Recently replaced an inner tube on my rear. Took the tire completely off then remounted tire with tube. Inflated/deflated a couple times to make sure tire seated then inflated to approximately 40 psi and took it out for a spin. I get a weird rubber rubbing sound. Can't say how many times I've deflated/inflated and slid the bead around the inside of rim, a bunch of times with no change! Their mounted on Velocity Synergy rims. Has anyone experienced something like this? Lastly, this has happened before just can't recall how I resolved it. Thanks in advance for any constructive feedback.

Hugh:

Have you tried increasing the PSI and seeing if the noise goes away? I usually run my 650x42 Grand Bois at 50 PSI or more—you may just be hearing the casing flexing due to the lower pressure. Worth a try, anyway.

Eric,

I'll give it a try. I generally run them between 35 & 40 psi with no issues.

Not trying to offend or anything like that but I would start by making sure the wheel is properly seated in the dropouts. If that is not the issue then I would raise the psi as mentioned above. Good luck

Justin,

No offense,  I'm really good about seating the wheel in the dropouts. Seems that the Synergy rims are a deep well per Jan's Compass article and can be hard to seat. I suspect Eric ' s inflation recommendation will resolve the issue. Or I can add an extra layer of rim tape to make the well shallower.

Hugh, have you tried overinflating them, say to 70 lbs to make sure they are seated? I've done that to solve a similar issue. Then reduce pressure to your desired value.

Rubbing rubbery sound makes me think:

1.Got enough clearance around all stays?
2. Under fenders?
3. Brake pads not rubbing rims?
4. Is it a long, sustained sound or a quick, short sound? Once I had a tire where the little new tire whiskers hit the brake pads every time they went around. But that was sort of a ticking noise, not rubbing.
5. See here for solutions to unwanted bike noises: http://www.jimlangley.net/wrench/keepitquiet.html

Just for reference:
I run my Hetres at 50-55 psi and I weigh 170.
Have found that the newest generation of Grand Bois 650b 36 hole rims pretty much auto-seat Cyprii, Compass Loup Loups, and 99% auto-seat Hetres, if I remember right.

Evan,

I think you'll appreciate em. By the by, I inflated to 70 psi then deflated to 45~50 psi problem solved! Thanks everyone for the advice.
