Yesterday I put my camera, a Nikon Df, into my new Swift Industries Ozette bag on the Atlantis. I was heading to a bonfire out in the country, so I threw a couple cans of beer in there too, and stuffed a few bandana's and spare gloves in to pad the camera and keep everything where it should be.

Or so I thought.

When I arrived at camp, I opened up my bag and discovered the Ozette had become a swimming pool of beer. Somehow one of the tall cans and split open and emptied. My camera was doused in a swill of PBR. Ironically, it was sitting on top of an unused dry bag I keep with me in the event of rain...

The body is currently buried in a bag of uncooked rice, soon to be replaced with a bag of silica gel packets I get today. We shall see if it will live to shoot another day.

My recommendation? Always put electronics in a waterproof container of some kind. On the plus side, it seems the Swift bag is extremely water tight...

Oh! Poor camera!    I think I'd love a Df, but, as I have a 7000 at work for use whenever, I haven't been able to justify buying one.....

This story reminds me of the time my be-wrapped-in-a-cloth eyeglasses became un-be-wrapped while riding in my handlebar bag. Rubbed and bumped against heck knows what else that was in the bag for heck knows how long during an afternoon of trail riding. $100 and a new set of lenses later!

Stow that gear with care, folks.

Off topic:  how well does the King Cage Iris work as a 3rd bottle holder on the bottom of your downtube?  Thinking about going that route as my bottle seems to move around too easily.

Love it, no issues. Well, a tall bottle doesn't fit in there with fenders, or with big fat 29r tires as shown, but a standard short bottle has lots of room. I've been considering replacing it with a cage for the short, fat fuel/water bottles instead.

Oh, man, bummer.  Let's hope for the best. If the camera was off, hopefully no circuits got fried.

I did take my big Nikon SLR on a charity ride recently, because the event coordinator had invited me to take photos from the road.  I was anxious about riding with the camera in my tiny Berthoud bag, but it worked out fine. I also made sure there was no liquid in the bag :-).

better drink them fast or they'll get hot

another option - added 3 more velcro straps and looped it to the rear rack - that's a 25-oz. thermos in there, but two twelve ounce cans will fit, also.

Oh that is very nice for sure! I need a new rack anyway. I was using a Bagman Expedition, but it snapped in half this week..

At least it was a PBR.

How well do modern lenses react to a swim in beer?

Agreed... as close to water as one can get for beer. I am thankful it wasn't an oatmeal stout or some fruity belgian beer..

It is the best possible cage for that purpose.

Nothing moves around in a King Iris. The weight of the bottle doesn't
tend to open the cage at all, either.

You can buy more expensive cages that will work in this application, but
none that are in any way better.

I will tell you in a day or two after it's truly dried out.. either way, I'll be sending the camera to Nikon for a cleaning. I don't want some internal moisture slowly corroding the components, only to kill it for good mid-shoot and post-warranty.

Our work cameras go through a lot, dirt in industrial settings and even wearing out card cover latches on the copystand from high use - we keep a local repair depot busy cleaning and installing parts for us.

Watertight bike bags were meant for holding cans of beer floating in slushy ice, not cameras. And only two beers?!?!

Haha point taken! I had thought of using my ortlieb panniers for that- bag of ice in one, picnic blanket in the other or something. And there were three tall cans for what it's worth!!

Also, turned the camera on two days ago. It was like a rave party- lights flashing and goin generally crazy. Another two days in a ziploc filled with silica and it works! Heading out on a overnighter now to try it out.

Congrats! Having a hopefully functional camera to test on an S24O is a GOOD problem to have! Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick
