Large majority supports undocumented immigrants’ path to citizenship

immigrationmarch Large majority supports undocumented immigrants path to
citizenshipWASHINGTON -- Lou Dobbs' swift exit from CNN after criticism
of his coverage of immigration may be more reflective of the times than
first thought, according to a survey released with little fanfare on
Monday.

Americans are largely supportive of a pathway to citizenship for
undocumented immigrants, a new report by the Pew Research Center
concluded.

Sixty-three percent of the public support the idea, up from 58 percent in
2007, the year of a contentious immigration debate that ended in
legislative failure. The study also revealed a growing partisan divide on
the issue since 2007, with Democratic approval for the provision rising
by 11 percent and Republican support falling by 6 points.

The language used to describe the issue proved to have a notable impact
on public opinion. Support fell considerably, particularly among
Republicans, when asked whether they support "amnesty for illegal
immigrants" as opposed to a "pathway to citizenship."

Democrats are preparing to push for reform inclusive of this provision
next year, and the debate is likely to coincide with the 2010 elections.
The issue isn't a high priority for the general public but it's likely to
play an important role among Hispanic voters, a burgeoning electoral
force who rate immigration as a higher priority than other demographics.
Story continues below...

Scott Keeter, Pew's Director of Survey Research, described the Obama plan
as "a 'three-legged stool' including stricter enforcement, a 'tough and
fair pathway to earned legal status' for undocumented immigrants already
in the U.S., and a more efficient process for legal immigration," in
light of a recent speech by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

"Immigration is a hugely energizing force in Latino engagement in
political life," Clarissa Martinez, Director of Immigration & National
Campaigns for the Hispanic advocacy group National Council of La Raza,
told Raw Story.

Martinez said the issue is likely to help Democrats because "sadly, more
members of the Republican Party – although not exclusively – have
embraced an anti-immigrant stance."

The legalization process is likely to be a contentious issue as a key
plank in the GOP's newly revealed "purity test" for members includes
"opposing amnesty for illegal immigrants."

But The Hispanic Institute's Board Chairman Gus West isn't so sure of
Democrats' commitment to the issue, saying that Democrats had better
deliver and ought not to take the Latino vote for granted.

"So far, the Obama administration has been a continuation of the Bush
administration on immigration," West said, slamming the 44th president's
lack of enthusiasm toward the issue so far.

Both NCLR and THI expressed optimism for an immigration overhaul next
year, adding that the path to legalization is a crucial sticking point
and the Latino community would reward lawmakers who pass a strong bill.

"There are key senate races in Florida, California, and even an open-seat
race in Texas, where the Hispanic constituency can play a very large
role," Cliff Schecter, President of progressive political strategy firm
Libertas LLC., said. "And of course, states like Arizona and Florida will
be growing electorally by 2012."

The 2007 Bush legislation included the pathway to citizenship and other
components Obama supports, but was marred by anti-immigrant sentiments
and sparring from both sides of the political spectrum. Obama, who voted
for the 2007 legislation as a senator, now faces a challenge if he is to
win broad approval for an overhaul.

Hell - even i support a pathway to citizenship as long as the path is a
tough one. But we can't take millions of illiterate mexicans who can't
even speak english and make them american citizens!!

Give them a test like the SAT (in english, of course) and require a score
of over 600 on each section.

I was wondering the same thing. Hell; half the wingnuts on Usenet
don't seem to be literate enough to score that high on an SAT, and
most can barely "talk English good."

If they break laws to get into the country, they're bound to break
laws once they live here.

And yet most of them stay here undetected for many years. Go figure...

You're attempt at "logic" is purely racist demagoguery.

How many illegal aliens WANT American citizenship? As it is now, they
have the best deal in America - de facto exempt from income taxes,
Congress now planning to exempt them from new Obamacare taxes, etc.
Given the choice, most Americans would rather have a path to becoming
wetbacks - given those de facto tax exemptions!

Yet they are completely detectable, but the politicians that you hold
in such high regard pander to special interest groups and keep them
here illegally. Proud of yourself?

