I apparently volunteered in the Jamboree thread to start organizing so I'm starting this new thread.

Question 1: When? The date in the poll was 7/19, but I've heard requests for 7/12 and 7/26. Send me your vote please or do a poll.

Question 2: Can you volunteer some time to help move this along? Volunteers could meet and hash out details, or we can try to coordinate by e-mail. Let me know your preference.

Question 3: What is the wing speed of a swallow?

Tentative itinerary: China Camp and various meanderings around Marin; trip to RBW and possibly the largest ever Diablo S24O; bbq at Grant's house (just kidding on that one).

Grant's house terminus (also just kidding, but... Would it not be great to give him a tribute for this movement [assuming it is wanted]).

But, then, let's not be hasty.

Treebeard:

“You must understand, young Hobbit, it takes a long time to say anything in Old Entish. And we never say anything unless it is worth taking a long time to say.”

Seriously I am willing to help.  Perhaps we should start thinking of where folks will stay and gathering points.

Take care,

Great may I suggest http://doodle.com/?locale=en for the voting of date. Easy to set up and keeps everything simple to tally.

Very close between the 12th and 26th. We may just have to hold 2 events.

If we do it on the 12th it really helps me on Summer planning...noticed a lot of folks are available for multiple dates? Of course I'm not the center of the universe so I will go with the flow.

It looks like 4 people can't make the 26th, and 5 people can't make the 12th.
I just updated my vote to reflect my availability for all three dates.

I was the person, or one of them anyway, pushing for the 19th as I'd be flying back to Hawaii from Boise (where I'll be on the 12th). I couldn't afford to fly back to the mainland but diverting the Bay Area was doable. But....

...as it turns out a friend is getting married on the 19th so I won't be attending anyway. Sigh. I tried to talk him into changing his wedding date but...well...not so much. :-0

Jim,

A big thank you for organizing this. For folks not familiar with Walnut Creek here is a quote from a recent article in the local paper about the newly opened Bentley and Maserati of Walnut Creek, "There was pent-up demand, and the arrow pointed directly to the San Francisco East Bay. And Walnut Creek has that luxury-brand cachet."

For a more real-world ad see this one in a local magazine:

The poll is closed and the date will be July 12th. If you look at the poll, apparently Betty Foy herself cast the last vote and will be making a celebrity appearance.

I am very sorry about the date not working for everyone. I would like to say that there will always be someone from the list who is willing to take you on a ride if you come to RBW country.

What:
"Riv Rally West?"
"Rivendell Bicycle Works 20th Anniversary Jamboree?"
"RBW 20th Anniversary Gathering and Entmoot?"
RBW Jamboree West (I do like the word "Jamboree")
Rivendell Bike Celebration and Campout

Where:
China Camp State Park
China Camp, CA
China Camp, San Rafael, CA

When:
July 12, 2014

Aw, shucks! Thanks for the enthusiasm, it made my afternoon. Honestly, I didn't think through the project any further than "make cool graphic." I'll put some effort into making tangible things (if only I still had that screen press...).

Is there a printer in the house?

A bit more work on the poster/graphic in the last two days.

I approached my friend to print us some posters (http://peternevins.bigcartel.com/), but quantity/price/interest are all TBD. I think the black block with a bright color on the bicycle would make a nice poster.
Someone on the list recommended a semi-local screenprinter, and I pinged them about tee-shirts, as well. I want to use water-soluble inks for the soft hand and low eco impact.

Here's a work-in-progress itinerary for Rivfest:
2 nights China Camp/1 night on Mt Diablo -- I will reserve campgrounds and send a link for some non-camping lodging. China Camp should be pleasant. Diablo could be 90+ temperatures, so I'm thinking camp high on the mountain for the view and breeze.

I'm thinking group dinners all 3 nights (I've got at least 2 volunteer cooks so far), but bring your own breakfast/beer/bourbon/Oban.

Rides of varying "gruel factor" led by Manny and some other as-yet-to-be-identified volunteers (I'm hoping our listmaster can lead a ride; Marin's his turf.).

I'll also point out that not only is this Riv's 20th, but it is also a decade-marking anniversary for Grant. Maybe one ride will go by Grant's house and we can serenade him.

So how about some input, por favor. Volunteers welcome too.

Gruelling rides? Let's say spirited. Romantic. Humbling. Stupid.

I got a good one planned for China camp that involves something dumb.

Diablo? I got one equally as stupid. Carrying your own gear adds to the complexity and nuttiness. Should be a blast.

I have confirmation of the reservation at the new China Camp group campsite (40 person limit) for July 12th & 13th. And if you don't want to rough it, here are some other options:

Here is a Google search for motels near China Camp, the Marin listers may be able to add some info on these:
https://www.google.com/maps?t=m&sll=37.9977496,-122.4796994&sspn=0.051947,0.0878947&q=hotel+China+Camp+State+Park&output=classic&dg=opt

Here is the VRBO list for San Rafael:
http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/california/san-francisco-bay-ar/san-rafael
I like VRBO, especially when you can split the cost with someone else.

