Hi, Margaret,

The Vicentes I once became acquainted with are thin and of clear complexion.  Nice people, they used to live in Laranjeiras, Rio de Janeiro, but I haven't been seeing them for some years, now.

As to the Pimentels, I have an Antonio José Pimentel in my tree, born probably by the late 1700s.  I know nothing about him, but there was a certain Antonio José Pimentel who got involved in a scandalous love affair in Rio in 1808 and was sentenced to 10 years in Angola.

Oblivion water: its effect lasts no more than 4 generations.  After that, Arrudas and Raposos of Brazil do try to make contact and will be glad to help...

Marcos.

a bit of information and I have had inquires from that. It has been suggested

    Hi!

    While searching the Massachusetts Vital Records, there was a Mello on the microfilm page they sent me. I scanned it and sent it to this group but never saw it posted;

The Vital Records has births, marriages and deaths. It's 50 cents a page that they send you - well worth it to me.

    Group,

My cousin found out her grandmother Mary (Pine) Anselmo was from the island of Faial. A great uncle Manuel Pine was naturalized and had come from Faial 10 Dec 1883 to New Bedford on the Whaling Bark Commodore Morris.

His residence in Faial was listed as Bria St. Cres. Is that recognizable to anyone? We are trying to find the fregoisa they came from. The whaling crew records are only until 1860. He came to California in May 1884.

She only listed the Azores on her records. We can't find any ship records.

    Thank You for any help,

    Pat,

You might want to scan the document (or provide the URL) where this info was
    found.

I don't research Faial. A list of the freguesias (villages) and churches
on Faial are on the Azores Genweb below. Nothing seems close to me. Maybe
it will to other Faial researchers.

    Hi Pat,

I find the wording to be anglosized because no one uses Street and Crescent
simultaneously, and I would suggest the word "Bria" is intended for
"PRAIA". There 2 places; Praia do Norte e Praia do Almoxarife in Faial.

Praia do Norte was depopulated due to volcanic activity...I would start with
    Almoxarife records.

    Hi, Margaret,

I tried to find Francisco Pimentel in Rio de Janeiro's Alamanak Laemmert,
1865 edition. I chose that year to give young Francisco some time to make
his way in life. However, all I could find was a certain Francisco de Paula
Pimentel, at page 45 of the Guia section.

The problem is that the Laemmert lists people by their first names, so if
your Francisco had a middle name, it will be difficult to find him. You'd
have to ruin through thousands of Franciscos to find, say, Francisco Xavier
Pimentel. Supposing he had one, do you have any idea of his middle name?

But I know of a Vicente family here in Rio, and of a Margarida Vicente...

    Marcos.

Hi Marcos, I had a feeling finding him would be a needle in a hay stack.

I have Francisco's civil and baptismal records and they both bear no 2nd
name. Thank you for checking it out, though. I just wondered what happened
to him. If, he made in Rio or went back home. He's on my paternal side.
There was a saying back in Sao Miguel about those who left for Brazil, it
was "if he went to Brazil he drank of the forgtness water". (ele foi para o
Brazil e bebeu a agua do esquecimento).

I haven't had a chance to get started on the Vicente side of our family
because they mix with Raposo Arrudas from Arrifes and Lajedo, Sao Jose, PD
and it's huge. I'm also descedent of 2 Vicente branches...one "blue eye,
blond" medium height named "de Jesus Vicente". The others are "Tall, curley
    dark hair, olive skin"
What a coincidence, 2 Margaridas..(risos). Sure would be interesting to
find out if we have a connection.

    Thanks again Marcos.

On the website as you open up the Ribeira Seca link, it states the authors "Autoria: Paulo Lopes Matos and Victor Oliveira ". Paulo Lopes Matos is the one who sent me the "Rol de 1875 and 1900" from the Ribeira Seca area many years ago. He said that he was studying in Portugal at that time and I was thrilled to see those family names. They did a great job getting this all on the web.

    Dear Listers

I just went on to the Umino site: www.neps.ics.uminho.pt and there is a searchable database for Ribeira Seca, Sao Jorge!!! So exciting. I did some searching and there is a lot there already in some cases less than I have but then I took much from Notas Historicas. This is marvelous and hopefully it means that someone is extracting records from Sao Jorge as they have done for Pico and Faial.

    Happy Hunting!!