The "racist" card is so 2008. It's a new era, pal, you have to
discuss issues on their own merit, and the fact is that illegal aliens
bring with them illegal activity and crime. Statistical fact.

They are completely detectable? How do you "detect" them?

I can't wait to see your explanation..

>
> >You're attempt at "logic" is purely racist demagoguery.

And yet, you reinforce it with that "detectable" comment. Did you know
that, while Mexico and points south make up the largest chunk of
undocumented immigrants, did you know that more than half of all of
them are not brown-skinned? Damn near a third are from Europe, and
most speak English. The vast majority of undocumented immigrants came
here legally, and simply didn't go back. Your delusion that all
undocumented immigrants are brown and got here by swarming or swimming
over the border is based on your racism. It's not reality.

Then you should have no problem providing the statistics, right? Prove
that MOST illegals commit crimes other than being here illegally.

Good luck.

First of all, if they're not paying taxes, it's because their
employers are paying them under the table. As such, they're probably
also not abiding by minimum wage laws, either, which means they kind f
are paying a "tax" of sorts. But most are faking legitimacy, which
means they ARE paying taxes. And since they're hiding, they tend to
not benefit from the taxes they pay anyway.

But then, you're a ignorant, racist prick; you don't know shit.

Being here by their very nature means that each and every one of them

Good luck debating that.

That's not what was said. I'll repeat:

" If they break laws to get into the country, they're bound to break
laws once they live here."

That would indicate TWO laws broken by all or almost all of "them."

You don't engage in debate. I'm not under a delusion that this is a
debate. You're not up to it.

Wow. You should reject your American citizenship and become an illegal.
They have it so good and all.

Oh, wait, wait! Don't tell me--it's that gosh-darn patriotic pride,
isn't it?

BTW, the only undocumented workers not paying income taxes are the ones
getting paid cash under the table. And you better believe they aren't
getting minimum wage, either.

They aren't cheating the government: they're employer is, even as he
cheats them, too.

But most undocumented workers -do- have payroll taxes deducted, and they
don't get to file for a refund.

The mindset of someone that is willing to break a federal law is
easily shown that they are prone to recidivism. There are plenty of
statistics and arrest records that prove it.

You have no clue what I was talking about, or why your response is
stupid. Guess I'll have to explain it to you...

-----------------------------------------------

You: If they break laws to get into the country, they're bound to

break laws once they live here.

Me: And yet most of them stay here undetected for many years. Go
figure...

You: "Yet they are completely detectable, but the politicians that you

hold in such high regard pander to special interest groups and keep
them

here illegally. Proud of yourself?"

------------------------------------------------

They are undetected because they keep their nose clean. In other
words, you just contradicted your own boneheaded contention, shit-for-
brains. People who are "bound to commit crimes" are almost never
"undetectable."

By the way, do you see anything in the above that says "employers"?
They're the only ones who actually see the documentation. Of course,
even illegals can get hold of a picture ID and a Social Security card,
if they're resourceful.

>

You're a fucking idiot, and there's your racist streak coming out
again, even though you're trying to convince everyone you're not. How
will OTHER businesses know they're illegals? You think you can just go
into a business and pick out the illegals working there? Who's doing
the "reporting" here?

Check out the number of those who are criminals, and the breakdown of
the crimes they commit. Most of the prosecutions are for being here
illegally. There's little evidence that they are "bound to commit
crimes."

What law do they break? Please be ABSOLUTELY specific, stating Federal
Law and citing case law.

Betcha a million dollars one of them cites the immigration law and
screaming "Ah HA!" thinking they scored some major debate coup or some
shit...

Again, wingnuts... no one is claiming they didn't break immigration
law by being here. The statement was made that undocumented immigrants
are "bound to commit crimes," which is contraindicated by the fact
that there are supposedly 12 million of them here, according to some
estimates, and people who commit crimes in such circumstances would
hardly be "undetectable."

Aw, duzzum naughty words upset the poor widdle nobody?

Tell you what, bubbles. You get yourself a Sharpie, and every time you
see a naughty word, you take that big old Sharpie and draw a line over it
on your monitor.

Pretty soon all the naughty words will go away, and we'll all be happy.

