Seth's contributions here were always positive.    Not surprising that he was also a prominent contributor in open source software community.     His death is tragic and the circumstances infuriating.

Man, this just took the wind out of my sails.

Over the years, I've gotten to know many people on the various lists through their posts.  Seth and I traded private emails now and again, covered topics of bikes and life, and I've always enjoyed when we had a chance to chat.  Though I've never met him face-to-face, I really feel I've lost a friend. This has saddened me deeply.

My first Riv-friend as well – Seth very patiently helped me make the size decision on my first Rivendell.  Most generous with his time and experience.  Like Jim, I had some in-depth off-board correspondence with him from time to time, on topics as disparate as religion and touring.  I’ll miss his posts, and his pictures, and his advice.  Senseless.

I am fortunate to have Seth as a real-world friend.  And, your comments are all spot-on - he's a great guy, an asset to all the communities in which he lived, and a fun friend who will be sorely missed.

I am heading over to his house now to take dinner.  I have printed your kind words (forgive me, trees) and will take them to his partner, Eunice.

Kind regards

I wish to express here forgiveness and respect for All, and the person who apparently was driving the car . Regardless True forgiveness is unconditional , for it is true Love. We all give lip service to Love, but who among us really understands it depth, totality and omnipresence.  Further, who truly practices it with all before and of them in their life, regardless of causation ?

I forgive, for all are brothers and sisters. I'm not speaking of the limited perspective of human genetics, I am speaking of that which we are all of, Spirit. We are all Eternal beings .... of which our lives never truly end nor begin , the essential being that forever is . Unified .

I forgive all therefore , as I forgive all of myself. None of us are free from acts upon each other and ourselves which hurt deeply. To condemn any act of another, is to condemn oneself. We are all greater than this, and why it hurts so much when we do not forgive. The cuts that run deepest are those by our own hands. Regardless of what anyone or myself does, Love beckons because Love is All There Is.

Some of you may be are thinking, who is this person to write this in this time of pain ?
I answer .... Who am I to not ?
When do the punisher's stop punishing themselves as another  ?
Now is the only time there is.
Have you noticed, there is only now ? Yesterday it was now, and tomorrow it will still be now when you look at the clock.

Awful news.

Frustrating that they only charged the driver with felony hit and run and not vehicular homicide.  There was a hit and run that killed a bicyclist in Minneapolis last week and that driver was charged with criminal vehicular homicide - http://www.startribune.com/local/west/214795291.html

My younger brother passed away 2 years ago. He was an avid member of a truck modification group similar to the RBW group. His friends went as so far to as come to the memorial service for him. I'm not sure if that would be the most appropriate action but I think collecting donations for flowers or food to be delivered (a truly wonderful thing to have around in times of grief such as this) would be highly appropriate and a wonderful thing to do for his family. In moments like these discovering how many people a person has touched in their life was incredibly wonderful and part of the healing and acceptance process _for me_. I know each person is different but perhaps flowers or an edible arrangement would be a nice thing to have delivered.

Thoughts?

I am so sad to hear this news. Seth-- you've had such a positive impact on many people, and you are missed.

My friend and ex-coworker knew Seth from his open-source software life, and had corresponded with him. He touched a lot of people in a positive way. So genuine and kind, and engaged.

Jack, thanks so much for posting. I think we're all stunned and heartbroken over the loss of Seth and doubly so that he seemed to be adding so much to the world. Please keep us in the loop if there'll be any sort of memorial fund for Seth. Whether it goes to bike advocacy, another of his passions, or just to help the family, I imagine there are many here like me that would love to contribute something.

All the best,

This has been hard news to take, and I know I'm not alone in being confused and disturbed and saddened by this.

There are a few groups of people in my life that I think of as family to varying degrees, and this is one of them. It's because of the consistently reliable input from people like Seth.

I will miss Seth.

I'd also like to thank Jack for sending messages from the forum to Seth's family. Even if it is only miniscule, I hope it can give them something. I'm still in shock and can't imagine how they feel.

The postcards that this group and others in the Riv world sent to my late friend Nick Cassell, were initially a source of great encouragement for him, and when he died, for his his family and friends.  His son arranged all the post cards on two panels that were prominently displayed at his memorial. The area was visited all through the memorial. I wonder if we could do something similar for Seth? Perhaps we could each send a favorite ride picture to show that Seth is in our thoughts? I am sure Grant would post something to reach the larger group. However, I am not in Durham, so I am not sure how this could be coordinated, so it is just a thought - like many others I feel some show of support is needed. Bob (Indianapolis)

Jack, thanks for sharing the update.  Please keep us informed.  If the family decides on a memorial fund we will all want to know about it.  If you think it appropriate we would like to have a personal address to send our love and support to his family.

You're welcome.  Everything that folks here have noted is true.  I know Seth enjoyed the owners bunch quite a bit - conversations from this group shifted to our lunch conversations on more than one occasion.  And talking about all of you was no different from talking about our IRL friends here in Durham.

I will keep all of you in the loop on goings-on here.  There will likely be several bike-related events, to be certain.  A first informal one is being hosted by a local shop that he frequented (one of many) this Sunday and there will be others.

If this group would like to coordinate something that would benefit from any on-the-ground activities, please don't hesitate to contact me.  Emailing me directly would be best, jack.warman at gmail.

Thanks
Jack

I had several pleasant and a few heated personal communications with Seth over the years. He was obviously passionate about cycling. We had plans to meet a few years ago at Richmond NAHBS, but some last minute something prevented our meeting. I always figured I'd cross Seth's path eventually.

Yeah, it is a good idea.  Haven't seen any obituary in the Durham news yet.  But I did see that someone posted a news clip of his demise over at SlashDot.org.  Since he worked for an open source software company, that's a popular site for discussing OS such as Linux and the like.  'Course, the blog threads (like most of 'em on that blog site) immediately deteriorated into character slamming, name calling, and generous use of vulgar invectives over whether or not the driver was a criminal.  Ignore those remarks if you go there.

This is what drives people to become hermits.  A good person died.  Many other good people are out a good friend.  Save the petty bickering for later.

I lived in that neighborhood and biked on that road everyday for 3 years. So sad. Snashvilleo scary.

I think Seth was a great addition to this small world of RBW an to the broader universe.

May he rest in peace.

Friends,

Some more info about the goings-on here and online.

First, the service for Seth is this Saturday at 11a ET at Clements Funeral Home 1105 Broad St., Durham, NC.  You can leave remembrances for Seth on Clements site:

Seth's partner, Eunice, told me "the remembrances are helping," so I encourage all of you to share the kind words you've posted here with his family through Clements' site.  In addition to their being able to see them now during this difficult time, they will also be able to view them later when they have left Durham for home.

Also, I told Eunice that many of you wanted to be in touch, and she gave the thumbs up for sharing their physical address.  Honestly, you could get it on your own via the Google machine, but please know that she's comfortable hearing from any of you who are interested in sending a postcard or other sort of note.

Ms. Eunice Chang
2309 Woodrow St
Durham , NC 27705

A local shop that Seth frequented has a monthly ride that he and Eunice often joined, and as the ride is the second Sunday of the month, it happens to hit this weekend and is in Seth's honor.  Looks to be much bigger than normal this month. Come if you can.

And, the Fedora Project website has a nice Seth tribute up on their homepage:

Thanks again for all the kind words about Seth, and the great vibes sent my direction as well. It's been a difficult week, but its been buffered substantially by the tremendous outpouring of love that have been shown to Seth's family and friends from all of the many communities in which he was active.

Best
Jack