Some AirBnB possibilities:
https://www.airbnb.com/s/San-Rafael--CA--United-States?checkin=07%2F12%2F2014&checkout=07%2F14%2F2014&source=bb

Manny said he has a crazy-a** ride planned. I'm sure it will be a good one. Don't let Manny scare you but we'll have other options for riding. Plus we'll have a friendly symposium focused on the following debates:

1. A calorie is a calorie is a calorie / Paleo rules
2. Helmets are superfluous / No they're not
3. And the final word on which chain lube is the absolute bestest

Deacon Patrick

unread,

I posit that "superfluous" in discussion item 2 is erroneous. Most arguments I've heard and buy for not wearing a helmet have nothing to do with it being "unnecessary because it is more than sufficient." I don't wear a helmet and I can't agree that helmets are superfluous. Further, I propose the phrase "paltry for the task of promoting safety" take the place of superfluous.  Just to jump in to the controversy early since I won't be there. Sardonic grin.

Who knows? Maybe God will surprise me with healing and I'll be there with bells and laundry scents and cologne and flashing lights and ... Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

A little "Local's Feedback":

Here is a Google search for motels near China Camp, the Marin listers may be able to add some info on these:

https://www.google.com/maps?t=m&sll=37.9977496,-122.4796994&sspn=0.051947,0.0878947&q=hotel+China+Camp+State+Park&output=classic&dg=opt

Goodness gracious, do NOT stay in the North Bay Inn San Rafael.  I am not kidding.  Kind of a bad area and very close to the freeway. Surrounded by some of the busiest and narrowest set of surface streets in the county, if you plan on riding to the festivities. The rest of the hotels listed aren't too bad, though the one out near the San Rafael-Richmond Bridge is a little tough to ride from as well.

Here is the VRBO list for San Rafael:
http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/california/san-francisco-bay-ar/san-rafael
I like VRBO, especially when you can split the cost with someone else.

Some AirBnB possibilities:
https://www.airbnb.com/s/San-Rafael--CA--United-States?checkin=07%2F12%2F2014&checkout=07%2F14%2F2014&source=bb

Indeed - VRBO and airBNB are good options.  There is San Rafael near downtown (zip code 94901) which is the other side of a hill (or the ridge if you climb up from the Dominican area).  But, there is also the "Peacock Gap" area, which borders the east end of China Camp SP, and Terra Linda / Santa Venetia areas, which are in the same valley as North San Pedro Road, the access to the park. Also, Lucas Valley and Marinwood are close/rideable as well. South Novato (Ignacio, Bel Marin Keys and that area) is a little further away, but certainly not out of the question for riding.

If anyone has a specific address or neighborhood they are wondering about, I'd be happy to give feedback regarding access and such.  email me directly on those types of questions.  - Jim / cyclo...@gmail.com

I am going to make another (final) pass on the poster / tee shirt artwork and open up preorders, then create the goods.
I want to make the name of the event stand out more, and probably bump up the bike size. Any other feedback is welcome. Really.

So the final name is...
RBW 20th Anniversary Gathering and Entmoot -- SF Bay edition?
RBW 20th Anniversary Gathering and Entmoot 2014?
Rivendell Owners Bunch Jamboree West 2014?
California Rivendell Jamboree totally unofficial RBW 20th Anniversary Celebration Gathering and Entmoot?

Andrew,

Yes it's on for the 12th.

At this point I only know that there is a PDX contingent planning on coming down. How many I have no idea? I know Manny plans on being around  And I plan on being there.

It'd be nice to see some of  the local's planning/itinerary. I've heard various ideas tossed out but nothing firm. There was a ride around Tam and then on another day a ride up Diablo with a stop by RivHQ? Or perhaps we'll keep it simple and a bunch of Rivendell's descend on China Camp and we wing it.

Personally, I'd love to camp at Sam Taylor or something similar. Or do the Shell Ridge camp. I assume if there were lot's of us that Shell Ridge wouldn't work. Anyway, what ever we do I'm sure will be a blast.

Thanks for the invite, but with my schedule, the demands on my attention and time (91 year old mother, just-about-13-year-old daughter), and my balance of payments deficit, it is highly unlikely that I'll be able to make the trip. I would, though, had I sufficient $ and time, you can believe that.

7/12 will be in the midst of our annual summer family gathering, too -- though I wouldn't put it past me to skip and go west ...

Thirteen year old child takes care of the 91 year old mom. Problem solved.
One solid day of driving on each end, and four hours of work per non-driving day. Gas would cost about $300? 2200 miles, 30 mpg, $4/gallon. My ballpark SWAG was twice, that though... Air travel looks like $360 roundtrip, so a better deal overall. You can use my 60cm Quickbeam with your own pedals on one of the days.

