Hey Folks-
This summer I've really re-discovered my love of hiking - especially with my dog. The East Bay has such amazing trails it's almost criminal not to do it.
Currently my standard hiking "kit" includes:
- New Balance Minimus Shoes
- Underarmor ankle socks
- Either Giro New Road Mobility shorts (great shorts, you can find on closeout right now!) or 8 year old Levi's stretch denim 511s cut off.
- Standard cotton boxer briefs - although I did get a pair of Icebreaker merino at REI on closeout. They are great.
- GIRO new road merino wool ride top or Underarmor "Charged Cotton" or Nike Dri-Fit mesh tank-top
- Marmot minimalist packable backpack
- Nalgene 32oz - dog
- Nalgene 32oz or Specialized Purist - Human
- Random bandana
- iPhone - Runkeeper

Any types of Riv-inspired gear that I could replace stuff with? Or that you've found great on hikes of 4-20 miles in temps of 55-80 degrees? What's your gear?

Riv-Inspired.

Dammit autocorrect on OSX.

Not exactly on-topic, but:

The autocorrect isn't just OSX. It's also in every modern browser, and in Google Groups, regardless of what browser or OS you're using. Not to encourage paranoia, but they're all out to make you look stupid.

I hate it, too. I hate the stealth spelling changes that I don't notice until I've posted, after it's too late to do correct. I hate that every single one of these user interfaces doesn't give me a preference to opt out of using autocorrect.

I know how to spell, computers; leave my words alone.

The beautiful thing about hiking is that it requires zero technical or specialized apparel. Dare I say, Just Hike.

Well, I generally do running. But hiking is nearly the same.

I wear MUSA shorts or breeches. I usually don't take a backpack (that's what my bike is for), I don't need for during the day, I don't need water for anything less than 5 hours (when you don't eat carbs, you don't need water as often). If the weather is iffy, I tie my single layer ventile around my waist and off I go. Cotton t-shirt. Riv bike hat to keep sweat off my glasses. I won't mention whether or not I take a pipe and find a spot to hang out for an hour or so before heading back. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

Just Hike indeed!

I've taken that general approach but just as we Just Ride in wool, MUSA, Bike hats and the like I am curious if there's some great hidden gear that will fit my Just Hike approach. ;)

You realize, of course, that your list can never be truly complete until you ditch that Marmot backpack for a Rivendell - the actual namesake of our favorite bike company.  I keep my Mariposa model with me pretty much everywhere I go - hiking or not.   I think it's my favorite possession.

I'm in Iceland right now doing some hiking and a lot of thinking about biking thru Iceland. I brought a topo backpack, some danner mountain lites with the cordura window (which are more and more, the only shoes I wear if I can), musa pants and shorts, patagonia Nano puff hoodie (excellent for traveling), Tevas...I have been buying lots of wool here. Iceland is really in on the merino game so I've got a full mixed matched base layer now of unknown gas station and discount store merino undergarments. Wool long johns with musa pants has been a revelation. Also sprung for some 66 north pants, which, I hope, will be good for biking too. Nice slim cut but still flexible lightweight polyester. Normality looking. What I wished swrve pants were like.
I also brought other things which are decidedly un-rivish.

The Mariposa is also my fabulous, go-to everyday bag. Have had mine for 3 years and absolutely love it, a lifetime model of backpack for sure. Also, the Giant Jensen is a terrific backpacking bag. It was my first backpacking bag and it's so much more comfortable than the traditional bags I've used. It also is big enough to somehow relatively easily swallow an REI 3-person backpacking tent. The craftsmanship that Eric at RMW puts into this products is remarkable.

Hah! I wish. Well not really. If they had a minimalist pack that collapsed down smaller than my shoe I'd go for it.

And I wear a minimalist shoe!

While not minimal, the Riv Sackville Stickpack seems like the most Riv-inspired backpack, no?
Agreed. Just hike. Though wool socks make a lot of sense are are a joy to wear.
