Over a wet, dreary, mosquito infested weekend, I went on a quick s24o shakedown ride on the atlantis.

For those with a keen eye, you might recognize this ride. It is the same ride I went on in the last issue of Bunyan Velo, however it was -25C and covered in snow then.

Overall comments about the ride:
- The Atlantis is a fantastic bike for trail riding. It transitioned seamlessly from pavement, to gravel, to wet mud and rootish trails. There was nothing I couldn't ride over with confidence. I was particularly impressed with how it handled the single track, given its inclination to ride in a straight line.
- The Bruce Gordon tires without fenders ruled the day. Manitoba has very sticky gumbo mud. I had ample clearance with the tires and was able to ride everything. One guy had 38's and fenders and was constantly stopping to clean his jammed fenders out. I'll still put fenders on, but for wet conditions, this was great.
- Indexed 10 spd barcons wrapped under the tape is working perfectly, thankfully.
- White Industries VBC plays nicely with 10-speed, contrary to reported experiences from others, so that's nice.
- Holy moly is this ever a heavy bike hah! Not complaining, just observing. When I jumped on my cross bike the next day I felt like I was on a rocket ship. An uncomfortable rocket ship.
- The Atlantis looks definitively more awesome the dirtier it gets.

I uploaded a number of photos to Flickr (with a new Nikon Df, a riv-ish Dslr if there ever was one), feel free to check 'em out.

awesome local trip Mark!  The bike seems just perfect for this kind of journey.  Those Rock n' roads are great tires aren't they?

Looks like an awesome adventure. Makes me want to go for S24O.
Yes, the dirty Atlantis looks very cool!

I think that the front rack you have is designed to be mounted on the lower eyelet of the front fork-end.
They are designed for 700C bikes, and most 700C bikes have only one eyelet for each front fork-end.
I have a same rack, and I first mounted it on higher eyelet like you do, and then moved it to lower eyelet.
It looked like a small change, but I could handle the bike lot better.

mark,

Glad you're enjoying your atlantis. Nice to get feedback as I'm about to adventure with my old new to me Atlantis.

What rear rack are you running with the Camper long flap? It looks like my bag man rack but larger.

The S240 looks awesome.

You mentioned weight.

Which bike is harder to pedal along, the Atlantis or the 'cross bike?

Wow that Atlantis looks awesome! I'm running the Bagman Expedition version. They come in two sizes, this is the larger of the two. It is really great.

Oh the Atlantis for sure. But there are a few factors working against it - much larger and heavier tires with a more aggressive tread, heavier rims, a dynamo hub, and about 15 pounds more weight to move along. My cross bike is built up to accelerate as easily as possible, so it was no surprise that they felt very different. Both great bikes, just built for different purposes.

I ordered the camper long flap and bagman expedition from SJS Cycles. Good price and good shipping.

I just found out that they don't make the expedition with the stay's...according to Ben's cycle what you have was a temporary fix till they refined the stainless steel version which is just a large hoop attached to the saddle rails. IMO what you have is the way to go, as it allows a greater load and distributes that load between the rails ( a weak point IMO) and the seat stay's.

Oh really? That is not cool. I've heard of more than a few brooks saddle rails snapping from that. Not to mention the fact that it acts like a bit of a spring. I love this support. It is rock solid and doesn't put undo stress on the saddle rails. I could strap a pile of firewood to this thing (aka I have) and not worry about it.

Yea...I may need to look for an old one someone is selling or have a new lower manufactured. But first I need to just use what I have and see how it works.
