born but was born in the Azores. He started buying property abt 1880 in cottage city, Edgartown, Tisbury & Oak Bluffs.  Because he ran away with another women and was never heard from again or thats the story we heard. His wife Antonia Rose do not know her maiden name. In 1985 our family was notified that property taxes had not been paid on the property left and was auctioned off.  She was unable to pay the taxes and no one in our family was notified until it was to late.  So I do not know much about that side of the family and could not find him in the census records.  Don't know when he came to this country just that him, his wife and one son came here from the Azores. I did find some birth records for
Mary Rose but the Mothers name does not match.  I don't know what he did for a living either. I know we are suppose to have relatives there by the last name of Rose but have not made any connections yet.  Just not enough info yet.  Well someday maybe I will find out. Thanks for your help.  Vivian (Silva) Christy

If you have family from Martha’s Vineyard, are they listed in the book about the Portuguese from Martha’s Vineyard ?
My dad had a cousin named Mary Silva (I have a picture of her and one of her children as an infant) but I know nothing about this side of the family. I seem to remember him saying she was a Morris cousin who married a Silva, but I couldn’t swear to it. Also, supposedly, some of the family were Silveira’s who changed their name to Silva. Gayle,  Does she know Mary Bezerra's Daughter Bernadette Bezerra?  When I was about 12, 13 or so we used to spend the summers at my Aunt Mary Bezerra's Farm in Laton. Really she is not my Aunt but we all called her aunt Mary.  I talked to her about a month ago. She is the sweetest person you would ever want to know.  I was trying to think if I remember seeing a Rosemarie when I was young.  I am 65 so it was a long time ago. How old is Rosemarie?  Thank you, Vivian

    Vivian,

The book is called "Our Portuguese Heritage, an informal genealogy of the 3000 families on Martha's Vineyard." Marianne Holmes Thomas is the author. It was published by CHiP (The Community History Project) of Edgartown, MA. I bought the first two-volume set in 1996 for about $75. Its since been updated. I believe you can find the entire book online. Try googling Portuguese on Martha's Vineyard and see if it comes up. If not, google my name. The last time I did that, the fourth listing was my family's entry in the book.

I looked for Antone Rose and did not find him in the first edition. But, there were also some families with the surname Rosa, which you could check. Let me know if you find anything.

    Hi Tish,

    This is for blood relations:

1st, 2nd and 3rd degree of consanguinity: "*primeiro, segundo e terceiro
degrau de consanguinidade de que obtiveram dispensa por sentença
    apostolica*".

Also, watch for; 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree of licit affinity. It usually
    reads like this;

"*alem do primeiro, segundo e terceiro grau de afinidade licita, de que
    obtiveram dispensa por sentença apostolica*".

An exammple of "licit" would be when in-laws remarry each other after their
respective husband/wife pass away, and or any other similar "legal"
    relationship.

    Margaret,

Here is what I know about the sons of *Tomé Raposo* (who died before 1734)
and *Sebastiana da Costa. * In the marriage record of their son António it
says that Tomé and Sebastiana were from Arrifes:

*Antonio Raposo* married Vitoria Cordeiro, daughter of Bartolomeu Afonso
Sardinha and Teresa Ferreira in Relva, 1721. Since men used to first marry
at 25, let's take 1696 as his probable year of birth. Vitoria died
and Antonio married Maria de São José, who was the daughter of Manuel de
Teves, of S. Antonio Além Capelas, and Maria de Souza, of S. José - Ponta
Delgada, where the marriage took place in 1744.

*Pedro Raposo, *christened in Patriarch S. José, married Antonia de Souza,
christened in S. Sebastião, Ponta Delgada, daughter of André de Souza and
Luzia de Almeida, in S. Sebastião, Ponta Delgada, 1734. Supposing Pedro to
be 25 then, he should have been born around 1709.

*Gonçalo Raposo*, christened in S. José, Ponta Delgada, married Maria
Pereira, of Bretanha, daughter of José Carvalho and Maria Pereira, in S.
Antonio Além Capelas in 1735. It's reasonable to suppose he was born by
    1710.

*Silvestre Raposo*, christened in S. José, Ponta Delgada, married Joana
Botelho, daughter of Amaro Botelho and Francisca Pacheco in S. Antonio Além
Capelas 1n 1739. Let's assume Silvestre was born in 1714. After her death,
he married Bárbara Medeiros, christened in S. Antonio Além Capelas ,
daughter of Domingos de Souza and Teresa da Costa, in 1743, in that same
    parish.

Except for my gggggfather Pedro, all the above information is the result of
a research by John Miranda Raposo.

Hope you will come across something. If you Raposos are from Arrifes, as
mine, there should be a connection somehow.

    Thank you, so much,
    Marcos.
P.S. - I've checked the Almanak Laemmert of Rio de Janeiro from 1880 to 1889
in quest for your José Pimentel, who arived here in 1880. Unfortunately, he
was not be found. That doesn't mean he wasn't here, it only means he did
not hold a position of visibility yet.

    Marcos,
I will include your list with my "Rapozo" research. If *Tomé Rapozo *x
Maria de Souza were having children in S. Jose, it is an indication that
they were living there also. As I mentioned earlier I don't have files that
far back yet however I have the films available to me dating
    from1702-1879-Marriages-SJ, and 1641-1823-Obits.

re your PS, ie Pimentel, thank you!

Great place. There is also a Portuguese hall on the main street there also.
At nearby Pidgon point there is an old light light house. If I'm not
mistaken.there was also a shore whaling station on the coast nearby at one
time. The area is definitely worth a days outing.

An interesting tidbit about Duarte's for you genealogists...

Last time I was at Duarte's (in August, 2009) there were several pictures on
the wall--sort of behind the entry door to the restaurant (not the bar). One
was a "panororama" style--very long, don't know the proper term. It was a
picture of some of the menfolk of the town. They were labeled with names! I
found my grandmother's first cousin's husband who also happens to be buried
in the cemetery there. I had never seen a picture of him. There were many
Azoreans in the area at that time.

If you are visiting Pescadero and the weather is dry, do visit St. Anthony's
cemetery on Stage Rd north of town.