And yet, none of that addresses the question. Now, go back and read
and
learn something. There is no law against them BEING HERE, you complete
and total idiot.

Thanks, however, for proving that you can't read, can't do anything
but
Google search, and have the IQ of a turnip.

See ya, moron.

You get used to it. Obviously, if you entered the country without a
visa or
other form of passage, you broke the law. However, being here after
that point
is not a crime, nor have they 'committed lots of crimes'. There are
certainly
high visibility cases, but there are just as many (and many more) of
perfectly
legal citizens committing horrific crimes.

I suppose that in Matt's fantasy world a criminal who caught inside

So dumbass Matt answers his own question.. "what law do they break"
proving again, that even morons can be taught a thing or two

Here's matt's ignorant claims...

"Steve, are you saying that the NT 5.1 in your header
refers to your OPERATING SYSTEM?
--Matt Telles
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.fan.rush-limbaugh/msg/79a81af7d0288a0b?hl=en

"My favorite, which nobody apparently called him
on, was that he is "running XP", from the header
of his post. This, I guess, he got from the
UserAgent string in the headers, which simply
shows what program he's posting from."
--Matt Telles
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.fan.rush-limbaugh/msg/0c55603ef82337aa?hl=en

Here's Milt's ignorant claim:

"Just to clarify, for all who are watching and aren't The Stalker,
[windows NT 5.1 in the user agent string] clarifies which version of
FIREFOX he's using, not the operating system.

...and here's the Microsoft Developer Network website that
proves them wrong...

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms537503.aspx#UnderstandUA

"The user-agent string can contain optional details called tokens,
which must be enclosed in parentheses and vary among programs.
Internet Explorer uses tokens to describe additional details about
your computer system."

"Platform tokens describe your operating system. The following table
lists Internet Explorer platform tokens for the last several versions
of Windows."

Platform token Description
Windows NT 6.0 Windows Vista
Windows NT 5.1 Windows XP

OMG, Dumbass Matt must have been reading leftist bloggers again... and
here's the problem Matt can't see for all his ignorance....

If being in the USA without proper documentation isn't against the
law, how come those people can get deported?

Appartently, poor, dumb Matt, who claims to work for Microsoft, still
doesn't even know what a platform token is... letv alone what it
shows.... ....and even after being shown the documentation straight
from Microsoft...

Try getting somebody to read the following for you, Matt, instead of
just snipping it and running away like a coward...

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms537503%28VS.85%29.aspx#UnderstandUA
"The Platform token identifies your operating system and contains the
version number. The platform token in the example ("Windows NT 6.0")
indicates Windows Vista."

Look Matt, the following website even has little arrows pointing to
the platform tokens before describing what they are.. Now even you
can follow the little arrows, Matt.. and even you can learn....

http://my-addr.com/i/user_agent_internet_explorer-and-user_agent_msie/IE_classification_and_examples.php

...and here's another page with little arrows for you to follow.. and
there's even an explanation of where the information comes from....

Try learning about things, "Google Scholar". You manage to look

and stupider with each passing day. Now THAT is an accomplishment,

comprehension
he lacks. After all, he continues to rant...

And then can't explain why I run the "G2" operating system.

Put up or shut up, STOOOOPID. What OS am I running, right now? If you
are wrong,
and I WILL tell you what it is, you disappear from the net forever.

Poor dumb Matt has to snip the microsoft documentation that proves me
correct and him wrong...

That must be humiliating for him.. here is the proof again...

Appartently, poor, dumb Matt, who claims to work for Microsoft, still

Errrr, according to your platform token, you're running windows NT
6.0, Matt, and that translates to either Windows Vista, Windows
Server 2008, Windows Small Business Server 2008... and if you claim
it's anything else, you're either lying or your registry is messed
up...

Here's the significant line in your user agent, Matt... now go check
out the sites I gave you and see if you can actually learn
something...

X-HTTP-UserAgent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0;

That was really easy, Matt.. now do you want me to tell you what
brand of toothpaste you use?

"As the wattage increases, the loss decreases.
I didn't quite believe this either, but was pointed
at some good evidence of this.
In fact, it makes sense to a certain degree, the
lossage becomes insignificant quickly."

had some nasty encounters with the disposal..

