Just a few weeks ago I I was coaxed into doing a SF Randonneur "Populaire" ride . The rando/Riv Venn diagram has a healthy intersection, as I'm sure you're well aware. I saw a repurposed mid-70's Raleigh International, fancy paint, all the modern brazed bits.

Ah, the same International that I allowed myself to lust after for 5 minutes from the Raleigh catalog as a teenager. Knowing full well that I could not afford it, I let my eyes peruse the next model down, the Competition, which was still out of my budget. Flipping the page backwards, the Gran Sport, with fully double butted 531 tubing was oh so close, but I knew I could not save enough in time to get it before the Big Bike Trip I had planned. I settled for the straight gauge 531, high tensile steel fork'ed Super Course MkII, which I kept for the next 12 years before selling it and upgrading to triathlon ready bicycles. 2 kids and 35 lbs later, I started riding again. I now have a 3-speed upgraded to 8 speed commuter bike. The one bike I held onto from pre-marriage days is a Bike Friday New World Tourist.

Back to the Populaire. My childless buddy has a Rivendale. Actually, 2 including his Quickbeam. I saw some of the most beautiful bicycles I had ever seen-you know those rando-types, it's about looking good and riding far - which is what a Rivendale does for its owner. With 2 kids to get through school, I really can't justify spending a ton of money on a bike. I'm lucky that I bought my Bike Friday before I got married, so I've got that odd little beast (the clown bike, as one of my buddies calls it). The most time I'll ever get for a long haul of touring for the next 6 years will be one, maybe two weeks, not enough to justify $5k. But I do see myself doing more of these randonneur rides, maybe up to a 300k at some time.

Love/hate relationship with the internet manifested: I found that a vintage Raleigh International is an excellent starting point to make a fairly authentic rando bike. Five Craigslist clicks later and I found this:
Inline image 1
I couldn't help myself. It was like getting a second chance to ask out that girl in high school you couldn't get up the nerve to talk to.

I'll take ownership in a few days. I'm budget challenged, but any spitballin' brainstormin' ideas of what I should do with it are appreciated (no, you can't have it, it's mine!)

Congrats! The picture didn't show, but you're sure to have a grand time setting it up, then every lane you ride will have a bit of memory lane.

Looking for a frame builder/painter in the SF Bay Area. Ed Litton I already know, any other recommendations?

I've attached the picture for those that can't see the image in my original post.

Why paint it? It looks great like it is. I had an international for years and loved it I still regret selling it.

Internationals are GREAT bikes. Probably the only vintage bike I would go out of my way to get.

BTW, I can't see original pics either, but can see the second posting in Chrome.

And where is this Rivendale of which you speak :-)

Cheers,
David

Congrats!  I was watching that frame - didn't intend to buy it though.  It should build up into something lovely!

Peter,

I have a medical condition. It's malignant. It's called engineeritis, I can't leave well enough alone.

David,

Oh, I thought this was the Rivendale site, on second look this is the RONA site (yes, I have the t-shirt). BTW, I always misspell it when typing the URL, but Google corrects me. The problem is therefore with Google Groups, not me.

Nick,

Glad you didn't buy it before me! I've seen the models with the Capella lugs. Although the idea of having a rarer frame is interesting, the Nervex lugs are sexy, whereas the Capella lugs are, well, not as. Just my opinion (and money).

I agree with the others that it looks pretty nice as is... a little beausage doesn't hurt. What about Cyclart ? Greg Reichle is the fellow's name, I think. Looks like they have different pricing  levels of restoration depending on what you plan to do with the bike. See http://www.cyclart.com/newindex.html

When I was 20 I lusted after the Bianchi w full record; about $525 in 1973 at Gooch's in Winnipeg. I also considered one of the Raleigh models; I think it was the MKII with straigh-gauge Reynolds 531 in the main tubes at a tick under $200. Ended up with a Peugeot PX-10 for $325, which was not a bad second fiddle.I've had 2 of these bikes stolen and I have the 3rd one bought in 1982 (excavated from the aforesaid Gooch's basement) that I  now run as a single-speed. It's hard not to like that Reynolds frame and those sexy Nervex lugs...although on mine they're a bit rough looking. As is the rest of the paint on it. If I won a lottery, I'd indulge myself and have it repainted and redecalled. But I'm OK with the war wounds, and functionally, it's perfect with no rust or dings and it rides great.

Anyway, enough of my story...glad you got the bike of your dreams and I wish you many happy miles.

Regards. Ryan in Winnipeg

If you haven't already, check out what JP Weigle has done to a update a few classic Raleighs over the years. Here's his "Intercourse" as just one example.

Completion of the last one is a task that regrettably keeps getting bumped back in line in my build queue by projects that are more pressing because they’re for other folks!

Great minds think alike. I have already perused some of the bike porn at flickr, but Pudge found a few that I hadn't. The only thing for sure is that I must, must, must have one of those Jo Routens style pure front racks. A nice canvas and leather bag will sit on it, eventually, maker TBD.

Yep, the MKII was what I could afford back then. I found the original receipt last year, got mine for $170. I know about Cyclart, but wanted to stay local.

Attached is a pic of my Super Course MKII the day before my first trip down the California coast:

Rick at D&D Cycles paints some of the Rivendells and does a great job.  He's in San Lorenzo.

While Internationals are nice... I love those Capella lugs on the Comp's.
