That's just the kind of hubris that may come back to haunt you.  It's gonna RAIN tomorrow!  At least have the decency to put fenders on the winter set-up.

Rain's coming and I just got ready. Big Ben 50's on my Atlantis with P50 Longboards fit over that. I love it! I think these are staying on permanently:

The rain bike not having tan sidewalls is an added bonus. I hate it when those tan beauties get all grimy after rain rides. No problem with the black Schwalbes.

And I do have a cover for that seat.

My seasonal setup changes as much as David's with two arguable differences: first, we have actual seasons; second, my clothing. Photos to show the actual difference:

That's a nifty setup, Tony. The only thing that needs to change is ownership. Besides, when it snows in your neck of the woods everything shuts down and you don't need to go anywhere. The XO would be much happier here in the snow belt with me.

I am struggling to install fenders on this bike.
Clearances are small, so I have to file off here and there.

I took some really old ski gaiters and strapped them on to the albas. They don't insulate much, but they do keep the wind from getting to my fingers. When combined with lobster gloves I'm good into the mid-low 20s for my commute. Don't have any snow tires for the Sam, but if it snows more than an inch or two I have a (too small) Raleigh MTB with knobbies I can use.

Proof of concept ride!  The 1-3" dusting ended up being a bit more of a storm than most expected this morning but I had a BLAST getting to work. I underestimated how much extra work riding in the snow would be, any more snow and I'd probably wish I had gears.  The Xo-3 did fantastic, drive chain was good, brakes held up perfect, the alba's kept me stable and in control... and of course the Nokian Mount and Ground studded tires did great. In the fresh (still falling) morning snow I felt 100% stable.  In the evening commute the Mount Vernon Trail proved to be pretty treacherous with a crusty and bumpy ice surface but the tires still held up well.  More than anything the evening ride took a ton of concentration.  And yes the last picture is from my coffee stop, Misha's in Old Town to meet my buddy Wes who was also trying out his new studded tire winter bike (a drop bar Trek Antelope).

I'm doubtful about tomorrow, wind chills are supposed to get the temp down awfully low and I doubt the trails will improve overnight.  Maybe by Friday!

Tony,
Great pics and write-up. Bravo on biking today!
I was wishing I had been biking while I sat in gridlocked traffic at 6:15am today. A snowplow took out a power pole and blocked all traffic lanes on Connecticut Avenue. Good times!
I definitely need studded tires for my bike. Today's commute made that evident.
Stay warm.

Great pics, Tony! Yes, you'll likely find that snow resistance varies with type and temperature and freeze/thaw cycle, etc. There is a reason Inuit have over 30 words for snow -- each flavor is a vastly different experience! Grin. Enjoy!

Nice for being out. I'm at the point of chickening out of riding these past few days.  We did get up to +8F today.  Lots of black ice.  Even though I have studded tires, the cars don't.  Snow can be fun.  Or, once it packs to a hard icy surface, not so much.  At least to me.

That's the way of it here. Had the snow been deeper, you'd find
conditions would continue to worsen over the next few days, as you get
sections cleared by sunshine, others in the shade or on overpasses
(notably the bridges at National Airport and under the bridges to DC)
that will remain icy for a week or two, and large permanent icy ruts
develop. After a typical "good sized" snow fall the MT V trail will be
impassible for 1 - 2 weeks.

Nice pics and write up, Tony. More style points for giving it a go in the face of that weather. My city streets commute Monday and Tuesday was very cold (15-20°) with powdery snow accumulating on already cold pavement, starting not long before the morning commute began. The snow in the compacted wheel paths was crunchy and not at all bound to the road beneath, slicker than ice when trying to change speed or direction. A great time to be over to the right in the unbroken snow. Didn't have the opportunity to stop or take pictures, the morning didn't sink in as the beginning of the long cold part of the year. Looks like the studded tires are on for a while now, all take care out there.

Ha!  As I've said over the years, this is when the folks out in California get very quiet....

But, Saturday's ride _did_ require tights, warm socks and two layers of wool under the wind vest...

My annual sacrifice to the icy, salty Eastern Massachusetts winter: a 1987 GT Karakoram rigid frame mtb running studded Nokian W240 26 x 1.75 tires. Good, cold fun.

Took a little break from commuting with very cold weather here, but I'll be needing to commute no matter what at least 1 day a week, so I swapped out tires on my porteur build. I have a studded tire'd bike that I'll finish up tomorrow as well. For now, this did just fine:
Shogun Single Speed- 68cm
BG Rock n Road Tires (did great in the snow and on snow packed streets - let's me save the studded tire'd bike for icy days)
Soma Porteur Rack (I prefer front loads for commuting)
PB Fenders that have been on about 6 bikes so far and keep on working
Pixeo Battery Tail Light
Cygolite Headlight

I'll be taking some reflective tape to the fenders as well and probably add a second taillight. Pretty much all my commuting times will be in the dark.

Great to see an '80s GT Karakoram still on the road... and in such great shape.  Nostalgic glimpse back to my first mountain bike.  I had their totally ridiculous black crackle paint.  Always a fun bike in the rain, sleet, snow or sun that was well-loved until it was stolen in the late '90s.  Thanks for posting it.

I have been super lazy for months, but finally got around to installing a new pair of fenders on my Hunqapillar.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/sets/72157650693988781/

With my winter tires (Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro 29 x 2.25), clearances are small, so I had to file off some bits from front fender, and also cut the rear fender into two.
I am pretty much satisfied with the result, but maybe I will have to ride slow at first to make sure that it's safe to ride with knobby tires and fenders.

Takashi that Hunq looks great! I love that grey-red color scheme and the fenders really set it off. So far my XO3's readiness had exceeded my own willingness with the winter commuting. Lots of 30ish degree with mixed precipitation... I've got work travel over the next couple weeks to so by the time I get back I think the studded tires will be coming off. (Or maybe I'm too optimistic!)

The Hunq, alive and well in the wilderness.

I have a wheelset with Nokian W106 mounted for winter riding.

That's the only winter change I make.