You're a liar, Matt... windows 7 shows as NT 6.1.

Poor Steve. He was wrong and now he's gone.

But anyone care to bet that he'll simply welsh on it and show up

Matt ought to be ashamed of himself... Liars never prosper... "NT
6" does not reference windows 7, Windows 7 shows up as NT 6.1. for
instance, if you look at Shook's headers you can easily see that..

Matt's probably using Windows Server 2008..

Oh wait, here's Matt admitting that he has Windows Server 2008....

At work, I use Server 2008 R2. Care to guess at what that shows up as,

What can you say about someone who thinks a couple of posts from a
DEVELOPER blog constitute absolute truth about anything. It's a
DEVELOPER blog; who does he think posts there?

You mean Windows 6.1? How odd... It says...

Oh, never mind...

He's too stupid to bother with...

Proof please. Absolute proof, or admit you were wrong.

NOTHING but absolute proof will do, lying stupid idiot.

We KNOW you lied. We KNOW you are stupid. And now we know you are a

Proof, moron. You made the accusation. Prove it, or admit you are a

You are a twit, Steve.

You aren't a programmer, you have no clue as to how headers work.
You aren't an 'entrepreneur' you have no clue as to how people work.
You lie regularly.

I run Win7, Steve, I'm a Microsoft employee. I'm also amazingly
talented,
I know how to manipulate headers. You don't.

You lied, Steve. You made a claim you couldn't prove. You are a moron,
Steve, you aren't a programmer, because any REAL programmer would
know how to manipulate headers. You lied. You are a moron. You don't
matter, and now EVERYONE knows it.

Poor little 12 year old Steve MORON Canyon. He isn't important. He
makes
claims he can't back. He claims knowledge he doesn't have. He claims
all
sorts of things that aren't true. NOTHING Canyon claims can be
trusted, ever
again.

Jesus, is he STILL perpetrating this crap??

I showed him many months ago that I could manipulate that, and I will
be the first to admit I'm no computer genius. I was using a Linux
build of Firefox on Vista. What a fool he is...

With as little as he knows about computers, the odds are even that
even I know more about programming than he does, and I will be the
first to admit I don't know shit.

<ROTFL> This how the leftist morons ignore me...

BTW, Shook, what is it like to be a "Director" in a "growing startup"
company that is a company in name only? Hahahahaha

When Shook announced that nonsense, I knew for a fact that he was down
and out and desperate.... for who would make up a pretend job if he
actually had something working for him?

...and when the little fool claimed that I was e-mailing somebody that
he worked with, he confirmed that I was right on target once again....

That's from dumbass Tellus who, way back in Feb, 2009, thought that
you couldn;t legally buy windows XP simply because Microsoft stopped
selling it.... <LOL>

I just happened to notice that Comp USA is STILL selling XP...

Relying on cuss words demonstrates a lack of intellectual capacity.
Using them to explain things to right wingers is just translating for

Let 'em go to Canada.

Anyway, the majority doesn't support illegals getting citizenship.
They just resigned to it because they hear it's impossible to round
them up and send them home.

Funny, though, many went home when their jobs disappeared.

Yeah, I know you're gonna get all pissy and insulting because I want
illegals gone but part of the economic problems we're having is there
are too many people in the country already. Our food production is
already at the breakeven, we import as much as we export. We use to
feed the world.

China has had more than a thousand years to get use to the idea of
more people than the country can support. They know they can't
industrialize enough to feed and house 1.3 billion as Americans are
use to. Read up how polluted China is becoming. China can't afford the
environmental standards needed.

America doesn't have the transportation infrastructure to deal with a
larger population. We don't have the natural resources. When the
world's population was smaller we could buy those resources. Now the
citizens of those countries want an American standard of living. That
means America can no longer have an American standard of living. It
will take 50-60 years to develop the technologies to fully support our
current population. But in another 50-60 years, our population will
exceed one billion.

The illegals - specifically the central american migrant laborers - agree with
you, and would much rather be in their home countries. The policies which reduce
jobs in Central America, and open cheap labor jobs here, are keeping them away
from their families.