Hello All,

I had originally planned on flying out for the "Gathering", but have recently been booked to 'bike escort' some visitors from California, on a Pittsburgh to DC ride on the GAP/C&O canal trail.  Sorry to miss this, and will be waiting for reports and pics to start hitting the site.

Best Wishes to all who make the event.

Last year's official Riv S24O up Mt. Diablo, loaded with camping gear, just about did me in and this year I'm not as much "in shape" as last year. Soooo, I'm thinking CalTrain up to San Fran, short ride to the ferry landing, ferry boat to Larkspur, then a short ride to China Camp. If a trip to Riv WHQ and Mt Diablo is on the agenda, I'd wimp out once again: short ride to Larkspur, ferry to SF, BART to Walnut Creek. Then I could maybe make it up the mountain again.

I'm not within cycling distance of China Camp, and my bike-transporting capability is down to a little Fiat with a Dahon folder, but I might swing by on that anyway. You'll know me by a funny little bike with Rolf racey-type wheels, and a monstrous-long carbon seatpost topped with a Brooks saddle and Acorn bag. Hey, I bought the Brooks from Riv! :)

The original plan was to fly out with a bike and the wife who has been promising to show me Northern California for the past 23 years. She just canceled her portion of the trip, but I am committed to migrate regardless because that is a major perk of being a poorly paid public school teacher. I have 8 weeks for adventure between June and August.
My fallback might be swinging through Washington state to possibly collect a 68cm Atlantis to join my fleet back in the Wolverine State.

As mentioned above, I've reserved a 40-person group site at China Camp for 2 nights, July 12 & 13th. And because it's RBW's backyard, I've reserved a 30-person group site on Mt Diablo for Monday, July 14th. I assume there will be some drop off of attendees, or even some informal camping in the backcountry for Monday.

Master wheelbuilder Rich Lesnik has confirmed his attendance, as has RBW all around nice guy Vince Nivolo. More announcements of RBW folk will be forthcoming.

For planning purposes, now would be a good time to let me know if you're really going to attend. The poll didn't exceed 40, but if we have many more than that, we should get another campsite or two.

I have some volunteers already, but if you want to volunteer for something (leading a ride, cooking, shuttling, moonshine distilling), let me know that too.

Dude thanks so much for doing the reservations...I plan on being down/up for the 12th & 13th. I was planning on catching the Coast Starlight Monday morning. I could if the Riv fever has me leave Tuesday morning?? Anyway I'm down for two nights at CC. I will of course reimburse for my portion.

Anyone have a space for me potentially Sunday night around Oakland Jack London Square so I can get up early to pack my bike and catch the train?

The Amtrak packing process is super user friendly.  The boxes are HUGE.  Remove the pedals.  Turn the bars 90 degrees.  Roll bike into box.  No wheel removal or other futzing.  Nitto drops with bar end shifters fit but I may have loosened the clamp to allow rotation.  Check out a box at Union Station.  You'll be amazed.  I think you do need to check luggage well ahead of train arrival & like you say you don't want to be jammed for time.

Doug,

I was just about to email a pathlesspedaled. Do you know the length dimension of the Amtrak bike box? I now have the Albastache bars on the Atlantis and I kept the cables somewhat tight to the bars. I can rotate them but removal would be near impossible. I'd like to measure the bike length with the bars turned and check against the box dimension. Otherwise I'd need to re-wrap the bars!

Peter,

The box is $15 and yes it's checked luggage. You can only do checked luggage from certain (large) stations. It is recommended to call the station and ask if they have boxes & tape. The pathlesspedaled recommends bringing a black Sharpe to write on the box & tape. When I looked into traveling with my bike from the Bay Area it's all buses out of the city that run you to the Coast Starlight et al.

Be aware that train stations don't necessarily have boxes. And even if they say they have boxes the day before, they don't necessarily have boxes because they might have used them all up. And if your bike is not boxed, they (probably) won't take it.

So what I'm hearing is that theres two nights at China Camp (Saturday and Sunday) then one night at Diablo?
If thats the plan here's some rides I can suggest.

I was planning on leading a ride from the Ferry building to china camp via that Saturday morning.
Proposed route here.

Sunday Morning China camp ramble

Do a Mtbing loop. hang out maybe go bike and fish somewhere. Sleep.

Alternative option For sunday after riding and fishing ( Take the ferry back the the City, bart to Walnut creek shell ride stealth camp)

Monday Morning: ride to top'o diablo campground and camp.Ride dirt Tuesday morning.

Just a thought of rides to expect.

Saturday seems doable. Maybe.
Sunday Riding can definitely happen.

Monday Riding is typical of the Tradition that is camping at Mt.Diablo

Let me know hows this fares with everyone.
I'm pretty sure we can just wing it too

Alternative suggestion would be to take a more direct route there Saturday, and do a version of that ride on Sunday...unloaded. But if that does happen on Saturday, I'm in...I know the route so if I get behind I'll find my way. But like Richard said, may trade fishing/riding for sleep the next day.
