A story.
Before the war it was not uncommon for a Jew to live his entire life in a
shtetl, a village, with a population of which ninety per cent were Jewish. For
many, the only contact with non-Jews was when the so-called 'Shabbos Goy" came
to their homes on Shabbat mornings during the cold winter months to light the
stove.
Now it so happened that Schmerel, a Jew from the shtetl, had reason to visit the
Shtot - the big city.
Schmerel was of course amazed by the tall buildings, the factories, the roads,
which he passed on his way to the Jewish section. But what really shocked him
was the small number of Jews compared to the huge number of non-Jews. Turning to
a fellow Jew he exclaimed, "Why on earth do you need so many Shabbos Goys?"
Unfortunately we have our own share of modern-day Schmerels. Jews for whom
contact with non-Jewish business associates is limited to just that - an
opportunity to make parnassa, a livelihood. The Jew lives in his world and the
non-Jew in his, with no more than business passing between them.
Being the source of parnassa for a Jew who uses his money to lead a life based
on Torah, to support Israel, to support Jewish institutions, to educate her own
and other children in the way of G-d - is no trivial matter. And certainly the
non- Jew, as a client or supplier of the Jew, will be rewarded for his role in
these Jewish achievements.
But is this the entire purpose of his contact with the non-Jew?
There is a Talmudic expression: "The wine may come from the host, but it is
proper to show appreciation to the waiter".
The Jew believes that his success in business comes from G-d. But it is his
non-Jewish business associates who are the vehicle for G-d's blessing.
If I receive from the non-Jew the opportunity to do business, to make money,
which I can then use to serve G-d and His people, is it not proper that I show
him appreciation by giving something in return?
On a more general level: We live in Australia, one of the best countries the
world has ever known, a country which has enabled us to have unprecedented
success, a country whose reputation is such that Jews from around the world have
chosen to settle here.
We certainly owe this country and its people something in return.
But what should we give?
As Jews it is important that we realize that our role on this planet extends
beyond personal religious devotion or even ethnic loyalty.

Chazal tell us that the study halls and shuls in galus are parts of
Eretz Yisrael transplanted to foreign soil. It is in them and around
them that we must build a temporary physical dwelling place that is
spiritually rooted in the holiness and purity of Eretz Yisrael. As

Mr. Schumer submitted the following concurrent resolution; which was

CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Concerning the 3000th anniversary of King David's establishment of
Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish kingdom.
Whereas 1996 is the trimillennial anniversary of King David's conquest
of the city of Jerusalem and establishment of the city as the capital of the
Jewish kingdom;
Whereas since this time Jerusalem has been the spiritual, cultural,
and historic focal point of Jewish devotion;
Whereas during this anniversary world jewry will celebrate,
commemorate, and sponsor educational activities about the holy city in
Jerusalem;
Whereas Jerusalem has been the capital of the State of Israel since
Israel's independence was declared in 1948;
Whereas from 1948 to 1967 Jerusalem was a divided city and Israeli
citizens of all faiths as well as Jewish citizens of all states were denied
access to holy sites in their historical and religious capital;
Whereas in 1967 Jerusalem was reunited during the conflict known as
the Six Day War;
Whereas in 1990 the United States Senate and House of Representatives
overwhelmingly adopted Senate Concurrent Resolution 106 and House Concurrent
Resolution 290 declaring that Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, `must remain an
undivided city';
Whereas in 1996 the Jerusalem 3000 celebrations begin as negotiations
on the future status of Jerusalem, as called for in the Declaration of
Principles signed by the Palestinians and Israelis on September 13, 1993, also

Whereas Jerusalem is and will remain the eternal capital of the State
of Israel: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the House of Representatives (the
Senate concurring),
That the Congress--
(1) congratulates the residents of Jerusalem and the people of Israel

(2) strongly believes that Jerusalem must remain an undivided city and
the eternal capital of the State of Israel; and
(3) calls upon the President and the Secretary of State to issue an

(Rashbam). Nachmanides, the Ramban, explains that the three wells
correlate to the three Holy Temples. As the first two wells were
destroyed, so were the first two Holy Temples. But the third and final
Temple, in the era of Moshiach, will not be destroyed, corresponding
to the third well, which was called Rechovot.
When we read, He relocated from there (26:22), the Torah hints to us
that the future redemption will come about as we distance ourselves
from the deeds and manners of the goyim (non-Jews), and thus the cause
of the Diaspora, of our exile, that we mingled with the nations and
learned their ways, will be negated and nullified, and Hashem’s anger
will be appeased. In other words, the Torah hints that the future
Redemption will come about through Teshuvah (repentance, ‘returning’),
which is the opinion of the Rambam: The Torah has already promised
that, ultimately, Israel will repent towards the end of her exile and,
immediately, she will be redeemed, as it says [Deut. 30:1-3]: There
shall come a time when [you shall experience] all these things... and
you will return to G-d, your Lord... [He] will bring back your
captivity and have mercy upon you. He will once again gather you from
among the nations were G-d, your Lord, has scattered you. (Hilchot
Teshuvah, chap 7). The separation from the ways of the goyim is the
essence of Teshuva, which will remove us from our previous situation,
from the abyss of exile; and through which we will attach ourselves,
so to speak, to Hashem, blessed be He, and we will be fruitful in the
land (26:22). <END>

THIS COURSE COUNTS TOWARD THE CAMPUS-WIDE GENERAL EDUCATION HUMANITIES & THE

DESCRIPTION: The so-called Jewish problem of 19th-century Europe was perceived
as the difficulty of absorbing a distinctive religious and/or cultural minority
into nation states that were, or were supposed to be, ethnically homogeneous.

