Dear Listers

I just went on to the Umino site: www.neps.ics.uminho.pt  and there is a searchable database for Ribeira Seca, Sao Jorge!!!  So exciting. I did some searching and there is a lot there already in some cases less than I have but then I took much from Notas Historicas. This is marvelous and hopefully it means that someone is extracting records from Sao Jorge as they have done for Pico and Faial.

Happy Hunting!!

Rosemarie:  Do the births for Ribeira Seca go up to 1920?

HI Shirley,

You know, it doesn't say anywhere that I can see, how far into the 1900's the records are going. I will take another look and see if I can figure it out. I know that some of the dates were back into the 1700's and I saw some birthdates in the early 1900's (1908, 11 etc.) Maybe they are still working on them? I know that the book that had the records of  Pico by Noberta Amorim, went thru 1980! I don't know though if the records online went up that far.

Does anyone know the source of the data? Is it a collection of personal
family history, is it from students during research at the university, etc?

Joaquin, the source is the Catholic Church Baptism, Marriage and Death
records of the Islands.

On the website as you open up the Ribeira Seca link, it states the authors  "Autoria: Paulo Lopes Matos and Victor Oliveira ". Paulo Lopes Matos is the one who sent me the "Rol de 1875 and 1900" from the Ribeira Seca area many years ago.  He said that he was studying in Portugal at that time and I was thrilled to see those family names.  They did a great job getting this all on the web.
