Hello folks!

Right before Labor Day holiday weekend, my friend Ed and I took Amtrak from Portland to Tacoma, and then rode 50 miles to Ipsut Creek campground on the Carbon River, in the NW corner of Rainier NP. To get to Ipsut Creek, one must access a pretty rough five mile road that's closed to car traffic. Despite crappy weather at the outset and bike breakage at the end, it was a good time.

You can read about it here:

yours,
Shawn

Great trip! I love those high trail bridges you have in the PNW. Amazing!

With abandon,
Patrick

You are welcome, Patrick. To note: that bridge is actually a road bridge, not a trail bridge. It carries SR 165 over the Carbon River.

Great writeup! And it sounds like a fantastic ride. Yikes, broken
bike. Was it under warranty?

I don't know. I know that Ed was going to check, but I haven't heard back about it.

Looks like a fun trip even with the rain and broken bike. The rSogn was never intended to be a touring bike BTW. Skinny tubes and lighter weight tubing. OK with a light front load but not really designed for that use. Even the larger sizes have tubing lighter than a Hilsen for example.  The good thing is, it's steel and can be repaired by any competent frame builder.

True. Though I'm guessing the breakage might have to do more with Ed being a monster on any bike he owns vs. touring on it. Ed's camping setup is pretty minimalistic and he normally uses a Camper Longflap with a few assorted items on the front rack.

Quite the adventure packed into a few days! Sorry to hear about the
bike, that's what happens when you ride carbon (river valley).

To quote Allaister Humphreys: All good expeditions should be simple in concept, difficult in their execution and satisfying to remember.

You nailed 3 out of 3. I'd say the trip was a winner.
