I'm quite satisfied to say that I've introduced another Riv to the East Coast (to offset the big Atlantis I sent to Portland)... I got the bike together and out for a quick test ride this afternoon and was grinning from ear to ear.  It fits, it looks great, it rides as good as any bike I've ridden before... very stable and compared to my recent bikes (Atlantis, Trek 650B, XO-3) is quite spritely.  I've got some riding plans for the weekend and will be sharing alot more pictures for sure.

Still not 100% on the color, but I'm going to enjoy it a bit before I make any decisions on that front.  Thanks very much to Amy for making this sale work and taking such great care of the bike for the past 8 or 9 years!

I love the color, but I like pink bikes, too, so I'm biased!

A big congrats to you, Tony!!
Hope I can see it in person one day.
Looking forward to close-ups!

Are you thinking of Hetres for it?

Thanks everyone! I'll definitely give the color a thorough trial period never fear... And even then I may have an opportunity to straight trade with an identical but different color Saluki as an option.

Hey Michael I'm sure you'll get to see it soon. I'll set up a ride for April if I can nail down a good day for it!

That is one standout bike. I bought a Rambouillet from a list member a few years back. Though the color was described as a dark purple/blue, to my eyes and on my monitor the color looked navy. When I unpacked the bike, in person the color is very purple and not blue at all. I have always liked purple as a pleasing color, but never saw myself owning a purple bike. I get more compliments on the color of this bike than all my other bikes combined. Five or so years later, the bike needs a repaint and the only paint scheme I am considering is the same purple with creme details it has now:

I'm GREEN with envy! Any color on a Saluki is going to be good. Now get some Hetres mounted and ride.

No way, don't change the color!  Great setup.  I love the old Saluki decals and headbadge too.

That color rocks.  Calls just enough attention to itself.

Of course, it will look perfect with a bit of road and trail dust on it.

enjoy!

Purple, gold, and black are classic. I'd wrap the handlebars in a brilliant yellow, golden shellac, with the same for chain guard. If you fender it, golden wood fenders. With a tan saddlebag ... wow. But then it's not mine and whatever you do will be fantastic too.

Patrick

Congratulations!  The color grew completely on me, just in the time it took me to read your blog entry.  Enjoy it.

Patrick I love the golden yellow suggestion for the bar tape!

I did a 30miler this morning out on the C&O Canal Towpath, I figured a new bike deserved some new to me miles as well and the bike performed brilliantly. I left the CdlV 32's on it for today's ride but will swap out to the Hetres tomorrow. The top tube length and the over all stability are the two most stand out characteristics so far. I think I've been riding with 7-10cm more reach than I should have because the saluki us so much more comfortable with the noodles than I've experienced on my trek. I'll do some sort of measurement comparison on the blog sometime soon.

Tomorrow I'm planning for a slightly shorter morning ride with Erl, go to get out and enjoy the great weather!!!

Thanks for all the comments!!

Great color, Tony! I caught a glimpse of it around Fletcher's cove. Was hoping to get a more detailed view at the rest stop but must have missed you.

Enjoy!

Hmm, i think with enough accessorizing and proper color matching of components, i could live with this color....eventually.  but congrats otherwise, hope to catch you on the trail soon---though it would be hard to miss you!

Love the color, I wanted this bike so bad. Now I have the funds, of course, such is life.

- Ride report and pics from this morning's ride.  Tonight I mounted the EL Hetres from my 650B Trek, I took the opportunity to 'rotate' the rear tire forward and hopefully extend the life of the pair.  Can't wait to check out the ride tomorrow. I also have new-to-me Nifty Swifty 32.8mm(~) tires now on the Trek, I'm hoping they help with the wicked shimmy I have, for now they make the massive hetre sized fenders look ridiculous though!

Kevin - were you on the 2TT Sam I saw?  There was a slug of #FMCC folks that came through just as I broke off from the VASA ride at Fletchers. I hope you had a great ride in any case!

Minh - what direction would you go w/ the tape/housing... I've been holding colors up to the bike this evening thinking it through. Patricks 'golden yellow' suggestion is an excellent one, I'm intrigued a bit by going dark blue w/ the 'bits of flare', and also green might be nice.

I think it's better to follow Sheldon's approach: when the back tire wears out, move the front to the rear and put the new tire on the front.

Sheldon does know a whole lot more than me... for now though the swap is made. The tread on the rear was better than I had expected, I'm estimating less than 1,500 miles on them in any case so I'm hoping to get plenty more life.  The sidewall fraying is the more concerning thing, need to pick up some rubber cement and get that under control.

Day 3 - Ride 3... Agatha (working name based on the color - Agapanthus Purple) is breaking in just fine and inspiring me to get out of my winter slump... I haven't broken 250 miles in a month since October!  March might get me back on track, we'll see if this latest snow storm actually hits us on Tuesday.  The hetres performed great, no surprises there and I was thrilled that the included SKS fenders worked easily even with the jump in tire size.  I was compelled to install the front rack/basket so that I could carry my camera and other bits and peices on todays ride and tomorrow's commute.  I have a new to me Carradice bag coming that may suffice for my commuting load. If so I might make Agatha basket-less for a while. No noticeable problems while I was riding but the front end is a pain to walk around with when loaded down.  I helped that situation on my Trek w/ one of those little VO spring damper's but i'd prefer not to go that direction on the Saluki if possible.

I demo'd some kelly green newbaums for the upcoming bar wrap on the TT (also keep my now loaded down front end from crashing the bar-ends into my paint), not a bad combo but my buddy Wes did bring up the excellent point that I'd need to rename her the 'Joker-mobile' after the 60's Batman shows Joker character... point well taken Wes! :)  The search continues!

Thanks Patrick!  Jones Point Park, which is under the VA side of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge was an emergency shipyard during WWI... there are several random remnants of those days and the new park really does a nice job showcasing them.  And they do make good bike props though I was as quick as I could be making that shot because the wind was whipping and the potential for a quick, watery grave for my new bike was real! :)

Congrats on the lovely machine!

I found a couple other lovely bikes in the purple spectrum.  Both lugged Paramounts, actually.

And this stunner, a '90 Paramount in "blue velvet gas", blue clearcoat over a purple base.  I want to see it in person!  It kinda resembles chromovelato.

Or if someone just wants a dash of purple, here's a 2004 Waterford frame with purple decals.  Only $200!  So tempted...

Just some bikes that came up on my radar, and caught my eye after seeing your lovely Saluki.

Cheers,

Tony,

Congrats on finally receiving the Saluki. I know all too well the excitement of that day, reminds me of childhood when I had no responsibility to speak of and your parents get you that new bike, it spells freedom. I also think you're wise to let the color either grow on you or not before leaping into the paint process. Though getting the color just right is also really sweet and makes it truly new. There's a silver Saluki rolling around these parts and it really shows what can be done with this frame set.

I met the feller and that bike really gets him around.

Thanks Hugh!

It is a pretty cool feeling and it's nice to get all excited about something and not be disappointed in the slightest,  you don't hear much about 'riv-regret' (unless it is about selling a Riv!)  That silver Saluki is sweet looking, it is a classy frame like all the Riv's for sure.  Looks like you had a good ride with some friends out in San Bernardino lately!  I'm looking forward to some more consistent weather out here so I can really log some miles!
