So over the past few years I have bought, sold and given away many bikes, including many ribs, with the idea that I could get down to one bike which led to ordering a MAP custom rando which combined my love of 650b and low trail handling....

however one bike just wasn't going to cut it and I had also accumulated quite a parts stash and so I then ordered an ANT single speed 700cx lightweight road bike for commuting and short training rides.

But I still had parts to hang and wanted to try and go car free and really wanted a rivendell again as I wished that I had not sold at least two of them, so I ordered the ultimate car replacement .... A semi custom 52cm single top tube, flat black Bombadil, which just arrived today! The price on a single top tube is in the Hilsen range.

Build kit has been assembeld, a 40/26 sugino crank,
phil wood freewheel hub 6sp Regina freewhell laced to a synergy rim (zero dish), dyno front hub and vintage suntour touring derailleurs.

I also have two cockpits, albas and noodles, with davinci cable splitters, I also have a moustache cockpit but not sure I'm crazy about those.

I feel complete....for now....I have multiple frames boxed and ready for sale, (let me know if you are interested in a double top tube 56cm Hillborne) Parts ready to post on ebay, an auto share program to join and a car to sell, hopefully I'll raise enough money to fund a frame building class without resorting to selling any of my now 3 beloved bikes which I hope to keep for a very long time. First bike trip is in 3 weeks and will be a multi model train s48 20 (sub 48hr 2 overnight) trip.

Should be a great bike when built up!

Pretty sweet n=3 setup! :).

What will your first self built frame be?

I am thinking a 650b single speed cyclocross style bike would be super fun

That's cool!  Kind of a Rawland-surly rough stuff SS... Disc brakes?

I'm covered on the bike front and oh so wish I could realistically bike commute but 40 miles RT is just too much. I saw that frame hanging at Riv and heard some comments along with corner mouth drool. Look forward to the build. Go tough & rough night rider.

Awesome Trevor,

How did they do the matt black finish? Wet paint or powder coat? And: is there a clear coat on it as well? Decals under the clear coat or on top? I love the matt or semi-matt look -- my first "adult" bike was semi-matt black --- a '95 Stump Jumper Comp -- still mourned after being pinched off my front porch one night. I also have a VO Polyvalant MK.1, which, is semi-matt black. The VO is a Taiwanese frame and probably a powder coat. The decals are on top --- the metal "matrix" (ha!) Stumpy likely was, too, come to think about it

Any details you can share would be greatly appreciated … jsk

Hugh, I'm 58 years old and RT commute 35 miles a day, 5 days a week, on my Sam Hillborne; year round.  Sometimes, when I'm lucky, I get to incorporate a side trip downtown which brings my total upwards of 60 smiles :>)  These are great days because I get a whole different experience.

I don't mean to steer this thread off topic.  I only intend to offer encouragement to Hugh and anyone else who may be in the same situation.  Instead of looking at bicycle commuting as all or nothing deal ... maybe you could incorporate a commute just 1, 2 or 3 times a week.  Believe me, you won't be disappointed !!!

Matt,

Thanks for the encouragement...I  work a swing shift and this week i've been working 12 hour days getting off work at 2am. I work with my hands for a living so sometimes just am too tired for the return. Plus the climb home is near 2000'. I've toyed with doing the commute a few days a week. We'll see how it goes.

+1. I commuted 30 m rt 3-4 times a week for many years, often extending it to 35 or 40 miles, and I did this mostly on fixed gears with hills and winds and loads. My two pieces of advice would be: first, take it easy. I always pushed myself too hard which got tiresome in more ways than one as I got older. Second, don't start out rushed in the morning. Easier said than done, for me, but an extra 15 minutes to spare is a wonderful thing in the morning.

In the last couple of years I'd ride the 15-16 miles in and then ride 7 miles back to the University express bus stop and catch a ride the rest of the way, being dropped off a block or two from home. There were also inbound bike+bus options.

Jeffrey, I did not actually confirm details with Kevin on the paint I simply picked a color and told him the intended use of the bike, from inspecting the bike, I am pretty confident is that it is a wet paint application with a clear coat (matte as well) and the decals are under the clear coat

Re other bikes, I have a new cycles toussaint 650b frame with diacompe brakes post mounted, a built up all city nature boy, and then a vintage jo routens frame 700c frame. and complete vintage build kit and brand new hubs and rims to be built up. The nature boy and jo routens will be tough to part with, don't know why as I don't need them but still.

My commute is small compared to the rest, I am only 10 miles round trip and it's mostly flat, one way travel time is 20 minutes by bike, 30 minutes by car, and 40 minutes by public transit. Going by bike is a no brainier.
