Wow. How did you fair? I'd work through Riv. myself and simply follow their recommendations, but then I've never dealt with that issue.

Did you escape injury?

Certainly, file a police report -- not only for your own benefit, but as a civic duty. Also -- I used to sell insurance -- inform your own auto insurance company and agent. UIM should cover your losses if you can't find the OP's insurance information.

I'd send it back to Rivendell.  Likely they would check over the entire frame for hidden damage, alignment, ???.

Hope you survived with a minimum of trauma.  That must have been un-nerving, to say the least.

I've been happy with work done by Jack Trumbull , the one man operation called Franklin Frames for both repair and a custom in Ohio .  It's best to call him really as he's a wealth of knowledge, he's been making frames and repairing/aligning them for some 35+ years :)

http://www.franklinframe.com/
I would not be concerned at all about sending it to Riv at all, as they would only send it to whomever they contract such work with .  My Bombadil was quite messed up and Jack fixed it up and painted it as good as new :) He has a digital alignment table that is well of course, super accurate .

So sorry to hear about your terrible accident and wish you a full and speedy recovery! In addition to those already recommended, there is a shop/ custom builder in NC; The Bicycle Shop. I have only visited their websites (the builders name is Jack Kane and there is link to his site.) but it might be worth contacting them.

Sounds like took some damage yourself, David :-( I hope you are able to recover quickly, both mentally and physically, from this trauma. Just awful to read...

I'd go straight to Mark Nobilette: http://www.coloradoframebuilders.com/nobilette/

But if you want to stay on the east coast, can't go wrong w/ Bilenky as mentioned.

Riv is not a frame building/repair shop btw, they would give it to whomever they contract with to do such work.

+1 on Patrick’s comments.

First, wishes for a speedy and complete recovery for you, David, and the SimpleOne , too.

Second, I too hope the driver is caught and held responsible for his arrogance and cowardice.  It is hard to be forgiving of the car in bike vs. car accidents, but possible, at least in some cases.  When the car and driver run away, zero tolerance.

Oh. My.

David, first of all I am glad you are still with us.  If you have the energy to do so, try to get the word out to local papers, tv, media.  Hopefully, someone saw something.  Heal quickly and all good thoughts your way.

Secondly, it's amazing how little apparent damage occurred to the frame. Seat stays bent at the thinnest place, and a destroyed wheel, but seemingly little else.  A good framebuilder (RBW may just direct you to someone nearby - call 'em when you are able) (and after the local media gets similar images to use) will look at alignment of the frame as well as checking for stresses near the lugs.

Be well and best wishes,

I second the Mark Nobilette comment. He did (does?) Riv customs for years and I've handled a few of his own frames recently, truly beautiful work.

Yikes!  Threads like this freak me out, i've been off the bike most of the winter (training for something else), and i'm a little worried about my on-bike awareness on the road.  The fact that more experienced people then me are at risk only scares me more!

Heal fast, and know that the bike can be repaired or replaced but your health is many orders of magnitude more important, so take care of that first.  The bike will be there and even though it's discontinued there are enough SimpleOnes and QBs around that you can find a replacement if need be, so don't fret over that.

What everyone else said-    get well soon.     You seem to be bouncing right back mentally, with looking into getting the S.O. fixed right away.   In light of that I think it's a great idea to get that bike fixed soon.  It may help your spirit to see it back in shape as you heal too.

I will speak from actual experience, although the driver stopped. My Bleriot was crunched: http://lynnerides.blogspot.com/2013/01/well-this-year-started-off-with-bang.html

A framebuilder friend of mine said it was repairable. I'd have sent it to him, but his lead time was pretty long. I called Rivendell, to see what they thought. They sent me off to Steve Rex, sold me a new fork, sent the new decals to Steve, and eventually I got to pick a new frame color. I am on the West Coast.

And here it is, better than new: https://www.flickr.com/photos/lynnefitz/sets/72157634204220895/

Bilenky did the original installation of the couplers, back in 2007; I'd recommend them as well.

I hope you mend quickly and without complications.

I'm glad you're mostly intact.  If you recall the details of the hit and run, I would be interested in hearing them.  I have been hit several times, but never H&R'd.

