Hi there!

Been lurking a while enjoying the discussion.  I'm going to be going to look at a used Atlantis frame/fork tomorrow morning, reported to be a 64cm and built for 700C wheels... looking at Riv's site it looks like that isn't a standard size, at least anymore.  My PBH is 92, 6' tall... might be a bit of a stretch for me so I'll have to see it in person.  The prospect of maybe owning one of these fine frames is pretty cool.  Can anyone fill me in on the 64cm size...?  Anyway, hopefully the seller measured 'large' or I shrink a bit tonight... :)  We'll see!

Welcome.

I think the sizes and offerings have varied over time, but the 64 has been around for a while.  I also thing Riv tried to stop offering the 64, but that didn't last long.  I don't have an Atlantis but my 90 pbh is just fine on 62cm Ram & Saluki.  I've ridden a 64 and found it OK as far as reach and stand over went.  I don't ride real hi bars so the 62 works a little better for me.  Good luck with the buy, used 64 Atlantis is hard to come by; I know because I tried for a couple of years.

It's a phenomenal bike. I hope it fits you. 92 cm PBH says it might. Mine is about 92.5, and my 64 cm Atlantis is good for me. I am 6'4" though, with a very long torso. The 4" different in our heights is a bit surprising. Seat to handlebar horizontally will be an interesting dimension. My very long torso is well served by my Atlantis's 62 cm top tube. In 2001, that's how long they were. It is possible that the bike you are going to see will have just a 60 cm top tube. Rivendell changed the Atlantis's top tube length sometime between 2001 and 2007.

Hopefully you'll get to ride it, and see how reach to the bars feels for you - ah, just read that it's frame/fork, I'm guessing that means no test ride? That's a bit tougher. Well, at least bring a tape measure and know if you are looking at the 60 cm or 62 cm top tube version. I'm tempted to say the 62 cm one would be a stretch and that you could make the 60 cm version work, but I don't know you or your situation well enough to make that claim.

BTW, if you have no intention of using drop bars and every intention of using Bosco bars, then a long top tube is not as much of a problem.

I have 2 Atlantis brochures with geometry charts.  Neither brochure is dated.  On the 64 cm frame size, one lists a TT length of 60, and PBH range of 89.5 to 94, and saddle height of 80 to 84.  The other has the same 60 cm TT length but PBH range of 90 to 96 and saddle height of 80 to 85. 

For the 61, the tt is 59; PBH range of either 85.5 to 90 or 87 to 93, & saddle height of 76 to 80 or 77 to 82. 

I got my Atlantis in early 03 so the info I have is earlier, likely 02 or late 01.  My Atlantis is a 58, with tt of 58.5, & I'm 5'-11" with a 85 PBH.  Rivendell said I could ride either a 58 or 61 & I love my 58. 

Something to consider is your current bike.  If it's comfortable, that's a decent baseline as to work from.

Doug's info indicates that they changed the top-tube from 62 cm to 60 cm pretty early on. But my 2001 64 cm model definitely has a 62 cm top tube so make sure you measure just so you know what you're getting. (62 cm was also the listed TT length in the original geometry charts printed in the Rivendell Reader.)

What an amazing bunch of responses!  Thanks guys.  

So I'm now a Rivendell owner!!!  I met the guy and was able to check the standover height using a pair of 700c wheels he had (not included in the deal).  I didn't have any 700c with 135mm rear spacing.  I just clear the top tube with the ~35mm tires he was sporting.  The top tube and seat tube lengths feel pretty good, very similar to my Trek 715 actually so I think it's more a matter of stand over height.  Going to have to start the components hunt!  I might throw out a trade offer to see if there are any 62's out there someone feels is one size to small.  I'll post some pictures and further observations later tonight.

Couple shots of the frame as purchased...  I'm still pretty much in shock that I've got an Atlantis in the garage.  I went ahead and emailed Riv with some sizing questions, hope to get some feedback from them to help guide my decision as well.  As it turns out the raw #'s are really similar to my Trek 715 which is also a 64, she sits a bit lower due to a 650B conversion though and I would intend the Atlantis to wear some bigger rubber as well as get off-road more often.  So we'll see.

Just so my Trek doesn't get to jealous I threw a couple shots of her in as well...  I'm thinking that if the Atlantis is here to stay I'd set them up to compliment each other;

Atlantis - Fat Tired 700C, Upright - Albatross + B67

Trek - Fat Tired 650B(42mm hetre's), Road/rando - Noodle bars... STI eventually replacing bar ends...  maybe.

Then again, with fat tired covered it might make better sense to go back to 700C on the Trek. That is a depressing thought given how much time I've put into getting the 650B to work.  Who knows, fun things to ponder.  Time to crash so I can make my 0630 ride-to-coffee on time.

Congratulations on your new bike.  Depending on how fat tired you intend to go, it may be a teensy bit too tight but you'll never know until you try.  As Jim mentions, a 64 for 61 trade is also possible.  Rivendells are sort of like money in the bank that way, and lots more fun.  Since you mention it feels similar to your current bike, the adaptation won't take long, once you get the parts sorted out. 

