Hey SoCal Riv riders,

I know this is extremely shot notice...have been reluctant to make a post as my lower back (Dirt drop & upright bars in my horizon) hasn't been cooperating, two weeks ago I had to bail on a ride I organized. Since my back has been given the go ahead here are the details:

Friday 18th of October. The place Julian, CA  Meet up Bailey Pit Barbecue on Main Street at 1:30 pm. Ride out Hwy 79 up S1 Sunrise Hwy and jump on some dirt roads and single track around Big Laguna Lake and make camp at Desert Overlook Camp http://freecampsites.net/#!7913&query=sitedetails approximately 21 miles + with the dirt sections increasing the distance sightly. On Saturday drop down to Pine Valley for Breakfast, then ride the 25 miles back to Julian via Hwy 79 through lake Cuyamaca.

Disclosure: I have never stayed at this camp and it appears to be in the Cleveland National Forest "Federal" and it may have a gate blocking access in. I figure to stealth camp if the camp is closed. Also there is no water, though it is adjacent to a Federal camp which does have water normally but the "Feds" may have turned off the water supply, therefore plan on bringing extra water. I plan on bringing two Platyapuses about 4 liters plus three water bottles.

Beer and or Pie in Julian post ride.

Look forward to riding with all of you.

Best,

~Hugh

Good luck, Hugh. I managed open access to the Caddo-LBJ National Grasslands for a S24O over the weekend. So maybe it'll be easy, but then again this ain't California.

Best wishes for the back, and keep those photos coming.

Thanks Chris! Though were in the West, Southern California isn't as wild as it once was, then there are the desert regions still wild and prickly.

Since I haven't been up on Mount Laguna in a decade it's hard for me to know what to expect? In the years I spent time up there it was still possible to stealth it.

Glad to hear that the shut down didn't spoil your outing.

And the pictures will continue as I hope your's do as I enjoy your Blog a sphere.

Warm Regards,

~Hugh

Best,

~Hugh

While I can't make it, I encourage anyone wavering on this to just do it.  I've ridden this loop & it's a wonderful ride.

Hint, hint:  Springtime - Julian to Anza Borrego S24O?  Just thinkin'.

Doug what's the deal are in sync or what! While scoping out this ride I thought it would be awesome to drop down into the Desert from Warner Springs. I remember this awesome campground up above the desert floor with spectacular views. We'll work it out. Keeping March 15th open for the RSR. But I'm sure we can find an appropriate date.

Hugh:

I'll see if I can figure out when I last did this.  We rode the loop down to Pine Valley on one day, encountering snow around Mt Laguna.  The next day we rode down to Anza Borrego for a couple of days.  Mid-day was too hot to ride, & we got an early start to beat the heat when returning to Julian.  Wonderful study in contrasts.

Sounds like a great idea for a trip. I have some great Mt Laguna memories. It would be interesting to return and see if my memories were at all like reality.

Andy,

You have some time yet...pack up the AHH and fly on down we'd enjoy having you with us rolling over some old stomping ground. Just in case lots of pictures will be taken so you can compare with your memories. Really wish you could make it.

Best,

~Hugh

I'll be there (assuming everything goes accordingly)!
With my luck, all my classes are cancelled on Friday. S240!

Alas, I have to deal with the ball and chain Friday and into the weekend.

I have done most all of this in various separate segments and I know you guys are in for a fantastic time.

My one additional recommendation would be that anyone coming up 78 from Escondido to Julian carbo load at Dudley's Bakery in Santa Ysabel.  It is at the junction of 78 and 79 before you get to Julian.  October specials are German Black and Jalepeno Cheddar breads.

Best regards,

Tom

Tom,

Sorry you can't make it, but marital responsibilities trump everything! Thanks for the recommendation, I've been to Dudley's on many occasions and always enjoy their baked goods. We'll plan a day ride soon like Curtis's Bay ride out to Coronado and ferry back ramble soon.

Best,

~Hugh

The Julian Baking Co. is in the same spot as Dudley's.  Bring home some pie!

I know this sounds insane but I'm on a refined sugar fast, now in my third week so no full pies coming home but a slice? Definitely a brew or two or...

Once the poison content and addictive nature of sugar is understood what's insane is to keep using sugar. The next step toward sanity is understanding grains are prepubescent sugar with a multitude of anti-nutrients -- natural defenses of the plant, intentionally selected in over the last 10,000 years, to fight off pests. Natural pesticides are even more poison for our bodies to contend with, with little to no nutritional benefit, and even more detriment when the nature of them to bind with vitamins and minerals so our body can't access them is understood. Sounds to me like you are on the road to even more sanity, Hugh. Grin.

Have a wonderful group S24O! Sounds like a fantastic time.

With abandon,
Patrick

Hey Patrick,

I like the way you summarized that. Is that all grains? Is rice in that group? I have been off wheat too. My limited knowledge of wheat is that what we eat now has been genetically altered as to be without any benefit to us, where as the grains our ancestors ate (particularly wheat) were better for the body in their natural form.

What I find most interesting is that though my riding has been down ( number of days) back pain and obligations my weight has dropped by 1/2 a pound. Most amazing 1.) Most everything packaged has sugar. 2.) How easy it's been to stay off refined sugar, I do indulge in raw honey in my tea. I've been advised that raw honey is okay.

Thanks for the thumbs up on this S240 as I've wanted to do one in this area for a while low population factor and all it can't hardly compete with you back yard, fortunately it's not a competition as the late Seth Vidal said go ride! We work with what we have :-)

Best,

~Hugh

Hugh, On the diet I'm on (Perfect Health Diet, www.perfecthealthdiet.com), I eat 1-1.5 cups of "safe starches" a day (white rice, yams, sweet potatoes, white potatoes), but all other grains are anti-nutrients. I initially tried very low carb, eating none except for fruits and veggies, but found I bonked with prolonged aerobic activity. This summer I have done a 48 hour and 75 hour fast (no food intake at all), with 5-6 hours of aerobic activity a day while camping -- all without bonking. I had food with me but simply did not feel hungry.

Yes, wheat has changed significantly, especially in the last 2000 years. Like you, we use honey, very sparingly. Yes, eating this way eliminates processed foods entirely, which may seem daunting or burdensome, but we've found it amazingly freeing. We've also found that any animal products from animals eating grain have a similar effect, so only eat 100% grass fed or wild caught meat, fish, and dairy. No everyone is so sensitive, and can handle eggs and bacon and other things that can't be found without grain supplement. By calories, my diet is 70-80% fat, 15-20% protein, 10-15% carbs. I have a lot more brain clarity, cushion, and energy than previously.

With abandon,
Patrick
