Not all Hilsens are created equal...BG RnR clearance fail

Well....sometimes the best laid plans are just to no avail.

Out of completely serendipitous luck the timing of my "AR trade for Hilsen" offer hooked me up with the original AR owner into a 3 way transaction with a 57 hilsen sale that popped up the same day. Trade went off smooth and with a couple confirmed Hilsen / RnR combos on the board I ordered the tires too. I finally had time tonight to get one mounted on the rear wheel and stick it in the frame....unfortunately THIS was the scene. Basically touching both chain stays. This Hilsen is a waterford built model with a brazed in chainstay bridge as opposed to a kickstand plate. Curious if that variation has any affect on clearance, or if some have crimped stays, or if size is a factor?

Looks like I have 2 options:

Somewhat risky: crimp the stays. (I DO have some experience with this, though with pre production frames.)

Safe: give up on a voluminous knobby tire (Not the end of the world as I have been curious about the C-lines, however I took the fat paselas off my old Hilsen in search for a more aggressive tire...)

I was so excited when I opened the box with the BGs...they are exactly what I had been hoping for in a tire. Sigh. I suppose I could always run them on my 29er.

That is strange,   The RnRs fit easy on my Hilsen on Synergy rims,   Maybe go with the crimp!

I'd rather give up the tire, than irrevocably de-value the frame, and maybe mess up the intended ride characteristics of the frame by crimping. Maybe even be ruining the alignment of the frame unless you get exactly identical crimps going on both stays?

I am no frame expert, though.

Maybe someone else can chime in to confirm that crimping would do all this.

+1 on not crimping. And I'm no frame expert either. I'd be wary of devaluing the frame set.

Lots of good suggestions in the 40-45 mm width range.  Looks like you are oh-so-close.  Maybe one of those listed will squeeze in without having to get out the hammer.  Didn't Rivendell have a Continental CX tire?  Or maybe the Clement MSO? 

I have the C-lines on my Atlantis & really like the ride, but plan to be quite careful off-road.  Rob at Ocean Air swears he's abused them with no ill effect and I believe him.  But it's still a street tread with supple sidewalls (why they ride so well) so I'll likely put my Schwalbe tank treads on for a serious off-road excursions.

At some point in our evolution/aging we started putting kixtand plates on all-but-the-Roadeo. You got one PKP, is all. The AHH generally clears a listed 40 (L40) with a fender, and for years I rode LISTED 47s (L47). It's a rare tire that measures up to its listing, and rim width affect it a little, but I buhlieve todos de los Homeros will take most of the L40s,,,which is pretty remarkable for such a roadish bike. Whatever tire any given frame maxes out at, there seems to be a primal urge to shoe it with a tire that simply exceeds this capacity. We do it here, too. There's a Cheviot here with a L45 knobby, and we've put  an L50 no fender on a Betty. Fenders and fender skills also affect tire clearance.

Sorta curious if a 47cm Toyo AHH (without kickstand plate) could fit a 650b tire of similar girth to the RnRs. Does that even exist?

Looking to go fatter. Perhaps I'll simply go back to Rumpkins.

should be available this summer I'm told.  Hopefuly it will fit your bike and maybe the 700c version will fit bigger Hilsens.

these look like they will be great tires. They have more outside knobs then larger original Nano so they will be better in corners.

Man, if it were me I would certainly find a different tire before crimping the stays. There are plenty of good tires that would fit the Hilsen.

Interesting... hadn't seen one of those brazed, non-KSP Hilsens before.

Yeah - I'm with the others who said there are plenty of voluminous tires with knibbly tread, other rim options and in general, another way to gain max volume without resorting to crimping.

What was the mic'd measurement of those tires, BTW?

I have a set of BG Rock n roads. Mine measure 43.4 mm on DT Swiss 19.0 mm wide rims.

Yep...decided not to crimp. Too risky just for a tread pattern. I happily ran my old 37 paselas, some Bontrager marathon-ish style, and Schwalbe delta cruisers all in rough terrain with not too much hassle. It wasnt the extra volume/width I was after but the smooth round profile WITH deep reverse tread that the BG offered. That combo works great on the pavement and even better in the dirt. Especially mid summer when the trails turn to small gravel swimming in 4" of loose powdery dirt.

The RnRs measured out to 45 at the outside of the knobs. That on a 25mm Mavic A319 rim.
