My partner and I just create an open-source hardware and open-source GUI software OBD-II PIC32 Development Board that can help you fix your car.
It is currently hosted at www.kickstarter.com. Visit our project at the link below:

Thank your for your support.

umm, or just buy one of these and do all the hacking you need:

http://dx.com/p/elm327-bluetooth-obd-ii-wireless-transceiver-dongle-16921

... there are a huge number of apps for your desktop and mobile device which already interface into this very simple hardware.    What advantages does your proposed hardware offer over this existing low-cost commercial product?

It looks like you are only giving schematics to people who pay you $25 or more, yet you claim that this is open hardware. Please see the definition of Open Hardware: http://freedomdefined.org/OSHW.

Hello Eric,
It is going to open-source to the public in Sept 2013 if it is funded by Kickstarter.com.

Dear toorcamp mailinglist members,

Even better than this kickstarter, I'll totally send any of you the wikipedia link with the ODB-II documentation if you give me all of your money.

:)

Hi Eric,

You dont have to get mad.
Think of this way, we spent along time to put the circuits together, tested, make it works
and the GUI software. Dont you think we deserve some help from the public.
We will share with the public if we get some help to go on with the project.

Hi Toan,

I'm not mad -- please don't get me wrong.  I'm really glad you made a thing work, there are real challenges there.

I was asking a real question before, which you didn't answer:  What advantage does your system provide over the existing hardware out there?   Yeah, it's not open specifically source, but bluetooth to ODB2 transceivers are really common, possible to implement with existing chips [1], accessible platforms which do most of what your proposed system does.   They are also really simple to use and work great.

I would be more interested in supporting your project if you made awesome software work with the existing hardware on the market.  Because, frankly, the existing software sucks.  Torq on android is getting close to useful, but some good win32 or 'nix software would be awesome.

A huge board (or even your "mini" system which looks to be 10 times the size of the existing systems) doesn't seem to add much value - - why do I need my odb2 interface to have i2c and ethernet?  I really don't, and I'm struggling to find any scenario where someone would need that.  Maybe for some high-end automotive integration - - I think Dominic Toretto is on the list, maybe he will chime in with some suggestions.

In short, I applaud your efforts, but your proposal doesn't make much sense to me in the already flooded market.

All this said, I will fund your kickstarter if you can show folks awesome (FOSS) software talking to existing (Commercial? I don't care) hardware, such as that bluetooth transceiver.

Good luck!

Hi Eric,

Our board is a development board. It has many DIP switches, so beside fixing car, you can control the I/O ports for your own projects.
The Mini version is also a development board. It has most I/O ports routed out, that why it is larger than other product (only OBD-II circuits).
Writing a software for somebody's hardware is very challenging. However, since our GUI software is open-source, we will continue
to improve our software with the help from other programmers around the world.
The advantage of this board is beside the OBD-II circuits, you can use it for your PIC32 microcontroller projects.
Keep in mind that: we will port our window GUI software to smart phone and tablet operation systems.
So, the real time raw data from the vehicle will transfer through our board to your laptop, smart phone or tablet ether by wired USB or
bluetooth. With the raw data, you can manipulate and display any way you want.
One more thing, with the existing products on the market you are limited to what they programmed.
With our board, you can explore other proprietary functions of the vehicles.
By the way, thanks for visit our project at kickstarter.com

Hello,

Is this project still on? I am interested in the GUI interface, I want to start one for my own car.
Thank you,
Tudor