Matt Telles is a real person, with a real job, who has a real resume.

You aren't. You are a 12 year old that lives in his mother's basement
and
hasn't a dime to his name.

Prove otherwise.

Absolute proof, "Steve".

Otherwise, we know. I tried humoring you from 9 to 12, you obviously
thought
it empowered you. Not anymore. You aren't a programmer, you haven't a
clue
about machines, operating systems or anything else you can't Google.
You haven't
a clue about money or investing, as we learned with your discussion of
Roth IRAs.
We tried to give you a break, kid. We're done now.

You are, in fact, 12. Prove otherwise, or disappear. Because everyone
knows now.

CompUSA went out of business. The company who bought the name also owns
CircuitCity.com, and they sell nothing but refurbished items and factory
seconds. And if you look at the item at compusa.com, they're selling OEM
copies, which might actually be illegal, depending on the contract they
signed.

I've read this whole thread, and it sounds like it's you who doesn't
know what a platform token is. In fact, when he called it a platform
token, you claimed it indicated what operating system was on your
computer. Of course, such a thing is impossible. What you're reading in
the header is the operating system the program in question was written
for. For example, right now, I'm using a Mac, but I'm also using an
emulator program and writing this from Windows Mail. If you could see
the information in my header, it would look as if I was writing this
from Windows Vista.

That's what a platform token is. It's a token used to indicate what
platform the program was written for. It is impossible for a server to
know what OS you're running on your home computer.

Yes, I know. If motor oil could be cleaned and 'infinitely reused',
we'd hardly
have any sort of problems, would we? You get used to his stupidity,
but that
doesn't make him any more right. The biggest problem, as I've

that he simply does Google Searches, and thinks that everything he

Gospel. Google is a great tool (not as good as Bing, of course :) ),
but it does
require an intellect capable of separating the wheat from the chaff.
He doesn't
have it, and I doubt he ever will, even if he does eventually grow up.

Oh, please, everyone knows about him. He's a little kid pretending, at

a programmer.
I've gotten tired of his crap. After almost 20 years on Usenet, my

Well, duh. The gov't is going to get its money. Roth IRA's (and 401ks,
now)
are post-tax money, as you say. If you've paid taxes on it once, why
pay it
again? I'm still not convinced Roths are the way to go, but we'll see.

Nor are conversions from standard IRA's to Roths, which should tell
you
what you need to know. If you pay taxes on the money when you take it
out, it was tax-free to begin with (see: tax-free munis, IRA trades,
401k trades,
etc).

I'm still getting used to Bing, but in my work (yes, I do work) I have
to use a variety of search engines. I like Bing, but I'm still not
sure it's better than Google.

But your main point is correct. He's someone who's probably never
cracked a book in his life. I'm sure you've noticed the disdain he
shows for intelligence, as well as his dismissive attitude toward
anything he doesn't understand; that's not exactly a sign that he's
had much formal education. So, here comes the Internet, and Google,
and suddenly he has all of this info at his fingertips. But without an
education, he has no built-in bullshit detector. It's why the wingnuts
love Fox News; they have no education, and they don't know any
better.

Well, honestly, I was stalked and threatened many years ago by someone
who threatened me and my son, back when he was about 6 or 7. That's
one reason I don't give personal information out over here anymore,
and why most of the crap the Stalker quotes comes from the time before
that. This place can be a little dangerous at times, especially when
it comes to wingnuts. I've had quite a few mysterious hang up phone
calls, too. It may or may not have been someone from here... I have no
way of knowing.

But you're right; there's no reason not to use a real name... they're
just a bunch of pussies who think they're clever. Even if he's not 12,
he acts like it.

Well, they're a great way to go for retirement, because you have more
control over the investments. You can also pull the investments and
just leave the money in the account and just collect interest; they're
far more flexible than a 401(k). But what he was talking about was
switching the money from a different account to a Roth IRA, and
implying it was "tax-free." The only difference between a Roth and a
traditional IRA is that the traditional IRA is tax-deferred. You pay
the taxes on the money when you take it out, rather than when you put
it in.

