I've had a pair of Nitto B115 drop bars hang around (literally) for a couple of years begging to be put to use.  I was inspired by an old Kohler faucet commercial (the one where a couple wants a house designed around a faucet).  So I've designed a bike build around these bars.  Had back surgery at the end of December and recently was released to do PT, so it was time to put this bike together.  I have to give a shout out to Pondero, Stonehog and a few others who's blogs kept me sane and inspired during the first few months after surgery, when I seriously doubted I'd ever ride again.  I rode six miles yesterday, which is the most so far, but to far to go to get back to the riding shape I was in a couple years ago.

Going to experiment with some Nitto Albatross bars too.  Got to keep a promise I made to Keven at Rivendell when I ordered the frame.

Ah...that's some seriously good looking medicine there. May it be seriously effective.

Thanks Ron.  The inspiration for the photos come from Alan Barnard of EcoVelo fame.  I always admired his creative style when he'd do a photo shoot of his bikes.  Wish he had kept the website going.

I sure hope so, Chris.  Riding does seem to help loosen up the back, though there's still a long ways to go with the recovery.  I've enjoyed reading your blog, one of many I follow that have helped keep me motivated to get back to biking.  I'm going to give those Albatrosses a go in a week or so.  I know you did a lot of back and forth between them and drops before finally settling on the Albas.  I bought a second stem so that I can swap out the cockpit as a complete unit and just change out the cables and housing, transfer the bar-end shifters and bell.  Should make the transition easier and allow me to go between the drops and the Albatrosses without too much fuss.

Changed the cockpit over to Albatrosses this past week.  I'm enjoying the more upright position and the location of the bar-end shifters.  An added benefit is the shifters are now higher than the top tube, so no more banging of the bar-ends on the it.  The Linus is a new addition for my wife.

What is the light holder attached to your front rack and where did you get it?
Thanks,

To take a shot at answering my own question...is it an Edelux Light Mount like on the Riv site? If so, then my next question...is that a Cygolite mount on it? That's what I want to do; mount a Cygolite on my Mark's rack like that. What did you have to do to make that work?

It is a fork crown mount used with a Busch & Muller IXON IQ headlight, purchased from Peter White Cycles.

The mount is sold separately.  Scroll down a little from the top of the page and you will find the description for it:  http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/b&m.asp

Don't know about a Cygolite.  I do know that my Planet Bike Blaze Two fits the mount, in addition to the B&M IXON IQ.  So it's possible that other manufactures may use the same style of QR mount.

Looking at the Cygolite website, it looks like the style of the mount is opposite of that of the B&M.  With the B&M the rails on the light slide over the groves on the mount.  With the Cygolite it looks like the rails on the mount slide over the groves in the light.

David,

Rats! But thanks anyway. Might have to upgrade to the B&M.  J

It definitely looks like the B&M mount made mated with the cygolite mount!

The riding is definitely making a difference, more so that the PT.  Did 7.5 miles on Saturday morning and 8.5 on Sunday.  On the days that I ride, come the afternoon the back feels stronger and there is more mobility.  Same thing for the mornings the day after a ride.  Much more noticeable than on those day that I just do PT.  For anyone considering back surgery, do it only as a last resort.  I've had a good outcome so far, but the first three months were hell.

David, I had lumbar surgery back in 2005. Titanuim rods, screws and cages.Your Xray brought it all back. It took me a full year to get back to riding, so you're doing well to be riding after 6 months. I normally ride between 6-8,000 miles a year now, and my back isn't an issue at all when riding. I use drop bars and my seat is level with the bars.

I agree that back surgery should only be a last resort, and yes the first 3 months were hell, but the painkillers certainly took the edge off.

Thanks for the info. It's good to hear another success story.  I've heard that a year is realistic to be back to 100%.  I have not attempted getting back on my Cannondale road bike yet.  Sticking with the Sam and the Brompton for now as the riding positions are definitely more upright on those bikes.

Last Thursday I had my first totally pain free day since the sciatica thing started nearly 2 years ago.  Today's been pretty pain free too.  It's an off and on thing, depending on how much I do the day before, I think.  Been slowly increasing the mileage on the Sam.  Doing between 8 and 11 miles currently, with hills.  Really noticing a difference since adding the riding to the therapy routine.

Congratulations on your riding successes and I wish you a quick recovery.  I was admiring your Hillborne.  The black frameset looks fantastic with all the black accessories.  I was particularly curious about the saddle.  What is it?  How does it do reducing the road bumps when riding in the upright position?  The reason I ask is that I noticed that I felt a little more vibration in my back when riding in an upright position when my weight was distributed mostly on the seat than when it is distributed across seat and bars with the Albastache.  If I ever go back to my Albatross bars, I was thinking I might change seats from the B17.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

Good luck with your recovery.

John

Thank you John (and Patrick) for the well wishes.  The saddle is a Selle Anatomica Titanico X.  I'm pretty sure the 38mm Barlow Pass tires do more than the saddle for cushioning the ride.  I have not gotten back on my Cannondale CAAD9 with 25mm Gatorskins (also with an SA Titanico X) yet to make any kind of comparison.  Still working on forward flexibility as the lower back is still kind of tight.  I do think that the slot in the saddle does provide a little more give than a solid top would.  It seems more hammock like than my Brooks Team Pro.  The attached picture was before all this "fun", I mean pain, started back in 2013.  Hoping to one day get back club rides.  For now it is just nice to be able to run errands again with the bike and go for rides with my wife.  The saddle I had on at the time that picture was taken is a Brooks Conquest.  Similar in dimensions to a Pro but sprung (and heavy).  I find those sprung Brooks saddles be too short in the adjustability dept due to the short rails.

Yes, I love the black frame with the cream.  Looks really nice with all the silver parts.  I was on the fence regarding buying a Sam (had many months to plan this present to myself) until I saw the new black color.  That did it for me.  Fell off that fence like Humpty Dumpty.  It was fun planning all the parts to use on it.  Kept the UPS driver busy for weeks.

Thank you Cecily.  I appreciate that.  Rode a hilly 20 miles on Saturday and then rode the L.A. CicLaVia on Sunday.  I think the ride on Sat was a bit much though.  Lot of climbing.
