Calling all hearty Riv Riders.

For me at least this will be my last overnight for 2013 and I figure as next year my resolution is to do one a month,12-S240's or The S240 a month club...yeah it's easier on my finances than the "Bike a Month Club" but perhaps it will have it's own challenges like work schedule and honey do lists among other obligations, but I digress...the ride is planned for the Mount Gleason area weather permitting, the details are here which are the original post.

Mr. Shiller AKA the BigSchill over Flickr yonder and I have worked out a alternate ride if as I mentioned before above the weather doesn't cooperate. If the low temp at Mill Creek Summit is let's say in the low 30's (not all have the gear for that temperature) then we'll call it for the following alt-ride.

Start Ventura out the Ventura river trail to the Ojai Valley bike path extension through Ojai, 33N to Forest route 5N13 to Matilija Campground 27 miles with obvious climbing. I am told Rob Perks of Ocean Air Cycles did this ride earlier in the year. The directions are here.

I figure we can call the ride by Wednesday the 11th if the forecast looks dismal so there's time to make travel arraingments

Note: I'd like to get an early ride out time for plenty of leisure read that as photo op's, rest breaks, snacks and because it gets dark early make camp with some day light left. So how does an 8am start sound? I'll be driving up since it's only an hour or so drive for me.

I understand if taking off a Friday is difficult for some but then who really needs to work on a Friday anyways! And for those of you who loads of free time here's something to do, ride with good people get back to nature (frosty as it maybe) and in the end have a good meal and some brews at the Anacapa Brewing Co. in DT Ventura. Sounding better! All right! Let's do it.

~Hugh

Have a blast! As a hint, most any 40˚F bag with a vapor barrier and extra clothes (especially sweaters and hats) can work down into the 20's for most people, particularly with the combination of happy thoughts. So while you may not have a cold weather bag, you can layer up and do fine. Especially if you have a camp fire for evening (which promotes said happy thoughts). Enjoy!

With abandon,
Patrick

Deacon,

Thanks any time I get to camp I always have a blast.

I have a 25+ bag which I recently re-lofted and purchased a VBL so I'll be fine. There are others that don't have said gear so I was thinking of them. I don't know if we can do the fire thing in the Los Padres Forest as they want an official fire ring these days. So if there is one a fire there will be. Personally I like to do a stealth camp with no fire pits. Where I grew up we made our fires and knew how not to burn the place down.

Campfires are prohibited still in the Los Padres NF but stoves are allowed in designated camp sites.  We had a dry winter last year so fire restrictions are in place.

Our s24o with CocoBill got lost in the mix due to weather and a crowded schedule. Have fun in the Los Padres.

Hey Andy,

Thanks, well as it stands the Coconut got injured and is out for the count at least on the proposed date, Curtis is out and there has been little interest from anyone else. I figured it was a long shot this time of year, so it looks like it won't be happening this weekend. Evan is okay but sustained a bruised rib and something else? He said it was poor public planning at the root.

I've got a cold so was sort of inclined to shine it anyways but would have gone if others were all the way in. As it stands I'm planning on the 20th or 27th in the Los Padres with or without partners in crime.

What I like about your community is it's unflagging determination to get out and about, probably due to Portland's size...here in SoCal as you know it's hard to bring people together for small events. I just hope I have the energy to move North when I retire. I hear cold ain't easy when your bones get old:-)

If you wait for good weather in the PNW, you'll do a lotta waiting.  We freak out when the temp dips to 40 and go on "storm watch" if measurable rain (like 1/10") is forecast.

Christopher, as you well know the Coconuts warranty does not cover "weird" fissures. Please reference policy card.

We have ascertained that while travelling in a diplomatic capacity it appears the "weird" cycling community of Puddle Town have disturbed his gyroscopic balancing thus ill preparing the"Coco" for Southern California Public Works projects and traffic patterns. In the future when we lend our Coconut we ask that you not disturb his finely tuned stability systems.

For crying out loud he isn't the Hubble Space Telescope. Nothing a ball peen hammer and some nail polish can't fix.

Get well Coconutbill. And good luck. With those "technicians", you're gonna need it.

No need to cry over spilled coconut milk. Ride barefoot. It eliminates the need for "gyroscopic balancing," replacing it with "proprioceptive spacial awareness."

Cocochen no crying up there we don't want eyesicles forming and he's no six million dollar coconut either we can maintain his orbit for far less.

Hey Mac, if we eliminate the gyroscopic effect then we can make our adjustments relative to his individual mass distribution shoes or no shoes.

Cocodyne- repairing fractured Coconuts with twine and shellac since 1961 we don't need no stinking ball peen hammer & fancy wancy nail polish.

Ha! I wish it was today in which case we'd have two full days of camping .

Hey Evan, the update is that Mike S. told me yesterday that he thought he was coming down with a cold!! So the likelihood is that it'll just be the two of us. You cool with that? I just want to get out for a couple of days in nature.

Both Friday and Saturday in Ojai look to be a high of 66F with a low of 40F and dry so not too bad, I'm going to REI today to pick up a USGS map of the area and a larger stuff sack for the sleeping bag.You need anything?

wish I could go but came down with a minor cold yesterday. With nighttime temps in the mid to high 30's at the campsite I decided to stay home and recover.
It's  been raining down here all day... gunna be muddy a bit up there too.
