Took the Sam out to the local roads of Larkspur and first ride since adding a Pass & Stow front rack , med Basket, Med Shop Sack, & Acorn Medium Saddle bag. Includes shots of downtown Larkspur. Note...three way stop at main intersections..no traffic lights. Hope the photos open.

Is there a small handlebar bag on your Sam at the handlebar/stem junction? What is that?

Yours,

Huh!  I drove right past there last weekend (on the expressway, though)!  I was thinking to myself how nice it would be to ride along some of those roads on a bike as I watched the scenery.  Saw several bikers out there enjoying it, too.

Thomas,
I have a "Goodie Bag" by Carsick Designs. It's a small bag that mounts to handle bar and stem.Carsick Designs is on vacation and there are no pictures of bags on their web site.
It can hold, wallet, keys, snacks a tall coffee..And it has a web outside pocket that holds my dog pepper spray..
Pic attached.

George,
Do you live in Colorado?
You probably saw riders on Greenland Open Space. It covers land from Greenland exit south to Palmer Lake where you pick up the Santa Fe trail and it goes down through the Air Force Academy to Colorado Springs.

"Do you live in Colorado?" - Nope. I live in the Chicago area and was traveling last weekend to witness my grandson's baptism.  I flew into Denver, rented a car, and drove to Colorado Springs (where they live).  The actual event was at a church in Monument.

"You probably saw riders on Greenland Open Space. It covers land from Greenland exit south to Palmer Lake where you pick up the Santa Fe trail and it goes down through the Air Force Academy to Colorado Springs."
Yes, that's true.  I got caught in some kind of weird traffic jam (everything slowed down suddenly for several miles for no apparent reason) and gazed out the window to see riders adjacent to the expressway.

Beautiful country you all live in out there, I must say.

Next time bring your bike!
The Santa Fe trail goes right thru Monument

Jon,

Like the others say beautiful country!! It's roads like this that get me going. https://www.flickr.com/photos/126595234@N07/18840111256/in/photostream/

I want to jump through the image and start riding. What's the elevation? So this area as Patrick calls it is the front range? I thought the Western side of the Rockies was the front range. Says the guy on the Western side :)

The Sam looks gorgeous, curious how do you like the paul thumbies mounted on the Albatross bars? I found that they eliminated the wonderful hand position just fore of the brake mount. Did you have bar ends prior? Thanks for the post.

One of these days I hope to ride Colorado.

Tail Winds,

~Hugh

Hugh,
Thanks for the compliments!!
I guess it depends where you live in Colorado Yes the eastern side of the rockies is called "the front range"..The western side ( Grand Junction) is called the Western Slope. That's what the weather people say on T.V.
We in Larkspur are around 6825 FT. When you go over Monument hill it's around 7200ft.
When you see Patrick riding he rides somewhere around 7000 and 9000 FT. For some it takes some acclimation to get used to the altitude if you are from sea level.
I love my Thumbies.I previously had bar ends on my tandem and I enjoy not having to move my hand to the end of the bar to shift. When climbing and want to shift my weight or just want a change of hand position I move my hands forward of  the brake levers.
You are in LA....I lived in Long Beach for 20 years.

I'm not from sea level; I live at about 800 ft.  Nevertheless, when I woke up last Sunday morning I had an altitude headache.

800 feet is sea level when looking at it from up here. Grin. I hope your head is doing better, George.

Depending on which of my rides we're talking about, I live at 8,000 feet and Jon is right, generally ride up to 10,000, but have done 11 and 12k on various passes on the Divide as well as Pikes Peak (14+K).

With abandon,
Patrick

How fast do you go downhill on gravel?

Not very fast Jim.
We've had a ton of rain and the dirt roads are really sandy in places.
It might be hard pack for a while then you hit a patch of beach sand.
It was more fun going back down