Take it easy with the recovery.  I had a hip replaced a few years ago due an incident, and it took me significantly longer to get full recovery than was typical for scheduled hip replacement surgery.  I don't know if that's common, due to the trauma, or what, but it was my experience (I was fortunate in that it was a relatively low-speed event, and the rest of the damage was confined to my ankle and elbow.).

Please, do well and read lots of amusing things.  Let us know where you're located and where your tastes in literature lie--I (for one) may be able to forward a book or two!

It's sounding pretty positive for that happening from what you shared.
I hope your pain during recovery is minimal.

I expect most if us think about something like this could happen to us.

Riding defensively is on my mind a lot as I am sure on all you folks minds as well.

Even with that mindset the inattentive, distracted or impaired driver's are out there and sometimes even all our precautions do not prevent something like this from happening.

I also hope this person is discovered and held accountable for what they have done.

I got H&R'd in the CAR and I followed the person to their place of residence.  When I called 911 the police asked if anyone was injured and I said NO, they then proceeded to tell me that all units in my sector were deployed on higher priority calls.

I was riding to work early on last Friday morning. My usual route. Nothing unusual at all precipitating the event. I have no memory of the event itself. What I know I have pieced together from eyewitness reports and police reports.

I was traveling around ten mph up a hill on a arterial road that is labeled at 35mph. A Ford Winstar came up behind me moving higher than 55 mph. Though there was a clear lane he could have moved into, he instead plowed through me as if I was not there. Eyewitnesses state he carried my body on his hood and partially embedded in his windshield approximately 90 feet before coming to a stop and allowing my body to fall off his vehicle. This was directly in front of a very busy city bus stop with eyewitnesses that are used to seeing me every day pass this bus stop on my bicycle. He then changed lanes to not run me directly over as he sped away.

He later reported an incident in which he said the damages to his car were caused by boxes falling off a truck. Of course modern forensics and on-the-ball police officers knew better and immediately arrested him.

That's truly horrible; both your experience in being hit and the bad actor's behavior after the collision.  I expect that (assuming the driver was insured) there should be no problems in your being fully compensated to the limit of his policy--but I do not know the company or the locale, so don't take my word for it.  Document absolutely everything insofar as you can.  Every cut, scrape, and bruise.  The hospital records are important, but so is whatever you can produce.  And (like a zillion people haven't already told you this!) take your time getting back to work and riding.

David:

It is encouraging to read that both the rider and the ride are heavily banged up but both are fixable and share good prospects for travelling together again.  Best wishes on your recovery and successfully repairing the RBW.

So sorry to hear of your accident, David.  What a horrible experience.  Glad to hear you have such strong support and that you are focusing so strongly on the positives.  Wishing you quick and complete healing.

God bless you, David! I will be praying for you and your family.
Don't worry about the bike. You can always buy another bike. But the world will never have another David Spranger! So I am glad you are on your way to recovery! May it be speedy and full!

Wow. That person is not good. Deep breath. In. Out. Slow. Nice of them to go around you after they slid you off the hood?
I'm really glad you're recovering, and that your morale is so good!

Wow.  Just wow.  I am so very glad that you are still alive.  I would guess that more times than not, an accident like you describe would be fatal to the cyclist.  He left you for dead pretty much.

There's nothing I can say about this motorist that would not violate the spirit of this email list.  I just hope this results in a long prison sentence for him. And whatever happens there, well too bad so sad.

Thanks, Andy. One day at a time. While in the hospital I was busting to get out. I have a vague memory of telling my boss I was ready to get back to work right away. Now that I am home, I am realizing how long this is going to take and, frankly, happy for the extra time to recuperate and reflect.

David,
Don't rush it. Take it easy, and know that all of the easy-taking is exactly what should happen. Work can wait! (5 years ago I had a minor concussion and needed 3 weeks when I initially thought I only needed one or less.)

Rest well!

Take it easy--that's the only advice I can give.  It took me a long time to recover from hip replacement, though I think the time may have been stretched by the trauma, and I had no head injuries and only minor other fractures.  Take it easy, enjoy life as much as you can, and contemplate a customized bicycle...