I can see a few "WTB" posts from you in the coming weeks.  Treat yourself to a set of Hands on Wheels from Rich for starters.  Pricey?  Sure, but you'll get the real deal for what you want to do with the bike.

Awesome score Tony.    Like others have said a trade for a 61 could probably be found without much trouble, but then again the Atlantis has a low BB and a slacker ST angle, so even with fat tires you might end up fitting fine on it.   Either way you are definitely in the ballpark so enjoy!

Doug - I think you're right about the WTB posts!  Wheels are the first priority... might have to settle for some economy ones right off though.  The 'treat' was the frame itself in this case!! :)  In the end though I think I'll try building up the wheels myself, I did the 650B wheels on my Trek over the winter 'under supervision' from a mechanic buddy.  I think I'd be ok doing it again and having him check my work, definitely not as fast and (I'm sure) amazing as a Rich-built set but I like getting my hands dirty!

Matt - Thanks, I'm going to wait and talk to Riv this week and begin sourcing some components in the meantime... I volunteer at a local Bike Co-Op so I may be able to get some starter wheels hooked up for very little.

The Handspun wheels available through QBP are a good inexpensive option. Have a rear on my Hillborne and it has been doing a fine job supporting my excessive weight.

Handspun wheels are priced very well... that might be the right way to go right off the bat.  I'll have to check in at the co-op first to see if there are any used but tune-able set's available.

Any Atlantis/Hunq riders out there that throw 29er tires on occasion? I'd be curious if there are any rim recommendations, 36 hole, heavy duty types that would do year-round commuting (paved) and some weekend off-road activity... on a 250lb guy!

A few thoughts:  I'm 6'3" with a 91pbh, short torsoed.  I would have "fit" on a 64c but chose a 62c for a couple of reasons:  the top tube was slightly shorter and fit by reach better and I wanted a bit more stand over.  If you've done any challenging off-loading, you'll have experienced the need to hop off the pedals and touch down on uneven ground.  If the bike is on ground higher than where your feet land, a bit more standover can be more uh..... accommodating?  I'm also running 40c tires so that adds to the equation somewhat.  On the road or light duty trails it's less of an issue.  I think in the end what you'll be comfortable on depends on your riding needs will be.

Given what's been shared on this thread, I'd be inclined to look for a trade for a 62c.

I'm 6'-2" with a PBH of 90" and ride a 62 Hunqapillar (no idea how that compares to the Atlantis). I do a significant amount of pretty technical single track and I love the frame at this size. Not too big, not too small. I wouldn't want it any bigger for testicular reasons, and and smaller for ride and feel and stiffness reasons. I have two fingers worth of room in stand over height at the middle of the TT.

I actually didn't know I'd be doing this much singletrack or that I'd even be able to ride single track except the gentle stuff. I talked with Grant and described the types of riding I wanted to do despite brain injury and constant neurological vertigo since 2002. Essentially I said I want to ride everything and be able to tour doing it, oh, and I want this to be the last bike I buy my entire life (I'm early 40's now). Grant said Hunqapillar.

I'd talk with Grant and share what you want to do. I suspect the off pavement touring and possible single track touring is what had Grant steer me to the Hunqapillar over the Atlantis (plus price and availability too).

Well now that the introductions are complete I guess I need to start contemplating my build!!!  Based on parts I've got lying around I'm planning an interim, minimal-investment build to get me riding and figure out my priorities.  I'd love to hear feedback on it!

64cm Atlantis (unless a trade comes through for a 60-62 size)

Stem - Nitto Dirt Drop

H-bars - Original Moustache, friction bar-ends, (need some road levers) / I've also got a pair of noodle bars ready as an alternative

Seatpost - SR long set-back model that came with the frame

Seat - Brooks B67, black

Pedals - needed... love my 'grip kings' on the Trek, probably ordering another pair

Brakes - Tektro 720 Canti's (black... unfortunately)

Crankset - TA triple (came with frame)

Front Derailleur - needed...

Rear Derailleur - Deore DX RD-M650 (old long cage originally for 7 speed SIS... think it will handle 8 or 9 speed friction?)

Cassette/FW - needed, wheelset dependant

Wheels - NEEDED... biggest hole.  First option is to source on from my local co-op or the community of guys who belong there, second option will be a 'value set' from Handspun wheels via QBP (thanks Eric!)

Tires - just noticed these Nomad 'Resist' 45mm lightweight slicks from QBP... not as fat as the big apples but I can get two for the price of one and it'll still be fatter than my current 42mm hetre's

Other:

Cable housing - color?

Bar tape (newbaums's over inner tubes) - color?

Fenders - SKS longboards... need to buy, I've got VO Zeppelin's on the Trek, but as the Atlantis will be offroad more having the quick release will be good.

Lights - dyno lighting... The trek has a shimano hub and Supernova head/tail light combo.  If the Atlantis becomes my primary commuter then I'd want to get the dyno setup over to it sooner than later.  (700C dyno wheel build in my future)

Bell - incredibell... waiting in the package for a new home

Racks - NEEDED... some kind of front rack to support a wald basket 

She won't be the best dressed Atlantis out there right away... but I should be rolling within a couple weeks.  What do you think?!?

Build feedback.  If you haven't tried the MKS Sneakers, give them a try.  Maybe the sneakers will go on the Trek, freeing up the Grip Kings for the Atlantis, but every stable should have one set of sneakers.  If you are dead-set on paying the money for Grip Kings, then treat your self to a pair of Thin Gripsters, also for comparison's sake.  

Your black Tektro brakes can be made silver.  They polish up nice

Initial build complete!!!  She rides great, tomorrow morning will be the first distance test though...  I ended up stealing parts from two bikes in my garage and a couple other missing links from the local co-op part bin.  Definitely not the long term solution in alot of area's but it gets me rolling.  Only one trip to the emergency room involved! (deep cut while attempting to remove pedals from a chainring).

Got my first extended ride in around lunchtime today, a glorious spin in perfect weather.  I'm very impressed by the Atlantis, to be honest I had almost been dreading the first ride because I was afraid it would not live up to lofty expectations.  I was so wrong.  Couple initial observations, and remember that my frame of reference is primarily the 650b converted Trek with Albatross bars, a too-small-for-me MB5 and more recently a dropbar, compact geo Bianchi...

-Incredibly stable, best 'no-hands' bike I've ridden.  But that is just an aside, the bike just feels very solid under me.

-Somewhat related, cornering/handling is a huge improvement from both the Trek and the MB5, the MB5 was almost 'too maneuverable', the Trek is awesome at speed but doesn't hold tight, slow turns all that well.  I thought that was a wheelbase thing but the Atlantis is pretty close in that category so I'm at a loss.  Bottom line is that the Atlantis moves extremely naturally, reacting to lean, hip twist and of course the handlebars.

-Original moustache bar jacked way up in height = awesome.  The same setup was on my MB5 but I couldn't get it up high enough, the new setup is very comfortable, I rode the 'hooks' up forward quite a bit with excellent comfort.  The bar-ends stop much shorter than my Albatross bars which did lead to some tentativeness in climbing out of the saddle.

-The cheap-o avenir pedals off my wife's old hybrid are pretty sweet with big keen hiking shoes... got to say it, really nice fat platforms.

-The drivetrain, oddball as it is worked like a champ... How many 3x5 speeds, friction mix of suntour and shimano are out there?  

-The brakes, wow, so much better than essentially the same setup on the MB5.  I'm getting better at this I guess, but the new jagwire brake cables probably help too.  Very secure and steady stops even with some rolling descents.  FUN!

-The 34ish cm Kenda tires... SUCK.... The EL Hetres on my Trek are like a different category alltogether (should be for the pricetag).  New tires are a priority, even before an improved wheelset.  The Kenda's are harsh for there size...

That's probably enough. I loved this ride, great weather, great bike, fun route.  20.5 miles all told. I'm going to do a slightly longer ride tomorrow morning down to Mount Vernon and back with a buddy of mine. Should be great.

That's really funny, we'll have to plan and ride the route together sometime soon!

Today's ride up'ed the mileage to around 30m with a rainy trip to Mount Vernon along the appropriately named Mount Vernon Trail.  This is my third attempt in this ride and the first time I made it up the last hill without dismounting... the first time I bonked out and quit with 100 yards to go not knowing how close I was, the second time I dumped the chain as I attempted to downshift at about the same point, and third time is apparantly a charm.  I didn't get the opportunity to dump the chain because apparantly my FD isn't quite dialed in yet and I couldn't get a shift to the granny gear... oh well, I made it after all!

The brakes also got a workout when my riding partner Joe did a fairly controlled tumble in a slick, descending S-Turn on the way back. I was about a bike and a half length behind him riding my brakes already.  Lucky for me it was clear  he was in trouble immediately on the turn and I was already braking so I neither fell avoiding him nor ran him down... happy for both of us.  He and his bike were fine and able to complete the ride!

The Atlantis for her first major parts swap tonight going to alba bars from moustache, they are set up with a dirt drop stem for now, shimano bar ends and shimano levers. My first around the block ride extended for about 20 minutes because I was enjoying it so much!

This is the first time I've paired the Alba's mounted 'right side up' with my B67 saddle... Really nice match I think, really really upright. But in a good way.

I feel it's only fitting to come back to my initial thread ever on this great forum to close the chapter on my 64cm Atlantis, list member Anthony (in Portland) confirmed he received it today.  A great run all around, I got a ton of good riding in and have met some great people in the DC area as I reached out to fellow Riv owners.  Not to mention all the info and stories I've been a party to here on the RBW forum since last August.  I've got a full photo set of all the build's I went through and some memorable rides and moments with the Atlantis up on my blog;
