Dear Tarquin ussers,

I am completely new to Tarquin. I want to analyze a group of single voxel MR spectra from a 3T Philips Achieva scanner. Since I do not have access to the option of generating SDAT/SPAR files any more I have done a disc export of the spectra from the patient data base. The files are placed in a DICOM directory and are named XX_0001 (256 kB), XX_0002 (16 kB), XX_0003 (16 kB) and XX_0004 (16.8 MB). I have tried to import these files into TARQUIN as both DICOM and Philips private DICOM. In both cases I get the error message "the exact message was: file size is zero". Can anyone help me with this? I do no know what the problem is.

Hi Jon,

Bit hard to say, if your scanner is not set up for EnhancedMR then the
DICOM files may not work. I could take a look if you are able to send
the data?

Hi Martin,

Thank you very much for your reply. I really don't know if the scanner is set up for Enhanced MR. I have frankly no idea how to change the necessary settings if that is the problem. In the past I have been saving spectra as SDAT/SPAR files, but I can no longer do that since we do not have a research agreement with Philips any more. I am including a zip file with one data set (cardiac proton spectrum, probably quite noisy). Your help would be greatly appreciated. ThIs particular data set is from our 1.5T Achieva scanner but the problem is the same as with the 3T.

Best regards,
Jon

Hi Jon,

I think these files are Philips internal DICOM (sometimes called
"classic"). What you need is the Enhanced DICOM 4 format files.
Unfortunately - I don't know how you get these from the scanner (ours
is enhanced by default). If you do manage to figure this out please
post back.

Thanks

Martin

Hi Jon

You mentioned you have 4 "classic DICOM" files, XX_0001 (256 kB), XX_0002 (16 kB), XX_0003 (16 kB)
and XX_0004 (16.8 MB). I can produce something v similar, but for me it is _0002 and _0003 that are the water suppressed and unsuppressed MRS files which I can read into Tarquin as Philips private DICOM fine. The other XX files are non-MRS Philips private stuff. Have you tried loading in just these two files?

Switching to Enhanced DICOM is possible via the service platform, so best done by putting a request in to Philips. However, my understanding is that this will also mean that MRI's are exported to USB in multiframe format (1 big file per series, instead of 1 file per image). This may be useful, but if you want to avoid potential problems (e.g. other software packages not supporting multiframe DICOM MRI, although perhaps there are offline conversion routines?) then it is possible to set up exporting MRS to a DICOM network node as Enhanced DICOM, but leave images to be transferred as Classic DICOM. Again, done via the service platform so best speak to Philips about how to do.

I've heard others describe this as DICOM 4, but strictly speaking I think this is still all DICOM 3, just an add-on which some vendors support and others sadly don't, even though it's been around for many years.

thanks
Geoff

A big thank you to Jeff and Martin for your help. Actually I have finally found out how to scanners configuration from exporting data as Classic MR to Enhanced MR. It is done in the system configuration part of the service application. So my problem with the file formats and tarquin has now been solved. I am attaching a screen dump that shows what that part of the software looks like.