That's itl... why anyone who was closing in on 65 years old, as he
says he is, would "put all his money" into a Roth IRA is beyond me. It
would be a flat silly idea...

Let's see... he's a rich guy with tons of family all over the country,
who are always coming to visit him or he's going to visit them, he has
a huge boat on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Yet, he spends half his life
on Usenet, picking on people, and spending inordinate amounts of time
trying to dig dirt on the people who disagree with him here. Now, if
you were rich and lived on the Gulf Coast and had a huge boat, don't
you think you could find something else to do?

He's mostly wrong, but not completely. It depends on other
circumstances. If you buy $1000 worth of stock on margin, keep it for
two years and sell it for a 5% profit, your net worth will actually be
lower. I'm not sure what this has to do with the discussion above. Do
you have anything relevant to say?

Nope, what you do is pay taxes on the withdrawal... and you're going
to do that regardless of what you do with the money.. IOW, putting
the money into a Roth does not have any effect on the issue.

The only reason you don't
>pay taxes when you withdraw money from a Roth is because you ALREADY
>PAID taxes on it.

Not quite true.. all the cap gains are 100% tax free... If my ROTH
doubles in ten years, half of it has never been and never will be
taxed.. if it doubles again, 3/4 of it has never been and never will
be taxed

>He's such an idiot. He was bragging about having tossed all his money

Not nearly all...

>Withdrawals are tax-free, because you already paid taxes on the money.

If one withdraws money from an IRA in a down market as I did, you have
already lost a lot of your capital gains... then.. if you put that
money into a ROTH, the cap gains will grow back tax free... the cap
gains ARE 100% tax free.. and that's the whole point.

>But contributions to a Roth are NOT tax free.

They are to the same extent that the loaf of bread I bought today is
tax free....

Of course it's beyond you Shook... Instant gratification is your only

afternoon....

The Roth account has already gained back what I paid in taxes on the
withdrawal... now all the rest is pure gravy.. tax free gravy...
and that's regardless of how high Obama raises the cap gains tax...
because the cap gains on a ROTH are tax free...

OTOH, Shook cashed in his 401k and pissed it all away.. and if that
wasn't bad enough, he also did it in a down market which meant he got
a vastly reduced amount out of it and beyond that, he has to pay a
penalty on it

He said that? Is he joking?

I don't even see his posts except through others, and one day last
week, he SAID that all the personal shit he says about me is bullshit.
He didn't even mince words; he said that he'd been full of shit, but
that my response confirmed somehow that the shit he was saying was
true. He just can't help himself; he's pathological.

That you confirm what I say does not mean that I lied, you half-witted

You have no idea. You may see that I refer to him as "The Stalker."
It's because that's what he's been doing to me for years. He actually
used to follow me into chat rooms and pretend to be women. He tried to
pretend to be me once, but I'm a likable guy, so he couldn't pull it
off.

I doubt that he's stay on Facebook long; he wouldn't be able to abuse
people there.

Who the hell would want to buy XP anyway? MS is pretty much pulling
the plug on it within a couple of years; unless you plan to replace it
in a couple of years, what would be the point?

You're speaking to a brick wall, you know. Six years ago, I put forth
a scenario, in which I'm standing on a street corner, legally handing
out fliers. A nearby store owner doesn't like the content, so he has a
couple of goons run me off the sidewalk. It's late in the day, and I
won't be back for a couple of weeks, so instead of calling the cops, I
decide to haul this guy into court, and ask the judge to protect my
rights under the First Amendment. That was SIX YEARS AGO, and he STILL
thinks the judge will "laugh (me) out of court." His basis for that?
That the First Amendment doesn't apply to private parties. No matter
how many times I explain that it DOES apply to the judge, he doesn't
get it. He even thinks the case has to be filed in federal court,
despite the fact that I've shown him many times that I would not be
allowed to file it there.

In other words, he's ignorant as shit, and he swears his ignorant
rantings are true. He's really not worth your time, except as
occasional entertainment. He's a joke.

As Tom Lerher put it, it makes you realize just how
little you've accomplished in Life..