possible and on what terms, whether it was at all desirable, and whether there
might be specifically Jewish ways of entering the modern world. For Jews of the
time, there were basically five pathways to modernity:

In a fundamental essay, Rabbi Meir Simcha of Dvinsk,
known as the Mesech Chochma, writes that wherever
the Jews find themselves in exile, be it Babylonia, North
Africa, Spain, Germany, or Eastern Europe (and we
might extrapolate or the United States of America), they
try and re-establish the greatness of the Jewish life that
they left behind when forced into exile. The Jews are
an industrious people and they build fine institutions
and rise to high levels of Jewish scholarship. They
cannot, however, hope to equal the spiritual
achievements or their forbears.
Human nature being what it is, they desire to excel in
some area and thus turn to the cultural milieu of the
host nation in which they find themselves. Quickly
they rise to the pinnacle of commerce and the arts.
Naturally this familiarity with the host culture breeds a
climate of freedom which inevitably leads to
assimilation and intermarriage.
The community is threatened by inexorably increasing
intermarriage.

Insights on the Geula (Redemption)
from the Weekly Torah Portion

Lech Lecha relates G-d's promise of the Holy Land to the Jewish
people and describes Abraham's travels through the land, through which
he acquired it forever for his descendants.
There is particular relevance to G-d's promise in the present
age, the era immediately preceding Moshiach's coming.
G-d promised Abraham the lands of ten nations, including not only the
lands of the seven Canaanite nations conquered by the Jews
after the exodus from Egypt, but also the lands of the Keini, the Kenizi,
and the Kadmoni.
Yet we see that historically, even when the entire Jewish people lived in
the Land of Israel, that territory was limited to the land of the Canaanites.
The complete fulfillment of G-d's promise will only occur after
Moshiach's coming, during the Era of Redemption, when the
relationship between the Jewish people and the Land of Israel
will reach a full state of completion.
At that time, not only will all Jews of that generation --
including the Ten Lost Tribes -- dwell in Eretz Yisrael, but
also all the Jews of previous generations who will arise in the
Resurrection.

Thus, in our present generation, we are still involved in the
process of preparing to take possession of Eretz Yisrael, to
expand the land so that it includes the territory of the three
nations which was promised to us.

The Torah portion of Lech Lecha begins the preparations for the
giving of the Torah, and therefore for the Era of Redemption,
which will be characterized by the complete state of Torah
observance which will prevail, when the ultimate expression of
G-d's holy Torah will be revealed.

In the opening lines of this week's Torah portion, Lech Lecha,
G-d commands Abraham to "go out" from his land, from his place of birth,
to a land which He will show him. What can we to learn from this very first
commandment to Abraham, that we can apply to our own lives as well?
The first and most fundamental requirement of every Jew is to
"go out" -- to be in a constant state of ascent, developing and elevating
both our inner potential and our surroundings.
[Loosely translated this means to go out to all the Gentile nations and
"suck the milk of the Gentiles." Tavish comment]
But the very next thing that happened to Abraham after heeding
this command and going to Israel appears to be the exact opposite of
development and elevation: "And there arose a famine in the land, and
Avram went down into Egypt."
Thus, Abraham had to leave Canaan and journey to Egypt, during
which time Sarah was forcefully taken to Pharaoh's palace.
Although G-d protected her from harm while there, she
nevertheless underwent the hardship of the whole incident.
How does this obvious descent fit into the aforementioned theme
of ascent and elevation, and our task of climbing ever higher?
On a superficial level, Abraham's and Sarah's hardship was a step down,
but on a deeper level it was merely a part of their eventual elevation and
triumphant return.
The purpose of the descent was to achieve an even higher ascent
than was possible before. When they returned to Canaan they were
"very heavy with cattle, with silver, and with gold."

Just as Abraham's descent was part of the greater plan of ascent, so it
was with the generation of his descendants to follow.
The Jewish people have found themselves thrust into exile after
exile, only to return to their Land and achieve even higher
spiritual heights than before.
Galut (exile), although appearing to us to be a negative
phenomenon, actually carries the potential for the highest good.
And now that we are in the last days of the final exile, we
approach an era of unprecedented spirituality and goodness, for
although the First and Second Temples were eventually destroyed, the
Third Temple is to stand forever, and our coming Redemption
will have no exile to follow.
[According to Jesus the Temple is to lay in ruins because "Israel" has
been cast off and the kingdom given to others. Tavish comment]
We therefore draw encouragement from our ancestor Abraham's
descent into Egypt and eventual return to Israel: We must
remember that the darkness which seems to prevail in the world
is only external, and is part of G-d's greater plan for the
ultimate prevailing of good over evil and the coming of Moshiach.

Notice Jewish teachings do declare: "The Jewish people have found

Here is what Isaiah says of this "home coming" and remember this was written
before Jews got thrown out of the land and had their Second Temple leveled as
Jesus prophesied. In other words Jews still believe this is THEIR future:

Anyone believing that Jesus mediated a New Covenant can't accept the above as
true. As the scriptures show (Pharisaic) Jews were exiled from Israel and their

and who were their "bosses." Notice not one Israelite did any manual labor, it

Remember now versus 20-23 quoted above about who was going
to do the work as well as what Isaiah said in the quotes above. How many
of you actually believe Gentiles would have equal and equitable treatment

If Jews are allowed to call a historic event a "Holocaust" based on Jews being
tortured, imprisoned, and executed by Nazis then why can't Christians claim Jews
had "Holocausts" against non-Jews/Christians seeing how the 1st Century
Pharisees and the 20th Century Jewish led Bolshevists tortured, imprisoned, and
executed Christians/non-Jews. Jews also deny these other "Holocausts" so going
by their standards they are "Holocaust Deniers" and should be prosecuted for
