Evan & I wanted to do an LA Urban ride, so that's what we did. Met Evan @ Pershing Sq then had coffee. Rode through China Town to the LA river trail to Griffith Park. The bump was climbing the back side up Garbage Truck road to the Observatory for some vista's of the LA basin then down into Silver Lake for Lunch and a visit to Golden Saddle Cyclery.

The Saddle was great and got a chance to talk with Kyle the owner and chat about his recent S720 to Messenger Flats and area in the Angeles Forest.

We then ended our ride in China Town. No hoisting beers together on this one but we have plans for one where brews will be had.

A leisurely 30 mile ramble.

Hugh,

I was counting bikes and pedestrians yesterday on the LA River bike path around 11 a.m. at Steelhead Park, near the south entrance to the bike path. A pair of cyclists came by, riding bikes that look like your and Evan's bikes, and commented about my Miata tied up nearby, "What do we have here?" From your photos, looks like you just left Chinatown heading north towards Griffith Park.

I love bikes! What a wondrously different experience and scenery than I'll likely ever have on the bike (baring brain healing, the sound of the city would do me in in seconds), but the bike takes us each where we are going. Thanks for sharing the city art and ride.

With abandon,
Patrick

Thanks Deacon...not that I want to experience the city environs often but you work with what you have. I find the city has much to offer but of course I'd choose 9 times out of 10 to spend time in locals such as yours. IMHO the bicycle is a magical way to transport one self through all sorts of surroundings.

Pre brain injury I was never much of a city person, though I went to university in Denver, but I always loved visiting them. I can't say I miss it, but seeing the various pictures here reminds we what isn't an option. It's great to experience it vicariously, be it LA, Portland, Seattle, or DC.

With abandon,
Patrick

Good day for a ride and not quite as hot as the desert.

my camera battery was lost early in the ride (not so interesting story), so all the picture taking was done by Hugh.
After seeing  Hugh off in China town, I rode to Union Station - a few trains were cancelled so I rode around for a few more hours,
visiting some old stomping grounds.  Felt an inspiration to photograph stuff, my only means was lousy iPhone camera ...

Deacon that's cool that you had that vicarious sense of adventure, I think that is at the escense of why we take pictures.
It is nice to look at your camp photos. it makes California feel very dry right now.

And now there's one more reason to go riding around downtown LA (at
least on the weekend):
http://stumptowncoffee.com/location/los-angeles/ Take that, PDX! :-)

BTW, don't forget CicLAvia is coming up on 10/6:

to three a year now... hold onto your hats as a monthly event is just
around the corner!!!

David:
stumptown is my favorite. will it be open for 10/6?

Mike:
thanks for sharing that contraption with me. I have a collapsable plastic one.
sort of wonder if there is some weight savings. Anyhow, it's a way classier and possibly more compact
mechanism.

Open seven days a week, so imagine they'll be doing some brisk
business on the 6th, although off the designated route a bit.

Oh yeah, Stumptown has the best coffee I've ever tasted!
And that was their regular cup o' joe, not even the extra-fancy stuff.

David, walked about 20 feet from the concert venue I was at, and I'll be darned, I accidentally found Stumptown today.
Weird coincedence. Pictures to prove it

Popped this into google maps and selected "bicycle".  I had to laugh.  Their selected route on W.Sunset takes you within two blocks of "Laur
el and Hardy" park.  Neither you nor Evan tend toward those two characters, but it struck my funny bone to see it on the map.

Looks like you had a good time with some great vistas.

Here is one I would like to try up there:  http://www.hikespeak.com/trails/sam-merrill-trail-echo-mountain/  Don't let the 2.7 miles fool you.  Looks challenging and has a fascinating history.  Looks like Hunqapiler territory.  I picture Rivsters hooting it up on Echo mountain.

Best regards,

Tom

I enjoy the city and the country experience. I always had a bike when I lived in the southland, but my range was quite small. Seeing all the pics from the LA, OC and SD areas make me realize how much I missed. One of my favorite things about this list are the range of environs people are riding in/posing pics from. Familiar and foreign... I love them all.

Yep Andy I like em both! Both have something different to offer...though looking forward to a local S240 in the Angeles Forest soon.
